The June 1 event featured a record $1.199 million in purses, including the $500,000 Penn Mile--the richest race in track history. The event was an overwhelming success and helped insure the meet=s record gains. Four all-time Penn National wagering records were set on the Penn Mile card. They included highest total live wagering handle ($3,658,996), highest single race total handle ($1,139,478), highest on-track live handle ($225,136), and highest Pick 4 wagering pool ($199,514.) THE SALES YEAR At the North American and European sales we covered this year, a total of 25,064 horses were catalogued, of which 16,981 were listed as sold (67.8%), for total revenues of $1.286-billion, and an average of $75,753--not a small market, when you say almost 17,000 horses were sold at auction for an average of $75,000 each. The gross was up 23%--over $244 million--from corresponding 2012 figures, and the average up by 18%. But it=s not only in relation to last year=s figures that the numbers are significant, but also in relation to 2008, the Year of The Crash, which actually hit the horse business about the day the 2008 Keeneland September Sale ended. That year, a total of 34,238 horses were catalogued and 19,299 sold, for a total of just under $1.25 billion. So the 2013 total revenues actually climbed back above those from 2008, with over 9,000 fewer horses catalogued (-27%) but just 12% fewer sold. This is because the percentage of horses sold from those sent through the ring rose from TOTAL 1ST HALF SALES 70% in 2008 to 80% this year, and the percentage of YEAR CAT RING SOLD %W/D %S/R %S/C GROSS AVG those sold from horses catalogued rose from 56% in 2013 25,064 21,045 16,981 16.0% 80.7% 67.8% $1,286,355,048 $75,753 2008 to almost 68% in 2013. Revenues for the bottom tier plummeted 50%; in 2012 it was 58.8%, in 2013 59.2%. Also, by two-thirds, as is illustrated by the 65% drop (see they are really all pretty much >boutique= sales, now, table) in the first-half mixed sales from $92-million in except for OBS April in Ocala: that sale=s share of the 2008 to $32-million in 2010. Since first-half mixed North American 2-year-old market (which is 80% of the sales are for the most part the leftovers from the combined market; Europe is just 20% in 2-year-olds) previous year=s second-half (and much more important) has gone from 15% in 2008 to 35% in 2013 as it=s mixed sales, their behavior in the marketplace really gross and average ($60,535 in 2013) more than tells us principally about the >bottom commercial= tier. doubled. Oppenheim cont. Keeneland September was strong from start to finish- -the new four-day Book 1 (Week 1) format worked, but the second week was even stronger, accounting for over $40-million of the $60-million gain for the whole sale; for the second straight year over 72% of the horses catalogued in the second week were sold--a remarkable statistic for American sales. Keeneland September=s $60-million increase in revenues account for over half of the $114-million (19%) increase in revenues from all the yearling sales we covered. The European market was strong, buoyed by the participation of Qatari Sheikh Joann bin Hamad al-Thani=s Al Shabaq Racing during the first two of Tattersalls= three-day October 1 Sale. Al Shabaq (16 purchases) and Sheikh Mohammed=s racing supremo John Ferguson (42 purchases over the three days) each spent over 10 million guineas (about $17 million) at October 1. Whereas the bottom tier of the auction marketplace declined by two-thirds after 2008, the top tier declined by 50% (the middle tier, including probably 75% of the horses traded, dropped the least, by a third at the very worst, and in some cases by just 20%); the World Economic Collapse was responsible for some of that-- TOTAL US AND EUROPEAN 1ST HALF MIXED SALES probably delaying by five years some people getting in, YEAR CAT RING SOLD %W/D %S/R %S/C GROSS AVG and it probably also curtailed Maktoum spending, 2013 3,773 3,048 2,219 19.2% 72.8% 58.8% $57,996,459 $26,136 2012 3,406 2,779 2,063 18.4% 74.2% 60.6% $51,260,937 $24,848 considering they had spent an estimated $200 million 2011 3,707 2,995 2,129 19.2% 71.1% 57.4% $35,614,398 $16,728 on stallion prospects in 2007. Oppenheim cont. Supply has markedly contracted--only now will this trend start to reverse back, and that growth will be slow--while demand has markedly increased. Good news for the survivors. Thirty years ago at least 80% of the top sires--if not 100%--stood in North America, as compared to Europe. Now it is about 50-50, so even though the relative population is still nearly twice as big in America, there is an argument the advantage has shifted to Europe. Certainly this is reflected at the yearling sales: the top five sires on average, counting just North American and European stallions, all stood in Europe, headed by--who else?--Galileo, who, according to Instatistics (click here --NA & EU yearling sires, by average), had 65 yearlings sell, for an average of $718,022. Dubawi, Oasis Dream, and Montjeu all averaged over $500,000, while Monsun=s average (just six sold) was also over $400,000. The second five on average were all American, headed by Tapit ($408,340), followed by Dynaformer, Medaglia D=Oro, War Front, and Distorted Humor, who all averaged between $350,000-$400,000. cont. p 11 š › TOTAL YEARLING SALES YEAR CAT RING SOLD %W/D %S/R %S/C GROSS AVG 2013 11,699 10,431 8,563 10.8% 82.1% 73.2% $710,662,075 $82,992 2013 Sales Results $3 Million & Up 2012 11,480 10,190 8,130 11.2% 79.8% 70.8% $596,163,049 $73,329 2011 12,353 10,862 8,551 12.1% 78.7% 69.2% $545,937,506 $63,845 Galileo (Ire) - TATOCT $8,443,575 2010 13,969 12,224 8,973 12.5% 73.4% 64.2% $500,038,486 $55,727 Alluring Park (Ire) 5 mil guineas 2009 14,389 12,361 9,151 14.1% 74.0% 63.6% $534,688,983 $58,430 2008 15,692 13,546 9,625 13.7% 71.1% 61.3% $685,192,281 $71,189 Chicquita (Ire) GOFNOV $8,088,600 6 mil Euros Immortal Verse TATDEC $8,071,193 (Ire) 4.7 mil guineas Dancing Rain TATDEC $6,874,980 4 mil guineas Galileo (Ire) - TATOCT $6,084,666 Shastye (Ire) colt 3.6 mil guineas BetterBetterBetter FTNOV $5.2 million (Ire) Love and Pride FTNOV $4.9 million Dream Peace (Ire) TATDEC $4,636,643 2.7 mil guineas Awesome Maria KEENOV $4 million

Oppenheim cont. The second-half mixed sale averages for weanlings (click here) and covering sires (click here) were more of a mix between North America and Europe, although in both cases not nearly as many usually sell as do yearlings, which in 2013 accounted for 55% of the combined North American and European commercial market. Four of the top six by weanling average were European (Dubawi, New Approach, Galileo, and Oasis Dream ranked 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 6th respectively), two were American (1st War Front, 5th Tapit). Among the 10 covering sires which averaged over $600,000 for their in-foal mares, six were American (2nd War Front, 4th Distorted Humor, 5th Tapit, 6th Giant=s Causeway, 8th Bernardini, 9th Medaglia D=Oro), four were European (1st Dansili, 3rd Frankel, 7th Galileo, 10th Oasis Dream). A few leftovers from the America First movement find this shift towards Europe disquieting, but the facts speak for themselves: we don=t make this stuff up, we just collate, report, and comment on the numbers. The 2-year-old market, which as noted above is still 80% American, is dominated by American sires.
