Es folgten 1966 THE WEEDS, dann THE LOLLIPOP SHOPPE, ZIPPER, KING BEE, THE RATS, WESTERN FRONT, THE RANGE RATS und schließlich 1987 DEAD MOON. Verwandte Links. © by Ox-Fanzine - Ausgabe # und 31. Dead Moon - Dead Moon: The Book (2xLP + 300 Page Hardcover Book) Dead Moon were a DIY band, active for 19 years. Singer and guitarist Fred Cole was playing music since the early 1960’s – beginning his career as “Deep Soul Cole – the white Stevie Wonder”, then joining the psychedelic garage rock band the Lollipop Shoppe / The Weeds. In the 70’s and early 80’s Fred and Toody Cole played in various punk, country and hard rock bands. In the late 1980’s, they formed Dead Moon with Andrew Loomis. This band went on to become mythic and legendary. They lived by a DIY code built around superstitions and avoidance of conventional music industry pitfalls. Their story is completely unique amongst the pantheon on rock bands – a group who never sold out, never gave in and built a legacy of art and community piece by piece in a sustainable way almost unheard of. The book is a tribute to their unique aesthetic, unbelievable twisted path of a story, and roll as pioneers of the Portland music scene. The book tell’s the entire Dead Moon saga in the words of the band itself. Just the voices of Fred, Toody and Andrew. It includes a complete illustrated discography of everything Fred, Toody and Andrew have released, song lyrics, and TONS of band photos, flyers, and weird ephemeral stuff. Lots of it has never been seen by the greater public. The package also includes 2 LP’s of the “best of” Dead Moon – lovingly remastered from the original tapes. First edition is ultra deluxe, using great faux leather and cloth. Very sturdy construction. Come’s shrink wrapped. Another new year, another exciting issue of Maximum Rocknroll ! MRR #416 , our January 2018 issue, begins with a sad note as we say goodbye to DIY icon Fred Cole of DEAD MOON, the RATS, PIERCED ARROWS and more in an article by Erin Yanke. Fred Cole Tribute / Razorcake Podcast #501 w/ Tim Brooks. Tuesday, December 12, 2017 1:00 PM 2:00 PM 13:00 14:00 Google CalendarICS. On Thursday November 9th 2017, we lost one of the shining lights of rock’n’roll. Mr Fred Cole. Fred started out in bands in the early ‘60s, finishing up with Pierced Arrows in the 2010s. Him and his wife are best known for the legendary band Dead Moon. A renegade who exemplified everything about the DIY spirit. Fred built his house from scratch, made his own guitars and pressed his own goddamn records. I haven’t been this affected by the death of someone outside my own family since John Peel died. I drove home after finding out about it with the missus, and we both cried all the way home. If you aren’t familiar: welcome to your new favorite band. New Orleans, LA: Unknown Passage: The Dead Moon Story (Documentary Screening) Tuesday, November 21, 2017 6:00 PM 8:00 PM 18:00 20:00 Google CalendarICS.
»It’s okay / We all seen better days / It’s okay / You don’t have to run and hide away / It’s okay / We love you anyway«, singen Fred und Toody Cole von Dead Moon mit rauen Stimmen in ihrem Song »It’s Okay«.

  • Place and Punk: the Heritage Significance of Grunge in the Pacific North West
Place and Punk: The heritage significance of Grunge in the Pacific North West William Kenneth Smith MA By Research University of York Archaeology May 2017 Abstract Academic institutions and the heritage industry are now actively seeking to understand the wider social, cultural and economic processes which surround the production and consumption of popular music histories. Music is a local creation; it is created through a flux of internal and external influences, and is bound up in questions of economy, networks, art, identity and technology. In the early 1990s the Pacific North West of the United States of America gave birth to what became known as the musical genre of ‘grunge’. It developed into a distinctive genre, presenting a style and sound which propagated within the confines of a specific time and place. As construction sites continue to emerge throughout the Pacific North West, the impact of music still provides an essential contribution to the regions character and culture. Despite this, countercultural pasts are vulnerable; not only to the passage of time but also the processes of development, gentrification and marginalization. This research explores the heritage significance of the Pacific North West punk scene. It presents a historiography of punk and an appraisal of the scholarly discourse surrounding place. This study utilizes artifacts, sites and oral histories to explore countercultural material and memories as well as the form and function of punk. Themes such as geography and environment are enfranchised into the discussion as ethnography and multidisciplinary approaches are applied to make a unique contribution to what is an essential and timely discussion regarding people, culture, heritage and place.
