FINE SERIES ENTRYBy SCOTT W SCHUMACKOne of the best things about this long running series is the way it wanders between realism, pure fantasy, and science fiction-tinged stories. The art remains beautiful and the book leaves you waiting for the next chapter. In their island fortress, Kriss and Shaigan still reign over their band of pirates and raiders. But Shaigan is beginning to have doubts, and when a prisoner who knew him calls him Thorgal, the child of the stars begs the gods of Asgard to give him back his name and his destiny. In return, the gods require that Thorgal travel to the kingdom of giants and steal from their ruler... and then Thorgal will be Thorgal again. He’s a child of the stars, beloved of the gods and touched by destiny, but also a reluctant hero, a simple man with simple dreams. Thorgal: an extraordinary Viking saga with strong elements of science fiction, by one of the master scriptwriters of Franco-Belgian comics. Already 13 volumes available from Cinebook! About the AuthorJean Van Hamme was born in 1939 in Belgium.

  • Lucky Luke Shaped by Myth and History [1] by Annick Pellegrin
TRANSFORMATIONS Journal of Media & Culture http://www.transformationsjournal.org/journal/24/05.shtml ISSN 1444-3775 Issue No. 24 2014 — The Other Western “I Knew Killing a Man Would Kill You”: Lucky Luke Shaped by Myth and History [1] By Annick Pellegrin The two most successful creations of American movies are the gangster and the Westerner: men with guns. Guns as physical objects, and the postures associated with their use, form the visual and emotional center of both types of films. - Robert Warshow, The Immediate Experience, 135 Born in 1946 in the comic magazine Spirou, and pre-published in its pages until 1968 (Mellot 21), the comic series Lucky Luke recounts the adventures of the phlegmatic and lanky Lucky Luke as he travels across the Wild West together with his talking horse, Jolly Jumper. Although he is a cowboy, Lucky Luke is rarely depicted herding cows and is more often seen serving his country as a court officer, as a “special government employee,” as a sheriff or as a mayor (du Chatenet 697-99). In addition to entirely fictional characters, Lucky Luke is known for featuring historical characters, such as Calamity Jane and Jesse James, as well as numerous caricatures of celebrities (Delporte 19-28). Lucky Luke’s physique itself was inspired by that of five actors from the US: Tom Mix, William Hart, Roy Rogers, Gene Autry and Gary Cooper (du Chatenet 697). While the creator of Lucky Luke – the Belgian Morris – collaborated with numerous scriptwriters, Lucky Luke was his only comic series (Filippini, “Les « seconds Rôles » dans Lucky Luke” 25) and he was the sole artist of the series until he passed away.

Producing Popularity: The Success in France of the Comics Series "Astérix le Gaulois" Eliza Bourque Dandridge Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirement for the Degree of Master of Arts in History (European Area Studies) Dr. Fabrice G. Teulon, Chair Dr. Sue W. Farquhar Dr. E. Thomas Ewing April 30, 2008 Blacksburg, Virginia Keywords: Astérix, comics, bande dessinée, production of culture, branding, popularity, appeal Copyright 2008 Eliza Bourque Dandridge. All rights reserved. Producing Popularity: The Success in France of the Comics Series "Astérix le Gaulois" Eliza Bourque Dandridge ABSTRACT: This study examines the rise in popularity of the French comics series "Astérix le Gaulois" through a production-of-culture lens in an effort to uncover how industry evolution and organization, protectionist legislation, marketing, advertising, branding, and consecration by the media worked interdependently to catapult Astérix, the series' protagonist, into stardom by the middle of the 1960s. In so doing, this study forcefully argues that elements external to the text itself greatly facilitated, and in some ways determined, the series' quick and dramatic rise in popularity in France by 1966. The predominance of American and Belgian comics into the 1950s and the moral turn towards all things "100 % français" enabled the success of Pilote, the French- language, French-themed magazine launched in 1959 and in which "Astérix" first appeared. By the early 1960s, Pilote's faithful readership helped make the publication of "Astérix" in album format a resounding success. Simultaneous radio exposure and extensive product merchandising further promoted "Astérix" to a new, vast, and diverse comics market comprised of children and adults alike.
