The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord

Here, Matthew describes Jesus’ baptism, the event which marks the beginning of his public ministry, and which is recorded in all four Gospels. The passage is distinctly Trinitarian, as it records a manifestation of the Father, Son and Spirit. The symbiotic nature of the Trinity is

also highlighted: The Father confirms the Son as the One sent by him and the Son undertakes

willingly the work of the Father with the help of the Spirit

Second Sunday of Ordinary Time

John indentifies Jesus as ‘the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world’,

resonating with the sacrificial Passover lamb of Exodus. This was the person foretold in Isaiah as the Suffering Servant who would be led like a lamb to the slaughter and is now revealed to Israel and the world as the Chosen One – the Son of God. John the Baptist therefore not only knew Jesus for his mission but also for who he really was.

th 27 Sunday in Ordinary Time

An old Cherokee Indian is telling his grandson about a fight going on inside himself. He said it was between two wolves. One is evil: envy, sorrow, arrogance, self pity, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride. The other is good: serenity, benevolence, kindness, hope, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, faith. The grandson thought about it for a moment and then asked his grandfather, ‘Which wolf wins?’ the old Cherokee gave a clear response, ‘The one I feed.’ The Gospel at Mass this weekend is equally clear ‘Do what is good for your Soul.’

Jesus reminds us in the Gospel today that we need a Spirit of persistence’s when we pray; this is a challenge because most things in the world are instant. It was the woman’s

persistence that moved the judge to mercy. It would be our persistence’s in our prayer that will move God to be Merciful.

Mission Sunday

The mission month of October, especially Mission Sunday, offers the entire People of God the occasion for renewing their commitment to proclaim the Gospel. The Eucharist is the source and summit of the mission of the Church. There we encounter the Love of God that transforms our existence, enabling us to live in communion with Jesus and offer a credible witness and a reason for our hope. We reflect on the Father’s loving plan for all people and seek to love them as he does. The love that we celebrate is not something we can keep to ourselves: it demands to be shared with all. What the world needs is God’s love; it needs to encounter Christ and to believe in Him. (Pope Benedict XVI)

It was St Francis of Assisi who said “Preach the Gospel and if necessary use Words”. He reminds us that our lives should reflect what we believe. During this Month of November we remember all our deceased relatives and friends. Our prayer is that they will enjoy happiness and peace with God in Heaven. We pray with the hope that we will all be reunited in Gods eternal Kingdom. In the meantime, we preach the gospel by the way we live upon this Earth.

Wisdom understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety and fear of the Lord. The central gift of the Holy Spirit, fortitude, is one we need so much at times. The turmoil and confusion in the world can be reflected in our own personal lives through the various crosses we have to carry. Jesus never promised to remove his followers from the troubles of life, but he did promise to give us strength. St Anthony of Padua said: ‘Just as a fish is not hurt by the constant pounding of the waves of the sea, neither is strong faith destroyed by life’s adversities.’ The true follower of Christ may lose his or her life but will never lose his or her soul.

First Sunday of Advent

The Gospel forces us to ponder on what we do know and what we don’t know. It’s easier to list what we don’t know. We don’t know the day or the hour when the Son of Man will come and no amount of study is going to tell us. We simply do not know. But we do know what we are supposed to do in the meantime. We are to be ready, awake, not laying half asleep waiting for the alarm to go off – be up, anticipate the alarm. The long finger, on which we put so much; tomorrow, when we will do so much, are two of the most dangerous inventions ever. The antidote? The little letters – now.

Second Sunday of Advent

John the Baptist lives a life of penance in the wilderness; this is his living commitment to God. The wilderness, from which he comes and preaches, is part of the great prophetic tradition which looks to the wilderness for God’s final revelation. John is the one whom Isaiah foretold, and his call is to prepare a way for the Lord. He calls for repentance, in Greek literally meaning ‘return’. His call is for the conversion to God’s ways. This conversion is closely allied to a confession of sins, a ‘mentanoia’ a

complete change of heart and life.

Second Sunday after Christmas

Authors differ as to whether the Prologue is an overture to the Gospel, a prefatory summary of it, a philosophical rationale for the main thesis of the Gospel or free-standing hymn which later integrated into the Gospel. It addresses key theological issues such as the divinity of Christ, the origin of the Cosmos and the creation of life, and it intimates the triune nature of God. The core message is about the incarnation. The key concepts of light and life have rich religious overtones whether they are read from a Greek, Gnostic or Jewish perspective. This passage needs to be read and reread. A Special Word of Thanks for your generosity towards the Christmas Gift Collection.

Wishing you and all your families a Happy and Peaceful New Year.

The Feast of the Bapti sm of the Lord

Third Sunday of Ordinary Time

The Gospel today is one of the most beautiful and lyrical passages in the New

Testament. It’s the story of Jesus’ call of the first disciples. There’s something peaceful about the story. What Matthew’s is doing is sharing at the beginning of Jesus’ ministry what he is essentially about. Jesus comes as a representative of God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit – a family of Love.

Fifth Sunday of Ordinary Time

This is what we are about: We plant seeds that one day will grow. We water seeds already planted, knowing

that they hold future promise... We cannot do everything, and there is a sense of liberation in realizing that. This enables us to do something and to do it very well... We may never see the end results, but that is the difference between the master builder and the worker. We are workers, not master builders, ministers, not Messiahs. We are prophets of a future not our own. (Oscar Romero)

1st Sunday of Lent

One way of looking at this Gospel is to say that Jesus went into the desert to face his

demons. We all have demons we need to face – compulsions, fears, prejudices, anger

and urges that lurk within. It is in facing our demons that we find a way to live a fuller life.

Holiness’ is something we are all called to but frequently escapes us! The story in

today’s Gospel takes place on a Holy Mountain and the apostle Peter offers shelter to

Moses, Elijah and Jesus. Holiness is the task of making a place for Christ under my roof, in my heart. Let this Eucharist expand our hearts and horizons to welcome the stranger and be concerned to give shelter to the vulnerable.

Let your God look upon you These are the new prayers that are in the new Roman Missal That is all to be fully implemented by the First Sunday of Advent. God knows, God understands
