IPv4 WAN () Point-to-Point Tunneling (PPTP) Configuration on RV220W Wireless

Objectives

There are mainly two kinds of VPN: Point to Point Tunneling Protocol () and Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP). The Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) is a method for implementing virtual private networks. PPTP uses a control channel over TCP tunnel which operates to encapsulate PPP packets. PPTP works on a client server model and its clients are included by default in Microsoft Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. Newer VPN technologies like L2TP and IPsec may replace PPTP someday, but PPTP remains a popular network protocol especially on Windows computers. Both the protocols can link a remote computer to a network, but L2TP offers better security and reliability, which means if some sensitive information is transmitted, it should not be done via PPTP. Some devices may not support L2TP, in which case PPTP can be implemented instead.

This document explains how to configure the IPv4 WAN (Internet) to use with Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) on the RV220W Wireless Firewall.

Applicable Devices

• RV220W

Software Version

• v1.0.4.17

IPv4 WAN (Internet) PPTP Configuration

Step 1. Log in to the web configuration utility and choose Networking > WAN (Internet) > IPv4 WAN (Internet). The IPv4 WAN (Internet) page opens:

Step 2. Choose PPTP from the Internet Connection Type drop-down list.

Step 3. Enter the username provided by the ISP in the User Name field.

Step 4. Enter the password provided by the ISP in the Password field.

Step 5. To enable MPPE check the MPPE Encryption check box. This works only if your ISP supports Microsoft Point-to-Point Encryption (MPPE).

Step 6. Click the desired radio button for the type of connection to use in the Connection Type field:

• Keep Connected — This keeps the device connected to the network for all the time.

• Idle Time — Allows you to enter a time (in minutes) manually after which the device will go idle.

Step 7. Enter the IP address associated with the device in the My IP Address field.

Step 8. Enter the server IP address associated with the device in the Server IP Address field.

Step 9. Click the radio button corresponding to the desired MTU Type. The Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) is the size (in bytes) of the largest data unit that can pass through the protocol layer.

• Default — Uses the default value of 1500 Bytes. This size is recommended.

• Custom — Allows you to enter a desired MTU size (bytes) value.

Step 10. Choose the source for the MAC address from the MAC Address Source drop-down list:

• Use Default Address — Allows you to use the default MAC address.

• Use This Computer's Address — Allows you to use the MAC address your computer currently has.

• Use this MAC — Allows you to enter a specific MAC address.

Step 11. Click Save to apply all settings.
