Strides Toward Equality: The Portrayal of Black Female Athletes in Children’s Picturebooks Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Rebekah May Bruce, M.A. Graduate Program in Education: Teaching and Learning The Ohio State University 2018 Dissertation Committee: Michelle Ann Abate, Advisor Patricia Enciso Ruth Lowery Alia Dietsch Copyright by Rebekah May Bruce 2018 Abstract This dissertation examines nine narrative non-fiction picturebooks about Black American female athletes. Contextualized within the history of children’s literature and American sport as inequitable institutions, this project highlights texts that provide insights into the past and present dominant cultural perceptions of Black female athletes. I begin by discussing an eighteen-month ethnographic study conducted with racially minoritized middle school girls where participants analyzed picturebooks about Black female athletes. This chapter recognizes Black girls as readers and intellectuals, as well as highlights how this project serves as an example of a white scholar conducting crossover scholarship. Throughout the remaining chapters, I rely on cultural studies, critical race theory, visual theory, Black feminist theory, and Marxist theory to provide critical textual and visual analysis of the focal picturebooks. Applying these methodologies, I analyze the authors and illustrators’ representations of gender, race, and class. Chapter Two discusses the ways in which the portrayals of track star Wilma Rudolph in Wilma Unlimited and The Quickest Kid in Clarksville demonstrate shifting cultural understandings of Black female athletes. Chapter Three argues that Nothing but Trouble and Playing to Win draw on stereotypes of Black Americans as “deviant” in order to construe tennis player Althea Gibson as a “wild child.” Chapter Four discusses the role of family support in the representations of Alice Coachman in Queen of the Track and Touch the Sky. -

Patrick Alston, Sr., Lectionary Team Liturgist Worship Planning Notes The Church has failed to adequately accommodate and include its members who have disabilities. Beyond singing ministries offered by a few churches and wheelchair ramps in a few churches, little evidence can be found of our purposeful attempts to include all in the worship and activities of the Church. This must change! Technology now makes so much possible if we have willing hearts and minds. Many congregations now have within their ranks numerous persons who have Down syndrome or autism, who are blind or deaf, who use wheelchairs, or have other disabilities. Most of these persons are more than able to participate in the life of the Church if we assist them. Many of your church members have disabilities, as statistically one in five individuals has a disability. Present to the congregation a survey that includes questions about each member’s abilities, needs, and desires to be part of your church’s activities. Many people have disabilities that are not immediately apparent, such as vision difficulties, physical challenges, or mental illness, so it is important to ask everyone if his or her needs are being met. Do a thorough assessment of your programs and policies to determine if you have faithfully done all that you can do to include persons with disabilities and those who are differently-abled in the life of the church. This assessment should take no more than two months to complete and should include a plan for implementation, a budget, and timelines for each act that is to be implemented. -

Morrison Performances by Marcelle Davies-Lashley, Jhetti, and Samuel Guillaume Sunday, December 10, 2017 3:00 p.m. Apollo Theater Front Cover: Mahalia Jackson; March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom 1957 LIVE WIRE: HOW I GOT OVER - THE SPIRIT OF GOSPEL MUSIC In 1963, when Mahalia Jackson sang “How I Got Over” before 250,000 protesters at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, she epitomized the sound and sentiment of Black Americans one hundred years after Emancipation. To sing of looking back to see “how I got over,” while protesting racial violence and social, civic, economic, and political oppression, both celebrated victories won and allowed all to envision current struggles in the past tense. Gospel is the good news. Look how far God has brought us. Look at where God will take us. On its face, the gospel song composed by Clara Ward in 1951, spoke to personal trials and tribulations overcome by the power of Jesus Christ. Black gospel music, however, has always occupied a space between the push to individualistic Christian salvation and community liberation in the context of an unjust society— a declaration of faith by the communal “I”. From its incubation at the turn of the 20th century to its emergence as a genre in the 1930s, gospel was the sound of Black people on the move. People with purpose, vision, and a spirit of experimentation— clear on what they left behind, unsure of what lay ahead. -
Henry Mcneal Turner
Henry McNeal Turner Nationalist, Repatriationist, PanAfricanist, Minister, Author SECTION ONE SOURCE: https://blackpast.org/aah/turner-henry-mcneal-1834-1915 Black Nationalist, repatriationist, and minister, Henry M. Turner was 31 years old at the time of the Emancipation. Turner was born in 1834 in Newberry Courthouse, South Carolina to free black parents Sarah Greer and Hardy Turner. The self-taught Turner by the age of fifteen worked as a janitor at a law firm in Abbeville, South Carolina. The firm’s lawyers noted his abilities and helped with his education. However, Turner was attracted to the church and after being converted during a Methodist religious revival, decided to become a minister. He joined the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church and became a licensed minister in 1853 at the age of 19. Turner soon became an itinerant evangelist traveling as far as New Orleans, Louisiana. By 1856 he married Eliza Peacher, the daughter of a wealthy African American house builder in Columbia, South Carolina. The couple had fourteen children but only four of them survived into adulthood. In 1858 Turner entered Trinity College in Baltimore, Maryland where he studied Latin, Greek, Hebrew and theology. Two years later he became the pastor of the Union Bethel Church in Washington, D.C. Turner cultivated friendships with important Republican Congressional figures including Ohio Congressman Benjamin Wade, Pennsylvania Congressman Thaddeus Stevens, and Massachusetts Senator Charles Sumner. Turner had already become a national figure when in 1863 at the age of 29 he was appointed by President Lincoln to the position of Chaplain in the Union Army. -

