Unix Command Line; Editors
Unix command line; editors Karl Broman Biostatistics & Medical Informatics, UW–Madison kbroman.org github.com/kbroman @kwbroman Course web: kbroman.org/AdvData My goal in this lecture is to convince you that (a) command-line-based tools are the things to focus on, (b) you need to choose a powerful, universal text editor (you’ll use it a lot), (c) you want to be comfortable and skilled with each. For your work to be reproducible, it needs to be code-based; don’t touch that mouse! Windows vs. Mac OSX vs. Linux Remote vs. Not 2 The Windows operating system is not very programmer-friendly. Mac OSX isn’t either, but under the hood, it’s just unix. Don’t touch the mouse! Open a terminal window and start typing. I do most of my work directly on my desktop or laptop. You might prefer to work remotely on a server, instead. But I can’t stand having any lag in looking at graphics. If you use Windows... Consider Git Bash (or Cygwin) or turn on the Windows subsystem for linux 3 Cygwin is an effort to get Unix command-line tools in Windows. Git Bash combines git (for version control) and bash (the unix shell); it’s simpler to deal with than Cygwin. Linux is now accessible in Windows 10, but you have to enable it. If you use a Mac... Consider Homebrew and iTerm2 Also the XCode command line tools 4 Homebrew is a packaging system; iTerm2 is a Terminal replacement. The XCode command line tools are a must for most unixy things on a Mac. -

2MORE on WORD PROCESSING Working with Larger Documents
Lesson 2: More on Word Processing MORE ON WORD PROCESSING Working with larger documents 2 LEARNING OUTCOMES In Lesson 1, you learned how to create, edit, and save a new document (the Conference Call letter). You practiced moving around the page on the screen. You carried out simple formatting and updating: adjusting margins, adding, deleting, and changing text. You learned to use the spelling checker. Finally, you used the printer to produce a hard copy (printed) version of your document on paper. You should be thinking of the computer as a tool for processing data of all kinds in much the same way as sculptors or wood carvers think of a hammer and chisel as tools for creating forms out of stone or wood. LibreOffice Writer has many functions that are designed to help you mold your writing into a work of art. In this tutorial you will review what you learned in Lesson 1. Then you will be introduced to functions of Writer that are especially valuable when working with longer documents. Amongst these are the following: Inserting page numbers tools for formatting text bullets and numbered lists more on indenting text creating sections and columns of text finding and replacing text moving and copying text within a document setting off a block of text with a border adding graphics to a Writer document A caveat before you begin: You'll find it easiest to use the tutorial if you follow the directions carefully. On computers there are always other ways of doing things, but if you wander off on your own be sure you know your way back! 31 ESSENTIAL LibreOffice: Tutorials for Teachers Copyright © Bernard John Poole, 2016. -
Creating an Accessible PDF File from a Neooffice Text Document
Creating an Accessible PDF File from a NeoOffice Text Document Opening Welcome to Accessibility in the MLTI, your how-to source for making ed tech accessible for students with disabilities. I'm Cynthia Curry. Introduction Today, it is my pleasure to walk you through the tools and features of a NeoOffice Text document that you will need if you plan to convert it to an accessible PDF file. For a complete and, hopefully, compelling explanation of why accessible PDF is important, please refer to my previous podcast entitled, “Time to Think About the Accessibility of PDF Files.” And for an overview of what makes any word processing file worthy of being converted to accessible PDF, regardless of the program, please refer to my podcast, “The 'Dos and Don'ts’ of Creating Accessible PDF from a Word Processing File.” That podcast will give you the 'in's and 'out's, regardless of your word processor of choice. Tools and Features of NeoOffice Text Documents Other word processing tools that I’ll address in future podcasts include Microsoft Word 2008 for Mac and Pages 08. Today, our focus is NeoOffice Text files. 1. Applying Styles First, recall that the most important part of creating an accessible PDF file from any word processor is to rely on your program's Styles. Applying Styles to your document creates a consistent and predictable format and layout for all users, particularly those who will access your document using assistive technology. To open the Styles and Formatting window in NeoOffice, choose Format from the main menu and then Styles and Formatting. -

Improving Code Autocompletion with Transfer Learning
Improving Code Autocompletion with Transfer Learning Wen Zhou Seohyun Kim Vijayaraghavan Murali Gareth Ari Aye Facebook Inc. Facebook Inc. Facebook Inc. Facebook Inc. Menlo Park, U.S.A. Menlo Park, U.S.A. Menlo Park, U.S.A. Menlo Park, U.S.A. [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] Abstract—Software language models have achieved promising results predicting code completion usages, and several industry studies have described successful IDE integrations. Recently, accuracy in autocompletion prediction improved 12.8% [1] from training on a real-world dataset collected from programmers’ IDE activity. But what if limited examples of IDE autocompletion in the target programming language are available for model training? In this paper, we investigate the efficacy of pretraining autocompletion models on non-IDE, non-autocompletion, and different-language example code sequences. We find that these unsupervised pretrainings improve model accuracy by over 50% on very small fine-tuning datasets and over 10% on 50k labeled examples. We confirm the real-world impact of these pretrainings in an online setting through A/B testing on thousands of IDE autocompletion users, finding that pretraining is responsible for increases of up to 6.63% autocompletion usage. Index Terms—Machine learning, neural networks, software language models, naturalness, code completion, integrated de- velopment environments, software tools I. INTRODUCTION Fig. 1: Example of autocomplete in an IDE. Autocompletion is the most frequently used IDE feature [2]. Significant attention has been given to improving suggestion prediction through machine learning [3]–[6] by feeding code to models as a sequence of tokens or even AST nodes [7]. -
