Visit Herefordshire Churches

Churches tell a story, many stories - of families, of political intrigue and social change, of architecture, and changes in belief. Herefordshire Churches Tourism Group is a network of some of the best churches and chapels in the county that have dominated the landscape and life of communities for more than a thousand years.

What will you find when you enter the door? A source of fascination, awe, or a deep sense of peace? Here people have come and still come, generation on generation, seeking the place of their ancestors or solace for the present. Our churches still play a significant part in the life of our communities. Some act as community centres with modern facilities, others have developed their churchyards to attract wild life, all serve as living monuments to our heritage and history. Visiting our churches can enhance your appreciation and enjoyment of Herefordshire. Come and share. Mappa Mundi Mappa Mundi, one of the world’s unique medieval treasures, Cathedral. This is where England meets in the north west of Herefordshire. Deeply rural Brampton Bryon with breathtaking countryside, of rolling hills, ancient woods, forests and water meadows. The rivers, Lugg, Arrow and Teme, are all prominent features of the landscape. Some of the place names of the picturesque villages and hamlets are lost in the mist of time. Many were thriving medieval townships with bustling markets based on the wool of the Ryeland sheep bred by the monks in Leominster.

The market towns of Leominster, “The Town in the Marches”, and Kington, close to Offa’s Dyke Path, both offer a wide variety of shops, Eardisley cafes, pubs, places to stay and antique shops. Between Leominster and Kington are to be found ‘The Black and White Villages’ and an artisan cheese maker. To the south of Leominster is Queenswood Country Park and not far away near Bodenham can be found one of Herefordshire’s vineyards. To the north west of Leominster is Country, lying in the lee of the Hills AONB. Historically a land of political history and intrigue, dominated by the rich estates, offices of power and profit bestowed upon the Mortimer Marcher Lords of Wigmore.

From early summer to late autumn, festivals, village fetes and celebratory events flourish in this area.

Ewyas Harold The Golden Valley is the name given to the valley of the River Dore in west Herefordshire between Hereford and Hay-on-Wye. The valley is a picturesque area of gently rolling countryside sheltered by the Black Mountains of the Brecon Beacons AONB. It is here that Hatterall Ridge, the highest point in Herefordshire, forms the boundary between Wales and England. The escarpments, overlooking the River Wye, offer stunning long distance views of the Herefordshire countryside and into Wales.

This is a land of prehistoric people, stories and legends, dark skies and literary connections. This is excellent walking country with the running through the Golden Valley and Offa’s Dyke Path on the Black Mountains offering a mix of valley and wild highland ridge walks.

The diaries of the Reverend Francis Kilvert extol the beauty of this area and it is at Bredwardine where he is buried. Across the Hardwicke Wye from the church is a lovely garden to visit. Lying south of Hereford and The Wye Dixton Michaelchurch Valley AONB and between the rivers Wye and Monnow are the oldest references to Christianity in Herefordshire. Welsh was spoken well into the Middle Ages and many of the village and hamlet names date back to their Welsh heritage.

Flowing south from Hereford the Wye passes through fertile agricultural land and by lovely riverside villages before reaching the market town of Ross-on-Wye, the birthplace of the British tourist industry in 1745. The 700 year old parish church is the town’s most prominent landmark and its tall spire is visible when approaching the town from all directions. Opposite the church, The Prospect is a public garden offering a view of the famous horseshoe bend in the River Wye, as well as views to the far distant Black Mountains of the Golden Valley. The town is known for its excellent independent shops, picturesque streets and market square with its market hall.

From Ross-on-Wye the Wye flows into the Yatton Symonds Yat Gorge and rapids where there are lovely woodland trails.
