I intend to ensure that this publication will educate you about the economy, highlight the accomplishments of dedicated officials, keep you informed about new developments like promotions, appointments, including other matters that affect your health as well as managing finances. You will also be reading about the redeployment of MEC MacCollen Jack who has just joined Treasury. We will be sharing with you his achievements and dedication towards everything that comes his way. Another interesting topic we covered in this issue is provincial budget vote, the strategic planning session held recently and many more. I feel glad to acknowledge the support and encouragement of all those who contributed directly or indirectly to bring the Newsletter out. And when you put all these technologies together, well, let just say the innovations are unexpected and surprising. This is the beginning of the next great industrial revolution, the 4th industrial revolution.

As I thought about that song, we need to mobilise the Northern Cape community behind the vision of a Modern, Growing and Successful Northern Cape Province. Over the past 25 years of democracy, concerted efforts were made to address the triple challenges of poverty, unemployment and inequality in the Province. Today, we look back full of pride because of what the ANC, its allies and the people of this country have achieved. Although much has been achieved, we could have moved faster and the quality of services could have been much better. Many of our people are still longing for their own home, a decent work opportunity, good health services, quality public education system, safer communities and many more. 2 | P a g e The Freedom Charter remains our inspiration and our strategic guide to realising a better life and a South Africa that truly belongs to all who live in it.

The Freedom Charter was our battle cry during the struggle, and indeed our answer to every evil thing that defined the apartheid system. Page | 2 When it said "South Africa Belongs to All of us, black and white", the Freedom Charter defied the very definition of apartheid which turned citizens into foreigners in their own country through the Bantustan system, and reinforced racial divisions, seeing differences in our racial appearance as the reason to separate us instead of moulding us into the rainbow nation we have been constructing since 1994. Honourable Speaker, our country has been down-graded by three rating agencies with a continuous negative outlook recently. The credit rating downgrade means higher debt service costs, which will have in turn to be financed through increased taxes or reduced public spending. The recent decline of 0.7 percent in the gross domestic product for first quarter of 2017 compounded with the contraction of 0.3 percent in the fourth quarter of 2016, resulted in the announcement of a technical recession.

On the 15th of August 2020, President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the nation on the developments of South-African risk adjusted strategy in managing the spread of COVID -19. The country has moved to lockdown alert level 2 effective from Tuesday, 18th of August 2020 and this has taken citizens out of a hard lockdown by lifting some restrictions, however citizens are still expected to comply with the regulations under alert level 2 lockdown. Whilst the further easing of lockdown restrictions will enable more sectors of the economy to operate and this will allow more movement of people including employees returning to work and inter- provincial travelling. They are given as a pledge of love and worn as a symbol of commitment (Peter Singer, Australian Moral Philosopher)”. Therefore, it is true that a highly compelling analogy can be made between the gesture of diamond gifting and the ANC government’s commitment to reversing the immensely pernicious legacy of apartheid. Although much more needs to be done to eradicate the triple challenges of unemployment, inequality and poverty, many millions of South Africans continue to have access to quality health care and education while electricity and drinkable water are becoming increasingly available and millions more of South Africans have decent housing to call home. This is indeed a good story to tell; it is a story of mutual love and it is a story of conjoint dedication between a government and citizens to re- build a sparkling nation that was torn apart by years of racial exclusivity.
