14 15 FEATURE The Fossil Academy Waking up before the sun rises with the storm still battering the windows, time to get the kit ready, hit the beach and see what mother nature has clawed from the cliffs.

One of the main draws to the Jurassic coast is undoubtedly the fossil rich cliffs surrounding and Lyme Regis. World famous World Heritage Site the sign says, as you drive down to the beach, eager to find your own piece of ancient history.

My name is Dan Brownley, I am a Warden at the Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre, fossil collector, preparator and creator of the YouTube Channel, ‘The Fossil Academy’. Before I moved to the area I used to travel a 6-7 hour round trip for a days collecting on the Jurassic Coast, I can now (smugly) say, I can do the trip to the beach in around 8 minutes! The life of a professional collector is strange, one governed by the eb and flow of the tides. Sitting in the workshop for hours upon hours, painstakingly removing rock piece by piece, waiting for the weather to get ferocious and reshape the beach. When this happens it turns the tables in favour of the collector to discover and preserve these beloved natural treasures, for every fossil found many are lost to the sea, churned around in the surf, eroded, to become in the distant future part of an inquisitive childs sandcastle. This is why I have chosen to pursue this path,

I see myself and fellow fossilers as guardians, painstaikingly preserving our heritage for others to marvel over. It is a labour of love, some pieces can be many hundreds of hours work, using air scribes (an air engraver) and expensive air abrasive machines (like a shot blaster, but in miniature form). It can take years to become proficient at using the tools. I would recommend anyone interested in finding their own fossils to invest in some paleo equipment and have a go at cleaning their own material, when you get proficient the rewards can be stunning.

Collecting fossils also requires its fair share of luck, to be in the right place at the right time (queue the scramble to be first on the beach) there is a collector who people called the ‘milk man’, I thought it was because he was there before everyone else, turns out, he actually was a milk man.

16 Tips for collecting fossils around Lyme Regis and Charmouth

Always check the tides before venturing out on a fossil hunt. In the last school half term week there were 6 rescues along the stretch from Lyme Regis and Charmouth. The Safest time to collect is two hours before low water and one hour after. A strong onshore wind can alter this dramatically so always keep an eye on the state of the sea.

The best tools for collecting are your eyes! Many great finds can be had without ever having to unclip your hammer from your belt.

If you see a fossil you want to find yourself, do some research, find some examples, look at the type of rock it is in, this will give you a better idea of what to look for while out hunting on the beach. Researching where they are in situ in the cliffs will narrow your search area on the beach, increasing your chances of finding the right type of rock. (Please remember it is illegal to dig into the cliffs! ex situ material that is no longer part of the cliffs, which has been deposited on the beach is fair game though.)

The easiest fossils to find along Charmouth and Lyme Regis are Belemnites and pyrite ammonites, I have made a short YouTube Video showing some good areas for finding these and tips on what to look out for.

Stay away from the clay slips at the base of the cliffs! They look stable but my collection of ‘Wellies sticking out of clay’ images tell a different story! Having to do the walk of shame along 600 yards of shingle with no boots won’t be a fun experience!

When hammering rocks if you expose part of a decent fossil, it’s always Youtube: The Fossil Academy worth bagging it as it is and either getting someone with the tools and Words and Images: Dan Brownley know how to prepare it for you, or have a go yourself at home in a more controlled manner. Knowing when to stop whacking is a good skill to learn. The nature of collecting rocks you are bound to break a few but if you collect all the bits they usually go back together well and nice specimens can be had. The temptation to try and ‘pop’ the rock off ammonites on the beach has lead to the demise of many a beautiful fossil.

Maurice and Steve give the bolts a final tightening The wheel keeps turning

In the freezing month of January, a team of dedicated volunteers took upon them the epic task of replacing the wooden components of the Town Mill waterwheel. Here’s their story...

The waterwheel was originally refurbished in 2001 when it was salvaged from a threshing barn and installed in the Mill. All wooden waterwheels have a minimum life of about 10 years. The town mill waterwheel is an iron/wooden wheel and was 18 years old. It is not surprising that it is was due for refurbishment.

A group of ten volunteers donated their time to the cause, with the funding for the wooden components coming from a sponsorship campaign, with buckets priced at £100 each, and the spars at £200 each.

The first jobs were to block the launder box entrance and waterwheel exit so work can be continued in the dry. A concrete block wall was constructed to block both entries. This allowed dry access to the wheel.

The wheel was stripped of the old wood from the buckets by a The volunteer team at the reopening of the wheel volunteer team of Steve Frear, John Williams, Maurice Liddiard, Gary Willis, Rob McLaughlin, Ian Bark, Andy Truscott and Pete Hackett.

40 we want you to notice what you are drinking

An old spar (left) and new spar (right)

The spars were left in place as the plan was to replace these one pair at a time.

New spars, risers, sole boards, bucket boards, and launder were hand made to fit, each perfectly to suit the ones removed. The spars made from Green Oak and the buckets from Douglas Fir and Larch (a resinous wood that helps prevent soaking from water).

After completion, the wheel was tested, and after a little bit of tinkering, it now up and running again, in a much more efficient manner, turning the stones to mill grains into flour.

The refurbishment generated plenty of outside interest, notably from BBC Spotlight. A huge amount of thanks is owed to the volunteers for making this happen, and for everyone who sponsored a bucket or spar.

Visit the mill and take a tour to see the wheel in action and to find out more about how the team undertook this wonderful refurbishment. 57 -58 Broad St, Lyme Regis DT7 3QF www.townmill.org 01297 445086 www.cellar59.co.uk Mill Lane, Lyme Regis, Dorset DT7 3PU @cellar59lyme @cellar59

Utilising amenity land at the top of Timber Hill, heading towards Cobb Gate Charmouth, Jurassic Footgolf aim to bring a new sport to visitors and locals of Lyme Regis.

The ambition is that of local entrepreneur Gary Davies, who Mollie’s envisaged a great way of using the Strawberry Fields located near Why not try a the park and ride, which would bring a bit of fun to individuals and groups of any age.

So what is footgolf? The game is played similarly to golf, with the exception that players use a football instead of a golf ball, and the ball is kicked rather than struck with a club, working toward a 21- Jolly inch “cup” in place of the usual golf hole. The player who finishes the course with the fewest shots wins.