Know Your Church Within sight of the Nations Capital at the corner of 11th and M Streets, N.W., in Washington, DC. stands the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church Financial Department. This impressive building is named in honor of Dr. Joseph Columbus McKinney, an outstanding layperson. “Joe”, as he preferred to be called, was elected Treasurer of the AME Church in 1972 and served with distinction. From humble beginnings in Magnolia, North Carolina, he excelled in all that he did as a churchman and in his career with the Federal Government as an electrical engineer. After moving to Washington, DC, he and his family joined Ward Memorial AME Church and became intricately involved in Church activities. Joe served 20 years as President of the Second Episcopal District Lay Organization and was a consultant to the Connectional Lay Organization (CLO) among his many church-wide leadership roles and significant accomplishments for the Worldwide AME Church. Following is the chronology of the significant events in the history of the AME Church Financial Department including those related to the work of Dr. McKinney. Significant Events in the History of the AME Church Financial Department 1844 - Collected two cents a month from each member to support a general fund and the Book Concern. 1868 - Collected one dollar annually from each member to support the Book Steward, Wilberforce University and the work of each annual conference. 1872 - Financial Department established as the general church treasury. Rev. J. H. W. Burley elected first Financial Secretary and office located in Washington, D.C. Eight other ministers became Fin. -

Pak Assistant Professor Bekisizwe Ndimande ABSTRACT This dissertation examines African student non-return within the larger historical pursuit of higher education in the United States by African students. Non-return by African students as addressed in this study is a process more than two centuries old extending directly across four defined phases of African student migrations. Key primary documents including the autobiographies of African students, correspondence between African students and other primary agents of African student migrations as well as oral interviews from African students turned permanent settlers from the fourth phase of African student migrations to the United States, are utilized in this dissertation. The perspectives of the non-returning African student in this dissertation address three important areas central to analyzing non-return; first, the factors that shaped the choices of non-returning African students to study in the United States; second, the social and cultural experiences encountered as a part of their educational migrations; and last, the decision to non-return. Non-return as articulated through interviews in this dissertation and supported by other primary and secondary source documentation is identified as a fluid process constantly shifting in response to internal and external pressures as well as historical and contemporary forces. -

Patrick Woliver Copyright by Crystal Yvonne Sellers 2009 Abstract ―I Sing Because I‘m Free‖: Developing a Systematic Vocal Pedagogy for the Modern Gospel Singer With roots in the early songs and Spirituals of the African American slave, and influenced by American Jazz and Blues, Gospel music holds a significant place in the music history of the United States. Whether as a choral or solo composition, Gospel music is accompanied song, and its rhythms, textures, and vocal styles have become infused into most of today‘s popular music, as well as in much of the music of the evangelical Christian church. For well over a century voice teachers and voice scientists have studied thoroughly the Classical singing voice. The past fifty years have seen an explosion of research aimed at understanding Classical singing vocal function, ways of building efficient and flexible Classical singing voices, and maintaining vocal health care; more recently these studies have been extended to Pop and Musical Theater voices. Surprisingly, to date almost no studies have been done on the voice of the Gospel singer. Despite its growth in popularity, a thorough exploration of the vocal requirements of singing Gospel, developed through years of unique tradition and by hundreds of noted Gospel artists, is virtually non-existent. -
