INTRODUCTION Welcome to Riddles of Ravenfair, a Short D&D 5Th Edition Adventure for 4 to 5 Characters at Level 4 to 5 INTRODUCTION Welcome to Riddles of Ravenfair, a short D&D 5th edition adventure for 4 to 5 characters at level 4 to 5. The runtime is estimated to be 2 or 3 sessions of 4 hours. If your players are below level 5 or you only have 3 players, you may want to adapt the adventure to accommodate for them as they might find it a bit hard. This adventure was originally set in the Chondalwood area, in the Vilhon Reach, along The Old Road. You can pick up the plot and drop it anywhere, although the description of the forest itself may need to be altered. The small, lonely village of Ravenfair sits at the cusp of the forest entrance – a dark and gloomy path waiting for new adventurers to swallow. A boy loses his mother, and all clues lead to the entrance of the forest. Will the adventurers have the strength to confront all creatures and puzzles that await them, and return the missing mother back to her heartbroken son? CONTENT WARNING This adventure contains mentions of miscarriages and the death of women during pregnancy. These are not explicitly shown or detailed but are mentioned in the backstory and are prevalent to the main story. They have been written in a way that is tactful but any of those details can be removed to create a more generalized version of the story. There are also some instances of xenophobia: one Elven character has issues with some internalised racism against Humans and Half-Elves. Although not immediately obvious, if the player characters roll a high enough Insight check, this would become apparent. BACKGROUND Ravenfair is a young village: settlers only started building it approximately 200 years ago. As such, it has a small population. The village itself is only known for its hunting and furniture making. They trade with local towns and have easy-going relationships with them. Ravenfair settlers were originally Elves, branching off from the Eldreth Veluuthra (a group of Elves dedicated to the removal of humans in Faerun). These Elves grew tired of the hatred spewing out of their predecessors and began their own settlement as a refuge for all creatures, particularly those running away from Eldreth Veluuthra. At the beginning, they were subject to raids from their former allies but after much deliberation, they came to an understanding: the village of Ravenfair would stay out of the forest. As such, they began building permanent structures on the edge instead. The local druids in the forest were initially suspicious of the settlement. After visiting a few times and getting to know the villagers, they decided they would be no harm. The druids gave their blessing and offered to exchange an item as a peace offering. The Elves gave the druids an Elven Chain and the druids offered the Elves a Staff of the Woodlands, which is now kept in a locked chest in the temple. The village grew little by little and began building bigger structures and businesses: a school, a general Samplestore, a butcher, a furniture shop, a small temple, and an inn. Enough to occupy themselvesfile and keep their economy going, albeit difficult at times. They paved some connecting roads to increase potential visitors who could stay at the inn, but the roads remain quiet most of the time. Every few years they suffer from some small attacks from neighbouring creatures: satyrs, centaurs, and bandits. 4 Only six months ago did the village start suffering some loses when it came to pregnancies. Not thinking much of the first missing baby, and knowing satyrs had raided recently, villagers put the loss to bad luck and grieved for the lost life. When a few months after, another baby went missing, they began a search. Some of the Elves, including the local priest, who had gone to investigate the wood, returned empty handed and convinced that the forest was too dangerous to investigate again. The priest pledged to keep the village as safe as possible and asked the villagers to never inspect the woods again. ADAPTING THIS ADVENTURE TO DIFFERENT SETTINGS This adventure is set in a forest – the descriptive passages will represent this and so will the enemies. The DM can set this adventure in a different type of forest, however, many of the descriptions will need to be changed. The enemies present in the area will also need adapting. Be cautious however, as this may affect some of the puzzles (specifically “Know Your History”). ADVENTURE HOOKS This adventure can be introduced in a variety of ways: • The party travel along the Old Road and enter Ravenfair. Entering the village, a villager asks them if they are adventurers (included in the beginning of the first chapter). • If a member of the party is part of a faction, they receive a letter from their organisation asking for them to stop by Ravenfair to help search for a missing woman. • Fliers, created seemingly by a young boy, are posted within a two-mile radius of the village, with a missing person’s report for the boy’s mother. ADVENTURE OVERVIEW This adventure plays out entirely in the village and the surrounding wood. • Chapter One – Welcome to Ravenfair: the party arrive at the village of Ravenfair and hear of the missing mother. After doing a bit of digging around, they believe something is hiding in the forest and behind the disappearance. • Chapter Two – The Forest of Complexities: as the party delves deeper into the forest, several creatures and puzzles bar their way further. Through persistence, clues seem to point towards a coven of hags, specifically after a meeting with a friendly treant. • Chapter Three – The Final Enemy: after the coven is dealt with by the party, they bring Drusilia home and find Erdan, the priest, to confront him. All monsters are available in the Monster Manual and in Appendix A, for ease of access. This version