Know Your Church Within sight of the Nations Capital at the corner of 11th and M Streets, N.W., in Washington, DC. stands the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church Financial Department. This impressive building is named in honor of Dr. Joseph Columbus McKinney, an outstanding layperson. “Joe”, as he preferred to be called, was elected Treasurer of the AME Church in 1972 and served with distinction. From humble beginnings in Magnolia, North Carolina, he excelled in all that he did as a churchman and in his career with the Federal Government as an electrical engineer. After moving to Washington, DC, he and his family joined Ward Memorial AME Church and became intricately involved in Church activities. Joe served 20 years as President of the Second Episcopal District Lay Organization and was a consultant to the Connectional Lay Organization (CLO) among his many church-wide leadership roles and significant accomplishments for the Worldwide AME Church. Following is the chronology of the significant events in the history of the AME Church Financial Department including those related to the work of Dr. McKinney. Significant Events in the History of the AME Church Financial Department 1844 - Collected two cents a month from each member to support a general fund and the Book Concern. 1868 - Collected one dollar annually from each member to support the Book Steward, Wilberforce University and the work of each annual conference. 1872 - Financial Department established as the general church treasury. Rev. J. H. W. Burley elected first Financial Secretary and office located in Washington, D.C. Eight other ministers became Fin. -

This study examines the role of free blacks, escaping slaves, and white Protestant evangelicals influenced by tenants of Kentucky’s Second Great Awakening who were inspired, directly or indirectly, to aid in African American community building. -

THE WESLEYAN WITNESS IN THE U.S. CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT: THE ALLEN LEGACY AGAINST 20TH CENTURY AMERICAN APARTHEID Dennis C. Dickerson James M. Lawson, Jr. Professor of History Vanderbilt University & Historiographer, African Methodist Episcopal Church In an address to the 1960 World Methodist Council in Oslo, Norway Archibald J. Carey, Jr., a pastor in the African Methodist Episcopal Church and a practicing attorney in Chicago, Illinois, focused on activists in the burgeoning civil rights movement whose religious witness drew from Wesleyan theology and praxis.1 Those whom he specifically mentioned from his denomination understood their role as derivative from Richard Allen, who challenged Methodism and America in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, to establish justice and equality in both church and society. Carey, a confidante to the young Martin Luther King, Jr. and a federal appointee fighting employment discrimination, believed that he and others were emulating Allen through their participation in contemporary civil rights struggles. I propose to tackle in this paper two interrelated issues. How did Carey and other Wesleyan clergy and lay understand the relationship between Methodism and societal change as pursued in this growing national crusade? How did they envisage Wesleyan theology and praxis and its application to the civil rights movement? Though the Allen legacy greatly informed and shaped the activism of such stalwarts as Carey, A. Philip Randolph, the militant labor leader, Oliver L. Brown of Brown decision fame, Rosa Parks, the Montgomery bus boycott heroine, and others, their praxis seemed tangential to the institutional behavior of the A.M.E. Church, the religious body to which they belonged. -

Du Bois, hardly a denominational partisan, described “the great African Methodist Church” as “the greatest Negro organization in the world.” Only the National Baptist Convention, recently organized in 1896, exceeded the half million membership that the African Methodist Episcopa- lians claimed. But the Baptists, an aggregation of autonomous state conven- tions and local congregations, lacked the hierarchal structure of this black Methodist body. The bishops, presiding elders, pastors, and many other officials of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church forged a cohe- sive infrastructure that proved to doubtful whites that African Americans were fully capable of effective self-governance. In addition to Du Bois’ praise for the institutional achievements of the AME Church, he was equally impressed with its longevity. Already a century old at the time of Du Bois’ comments, African Methodism had become a venerable religious body with bishops who were “among the most powerful Negro rulers in the world.” In 2004, Gayraud S. Wilmore, a Presbyterian and an African Ameri- can religious intellectual, confirmed Du Bois’ descriptions of the AME Church and called it “America’s premier ... predominantly black denomination.”1 Just as African Methodism drew Du Bois’ and Wilmore’s admiration, other scholars discovered crucial liberation themes in the AME narrative which explained, defined, and reflected the discourse and strategies that 1 W.
