Introducción Suites ofimáticas Antes a acometer el análisis y la comparación de las suites ofimáticas OpenOffice.org y Microsoft Office, debemos tener claro qué es, de qué se compone y los distintos tipos de suite ofi- mática que existen: 1.- Definición: Una suite de aplicaciones de oficina o suite ofimática, consiste en un pa- quete integrado de programas informáticos diseñados para el trabajo de oficina, vendidos o distri- buidos de distintas formas de forma conjunta, y cuyas aplicaciones son capaces habitualmente de interactuar mutuamente en un nivel superior al que permitiría el sistema operativo y que posee una interfaz de usuario homogénea. 2.- Composición: Aunque no existe una norma estricta sobre los programas a incluir en una suite ofimática, la mayoría incluyen al menos un procesador de textos y una hoja de cálculo. De forma añadida, la suite puede contener un programa de presentación, un sistema de gestión de base de datos y herramientas menores de gráficos y comunicaciones. A su vez las suites ofimáticas tam- bién pueden contener: un programa de organización (agenda), un navegador web y un cliente de co- rreo electrónico y de noticias de red. 3.- Tipos: Básicamente las suites ofimáticas se pueden organizar de dos formas, por plata- forma y por forma de distribución: 1.- Por plataforma: Multiplataforma: OpenOffice.org, Gnome Office, StarOffice, Corel Word- Perfect Office, Lotus SmartSuite o Papyrus Office. Debido a esto y al pobre soporte de la suite de Microsoft de otros formatos abiertos, la habilidad de lectura y escritu- ra de formatos Microsoft Office es esencial para cualquier otra suite ofimática del mercado. Composición de una suite ofimática Una vez que conocemos en profundidad la definición, composición y tipos de suites ofimá- ticas, es el momento de conocer con mayor detenimiento en qué consisten los distintos programas y aplicaciones que las pueden componer: procesadores de textos, hojas de cálculo, programas de pre- sentación, sistemas de gestión de base de datos, programas de organización (agenda), clientes de co- rreo electrónico y de noticias de red, editores de páginas web o programas de auto edición, entre otros: 1.- Procesador de textos: Es un programa informático que se emplea para crear, componer, dar formato, modificar o imprimir documentos. Es el actual sustituto de las má- quinas de escribir, aunque con mayor capacidad, ya que pueden incluirse imágenes y mez- clar otros datos. También son conocidos como procesadores de palabras. Obtener un docu- mento impreso con formato suele ser el objetivo de estas aplicaciones, pero el archivo de texto enriquecido que producen también es útil como documento electrónico. Se distinguen de los editores de texto en que los procesadores pueden manejar texto con formato, imáge- nes, tablas y otros elementos que acompañan un documento de texto, mientras los editores sólo manejan archivos de texto plano. 2.- Hoja de cálculo: Es un programa que permite manipular datos numéricos y alfa- numéricos dispuestos en forma de tablas. Habitualmente es posible realizar cálculos comple- jos con fórmulas y funciones, así como dibujar distintos tipos de gráficas. Debido a la versa- tilidad de las hojas de cálculo modernas, se utilizan a veces para hacer pequeñas bases de da- tos, informes u otros usos. Las operaciones más frecuentes se basan en cálculos entre celdas, las cuales son referenciadas relativamente mediante la letra de la columna y el número de la fila, por ejemplo =B1*C1. Es también habitual el uso de la referencia absoluta anteponiendo el signo $ a la posición a fijar, por ejemplo, =B$1*$C$1 ($1 fija la fila y $C fija la columna en el caso de copiar esta celda a otra posición). 3.- Programa de presentación: es un paquete de software usado para mostrar infor- mación, normalmente mediante una serie de diapositivas. La transición de una diapositiva a otra puede ser animada de varias formas, y también se puede animar la aparición de los elementos individuales en cada diapositiva. 4.- Sistema de gestión de base de datos: Son un tipo de software muy específico, dedicado a servir de interfaz entre la base de datos, el usuario y las aplicaciones que la utili- zan. Se compone de un lenguaje de definición de datos, de un lenguaje de manipulación de datos y de un lenguaje de consulta.