of Riddles of Ravenfair is accessible: there are limited illustrations and Alt-Text is provided for any images that have been included. Any text in an italicised red box is to read out loud. Sample file Any text in a yellow box is box text. 5 DRAMATIS PERSONAE Erdan Taletreader (he/him, Sun Elf) - Priest Erdan, a Sun Elf, has dark bronze skin and a head full of long copper hair that flows down to his hips. His eyes are the colour of molten gold and appear to stare into the souls of the creatures in front of him. As the local priest, he dresses is a gown decorated with small gems. He has a subtle air of superiority about him, but when he speaks to villagers, his voice is gentle and calming. Erdan has a subconscious dislike for drow, humans (especially rangers) and Half-Elves, which he tries to not let affect the way he speaks. He is one of the few spellcasters in the village and will often avoid using his spells unless they are for helping the people he is trying to protect. He is secretly aiding the hags and has a Hag Eye through which they can see his every movement. Vadania Nightbreeze (she/her, Moon Elf) – Tavern Owner Vadania, a Moon Elf, has a dark lavender complexion with silvery white hair. The colour of her eyes almost matches her skin. Her face is covered in small pin-prick tattoos that compliment her natural features. Although she is slender, she maintains some muscles from her days as a soldier. Vadania is the tavern owner in Ravenfair and is one of the first settlers. Since her days as an escapee of the Eldreth Veluuthra, she has been the mothering type: always making sure the villagers had food in their bellies and beds to sleep in. She is quite the confident type and is not afraid to tell visitors or drunkards to get out of her tavern. Vadania is also deeply religious and will attend the temple as often as her busy life permits her. Shava Starflower (she/her, Moon Elf) – Carpenter Shava can be considered peculiar – her passion for woodcarving has taken over her life. Quite clumsy and anxious, she tends to keep herself to herself but will still attend temple ceremonies and public events. Most of the villagers don’t know how to interact with her, other than to request some pieces of furniture. Her self-confidence has been affected by this and she has become more and more recluse as time goes by. Shava is also a Moon Elf and has a darker complexity that Vadania. Her hair is a bright shade of blue and she wears a set of common clothes to enable her to work better. Shava and Vadania get along quite well, enough for Shava to consider Vadania her closest friend. Immeral Elmbranch (he/him, Wood Elf) – Teacher Immeral is the local schoolteacher and teaches a variety of ages due to the nature of Ravenfair being a small village. Immeral is of an older generation and due to this he likes to spend time with people his own age. He tends to tire quickly when he is with the children and it seems it wasn’t quite the profession he imagined himself having when he left the Eldreth Veluuthra. After being a teacher for over a century, it is Samplesafe to assume he is having some regrets. file As a Wood Elf, he has light copper skin with eyes and hair a matching shade of brown. He wears a clean set of common clothes. Immeral can be quite a perfectionist: if there is a stain on his shirt, he will tend to 6 .

However, there are necessary shortcuts and parcels of information included in a carefully done game, or else the poor GM will be forever immersed in the morass of finding out the precise nature of who his players meet, who opposes them, and the like. It should not be necessary for the GM to roll dice to determine all the attribute scores of every non-player character, for instance. The game must include provisions for defining NPCs so that they can be generated quickly, but without causing every such character to be a mirror image of every other one. Although it is a relatively short and minor part of any game, this area is still interesting, for it will show just how well thought out the design is. Opponents are the creatures and things that will generally be adverse, at best non- hostile, to the PCs.

  • Ghosts of Saltmarsh Ddal Dungeon Master Resource Documentation
GHOSTS OF SALTMARSH DDAL DUNGEON MASTER RESOURCE DOCUMENTATION In the Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh, smugglers are procuring weapons for the lizardfolk who are preparing for a war with sahuagin that have been encroaching on their territory. The sahuagin are being directed by Thay to explore the islands and territories near Turmish, identifying and eliminating threats they’re capable of removing. In this case, the sahuagin feel as though they’re imminently qualified to remove a tribe of lizardfolk near Saltmarsh, and by extension, Turmish proper. *** In Danger at Dunwater, the lizard folk have invited representatives from the koalinth, the locathah, and the merfolk to a council in Dunwater. If the adventurers discover the truth, they may bargain to join the alliance on behalf of Saltmarsh. Likewise, as tensions mount and the koalinth break from the alliance, this opens the way for the sea elf Oceanus, who is willing (assuming everyone is on talking terms), to negotiate on behalf of the sea elves. At this point in the series, Saltmarsh’s the town council goes into deliberation with representatives from the lizardfolk, and ‘behind-the-scenes’ politics ensue. The characters play no part in these. *** In the meantime, the adventurers are approached by Aubreck, a local entrepreneur who’d like to essentially hire them to manage a Salvage Operation. He’d like the adventurers to recover his lost ship, which, if the stories are true, has made an appearance on the high seas. If the characters are successful and Aubreck’s fortune is restored, he becomes a wealthy and well-connected ally of the adventurers.
