Devon World Heritage Coast 9 November 2016 Review Officer (East Devon) Local Government Boundary Commission for England 14th Floor Millbank Tower Millbank London SWIP 4QP Dear Sir/Madam ELECTORAL REVIEW OF EAST DEVON: WARDING ARRANGEMENTS I am writing on behalf of Beer Parish Council to provide a formal consultation response regarding the proposed electoral review of East Devon District Council. The Parish Council notes the Commission’s aim to deliver electoral equality for voters across the district. Beer is currently part of Beer & Branscombe ward and the Parish Council understands that there is currently a disparity in ward sizes within East Devon. The Parish Council has highlighted the following priorities for Beer & Branscombe ward: i) Maintain the rural nature of the ward ii) Maintain a single Councillor ward if possible (maximum of 2 Councillors) iii) In the event that Beer & Branscombe ward should need to be enlarged - consider the inclusion of properties to the west of Beer brook (Seaton Hole) and/or extend the existing ward further to the west to include areas of Weston and Salcombe Regis (not already included) Thank you for the opportunity to participate in this consultation exercise. Dorset & the Jurassic Coast Dorset, on the south coast of Britain is well worth a visit if you’re interested in beautiful landscapes and dramatic coastlines. Over half the county is designated ‘an area of outstanding beauty’ and three quarters of the coastline is classed as a world heritage site. There are no motorways in Dorset, so you will have time to take in the scenery as you meander through rolling hills and picture perfect villages. The coastline has many things to offer. From Chesil Beach, the 18 mile long stretch of pebbles that has protection for its wildlife, to the limestone arches of Durdle Dor, part of the Lulworth Estate. How about letting the kids search for fossils in the limestone cliffs near Lyme Regis or letting them run amok at Maiden Castle, an Iron Age hill fort near Dorchester or Corfe Castle on the Isle of Purbeck that was built by William the Conqueror. If you feel like a little nightlife, you could visit Bournemouth or Poole in the east of the County. Partial dissolution of the Chalk in Devon LARGE-SCALE PARTIAL DISSOLUTION OF THE CHALK OF THE DEVON COAST AND ITS ENGINEERING SIGNIFICANCE R.W.GALLOIS Gallois, R.W. 2005. Large-scale partial dissolution of the Chalk of the Devon coast and its engineering significance. Geoscience in south-west England, 11, 123-131. Numerous site investigations have described ‘reconstituted’, ‘putty’, ‘soft’ and ‘rubbly’ chalks which have generally been grouped together for geotechnical description purposes as ‘structureless’, to distinguish them from ‘structured’ (bedded and jointed) in situ chalks. Structureless chalks have mostly been assumed to be redeposited materials or materials that have been intensely mechanically reworked in place. They include sludge (Head), partially water-sorted (Coombe), fluvial (Dry Valley and Nailborne) and cryoturbation (Head) deposits. Recent surveys of the east Devon coast have shown that an extensive, thick chalk deposit, which in small exposures or in cored boreholes could be mistaken for redeposited material, has formed in situ by the partial dissolution of a particular type of chalk. The best exposures, in the cliffs at and adjacent to Beer, Devon [SY 230 890], show a 15 m- to 30 m-thick layer of partially decalcified, nodular chalk that is underlain and overlain by intact clay-rich chalks. The boundaries of the decalcified unit are stratigraphically controlled and sharply defined. It contains angular to rounded, granule to boulder sized litho-relics in a degraded, chalk-fines matrix. Blocks of intact, largely unweathered chalk up to tens of metres thick occur as detached masses ‘floating’ in the partially decalcified unit, and even larger masses have settled down into it.

I made it to issue No 2 despite the errors in my first attempt. You will be delighted to hear that days/dates have been triple checked and, hopefully, no- one should turn up for a walk on the wrong day! The annual summary of OVA walks, published in full on the website, highlights that members are walking more regularly and further. The total number of walks which took place from 1 July 2014 to 30 June 2015 rose to 63 (from 56 in 2013/14) with 412 miles covered. The number of walkers increased from 498 to 643 in the same period. According to the statistics OVA members walked a staggering total of 4,154 miles during the year! So put your feet up and have a cup of tea while you enjoy the latest issue of the newsletter and contemplate the programme of Walks and Talks for the next few months.
