  • The Role of Science in the History of Portuguese Anti-Jesuitism
journal of jesuit studies 2 (2015) 77-99 brill.com/jjs The Role of Science in the History of Portuguese Anti-Jesuitism Henrique Leitão ciuhct, Faculdade de Ciências, Universidade de Lisboa [email protected] Francisco Malta Romeiras ciuhct, Faculdade de Ciências, Universidade de Lisboa [email protected] Abstract When dealing with the expulsion of the Jesuits from Portugal and with the building of anti-Jesuitism in the eighteenth century, historians usually focus on their alleged involve- ment in the attempt to murder king Dom José I and on the complex economical ques- tions related with the foundation of the state trade company in Brazil. However, the Pombaline accusation of obscurantism and scientific illiteracy also played a central role in the history of anti-Jesuitism in Portugal, mainly due to its wide acceptance and lon- gevity. This argument was not only directly relevant for the expulsion of the Jesuits in the eighteenth century but it was also a keystone of the anti-Jesuit propaganda that eventu- ally led to the expulsion of the Society of Jesus from Portugal in the twentieth century. Keywords anti-Jesuitism – expulsion of the Jesuits – Portuguese Jesuits – Marquis of Pombal – obscurantism – anticlericalism – republican revolution – history of science – science education – scientific popularization 1 The Arguments of an Anti-Jesuit Campaign Although anti-Jesuitism was born with the very foundation of the Society of Jesus and had a long and convoluted history, it is perhaps safe to say that it © Leitão and Romeiras, 2015 | DOI 10.1163/22141332-00201004 This is an open access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution- Noncommercial 4.0 Unported (CC-BY-NC 4.0) License.

Fr Cantalamessa gives first Advent reflection to Pope and Roman Curia The Preacher of the Papal Household, Fr Raniero Cantalamessa, gives his first Advent reflection at the Redemptoris Mater Chapel in the Apostolic Palace. Below is the full text of his sermon. P. Raniero Cantalamessa ofmcap BLESSED IS SHE WHO BELIEVED!” Mary in the Annunciation First Advent Sermon 2019 Every year the liturgy leads us to Christmas with three guides: Isaiah, John the Baptist and Mary, the prophet, the precursor, the mother. The first announced the Messiah from afar, the second showed him present in the world, the third bore him in her womb. This Advent I have thought to entrust ourselves entirely to the Mother of Jesus. No one, better than she can prepare us to celebrate the birth of our Redeemer. She didn’t celebrate Advent, she lived it in her flesh. Like every mother bearing a child she knows what it means be waiting for somebody and can help us in approaching Christmas with an expectant faith. We shall contemplate the Mother of God in the three moments in which Scripture presents her at the center of the events: the Annunciation, the Visitation and Christmas. 1. “Behold, / am the handmaid of the Lord” We start with the Annunciation. When Mary went to visit Elizabeth she welcomed Mary with great joy and praised her for her faith saying, “Blessed is she who believed there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken her from the Lord” (Lk 1:45). The wonderful thing that took place in Nazareth after the angel’s greeting was that Mary “believed,” and thus she became the “mother of the Lord.” There is no doubt that the word “believed” refers to Mary’s answer to the angel: “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word (Lk 1:38).

  • THE EXEGETICAL ROOTS of TRINITARIAN THEOLOGY MICHAEL SLUSSER Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, Pa
Theological Studies 49 (1988) THE EXEGETICAL ROOTS OF TRINITARIAN THEOLOGY MICHAEL SLUSSER Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, Pa. N RECENT YEARS systematic theologians have been showing increased I interest in studying the doctrine of the Trinity. An integral part of that study should be an exposition of the origins of the doctrine. The question of origins can be posed in an analytical fashion, as Maurice Wiles has done: .. .we seem forced to choose between three possibilities: either (1) we do after all know about the Trinity through a revelation in the form of propositions concerning the inner mysteries of the Godhead; or (2) there is an inherent threefoldness about every act of God's revelation, which requires us to think in trinitarian terms of the nature of God, even though we cannot speak of the different persons of the Trinity being responsible for specific facets of God's revelation; or (3) our Trinity of revelation is an arbitrary analysis of the activity of God, which though of value in Christian thought and devotion is not of essential significance.1 I think that this analytical approach is in important respects secondary to the genetic one. The first Christians spoke about God in the terms which we now try to analyze; surely the reasons why they used those terms are most relevant to a sound analysis. The main words whose usage needs to be fathomed are the Greek words prosöpon, hypostasis, ousia, andphysis.2 Prosöpon is the earliest of these terms to have attained an accepted conventional usage in early Christian speech about God, and therefore the chief determinant of the shape which the complex of terms was to take.

Alone with Christ – amid thousands of World Youth Day pilgrims Despite being surrounded by thousands of young Catholics gathered for World Youth Day 2019, Edmonton pilgrim Ann-Maria Au has been amazed by the ability to feel alone with Christ. “To see thousands of Catholics adore Christ, it was beautiful,” said Au, describing an evening of adoration in Panama City this week. “Every day all the crowds have been loud. I’m always with people. So it was amazing to be able to feel alone with Christ.” Ann-Maria Au and Tatyana Beltran (second and third from left ) were among the Edmontonians on the World Youth Day pilgrimage who were awaiting Pope Francis's arrival in Panama City.Ann-Maria Au Almost 1,400 Canadians are in Panama for World Youth Day this year, including a group of 25 pilgrims from the Edmonton Archdiocese. The event culminates with a Mass on Jan. 27 celebrated by Pope Francis, who arrived in Panama four days earlier. “I don’t know how to describe it,” said NorQuest College student Natalia Sobólska, 23, who is on her first World Youth Day pilgrimage. “It’s beautiful. We’re going to see the pope today and I’m very, very excited to see him.” “We actually saw Pope Francis drive by us a few times already,” added Au. Rev. Roger Niedzielski “I do feel quite tired and sore, but it’s all worth it to celebrate with youth and the pope,” added Father Roger Niedzielski, an associate pastor at St. Joseph’s Basilica and one of two priests in the Edmonton delegation.

  • CELEBRATING FORTY YEARS of FILMS WORTH TALKING ABOUT I Love the August Festivals, Though Not As Much As I Love Cinema
3 AUG 18 6 SEP 18 1 | 3 AUG 18 - 6 SEP 18 88 LOTHIAN ROAD | FILMHOUSECinema.COM CELEBRATING FORTY YEARS OF FILMS WORTH TALKING ABOUT I love the August festivals, though not as much as I love cinema. You? I usually take the opportunity when writing this column every August to grumble about how distracted potential cinema-goers appear to be by the world’s largest arts festival that takes place in our glorious (a word which currently also describes the weather!) city every year, but this year I’m seeing it as nothing more than a challenge. A challenge, dear reader, which I feel we have risen to in impressive style with a stunning array of great cinema, much of which is, as it happens, of a ‘one-off’ nature and will likely not come around again any time soon… That sounds like I’m trying to dragoon you into coming to the cinema in August (instead of going to the Tattoo, perhaps?), and conceivably I am, but try not to see it that way… Rather, I simply wouldn’t want you to miss out on any of the must-see cinema experiences contained within these pages. In any case, cinema is surely the best of all the art forms wouldn’t you say, as well as being one of the cheaper days/nights out? Beyond the form itself, with cinema, you rarely have to worry about not liking a film and it being apparent to the people who made it, because they’re generally not there in the room.
