This was the last issue of my current subscription. As you might know I'm not such a big Rush fan anymore and I don 't like the new album so much. And furthermore I'm very disappointed that they don't come over to Europe. They haven't been here since '92! And I as a European fan (at least I was) think that's a (little) bit anti-social. They as artists have an obliga tion to all their fans; not only their American or Canadian fans. So, these are a few reason that I don't want to re-subscribe to The Spirit of Rush. For the clearness: IT'S NOT THE QUALITY OF S.O.R. THAT I DON'T RE-SUBSCRIBE. So I'll wish you all the best in the future, on the private level and with S.O .R. With kind regards, Hans Kist. Holland. What can I say, thank you for being honest with your reason for not re-subscri bing. But please realise that Rush don 't come here because they don't want to. They do, but they feel that the European record company does NOT do enough work to promote the band, now how many of us can argue with that? 2020 Life Writing Prize MAXINE DAVIES LIFE WRITING PRIZE SHORTLIST 2020 Dad’s Home Maxine Davies Dad’s Home Maxine Davies I am a feather for each wind that blows: Shall I live on to see this bastard kneel And call me father? better burn it now Than curse it then. But be it; let it live. - William Shakespeare, The Winter’s Tale 3 DAD’S HOME Maxine Davies HAPPY MEAL My dad leaves when I am the size of a raspberry. He announces my mam’s pregnancy on a local radio station, buys her a bunch of petrol station flowers and then does off a few weeks later. I meet him three times before I turn thirteen, which is when he moves into our house. The first time I am preoccupied in a game of “pretending that the laundry basket is a small boat”. I don’t remember that one. The second time is after I start school. Most of the other children in my class talk about an additional person living in their house: a dad. I ask my mam if I have one and she tells me that I do and asks if I would like to meet him. I agree, only to change my mind on the way there, but it’s 1996 and mobile phones haven’t really taken off yet and my mam doesn’t want to stand him up so she tells me that we won’t meet him anymore, but that we’ll go to McDonalds anyway. I get a Happy Meal.

Barnett Associate Professor of Communication Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania [email protected] Relevant Rhetoric, Vol. 7 (2016): Rush’s Lyrical Rhetoric of Oppression and Liberation 2 On April 18, 2013, members of the Canadian power trio Rush were among the artists inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a well-deserved honor that was long overdue. Formed in August 1968, Rush would join artists like Pink Floyd and Yes in shaping the music movement that would come to be categorized as “progressive” rock, or “prog rock,” a rock music sub-genre that Rush. • The Freddie Gruber Scholarship Fund in Memory of Buddy Rich and Nick Ceroli
The Freddie Gruber Scholarship Fund In Memory of Buddy Rich and Nick Ceroli Freddie Gruber began his drumming career in New York in the late 1940s. He played in the only big band to feature bebop sax innovator Charlie Parker, and he became close friends with Buddy Rich, a relationship that continued until Buddy’s passing in 1987. In the early ’60s Gruber played his way through Chicago and Las Vegas, eventually arriving in Los Angeles, where he became a key player in that city’s jazz scene. But Gruber soon discovered his true calling—teaching others how to play drums. Over the next forty years, Freddie’s students included a cross-section of drummers whose playing profoundly influenced the music of the times, among them John Guerin, Ian Wallace, Steve Smith, Dave Weckl, Mike Baird, Johnny “Vatos” Hernandez, David Bronson, Peter Erskine, Burleigh Drummond, and Neil Peart. One early student, Don Lombardi, founded the Drum Workshop company. Freddie had an unparalleled understanding of the physical “dance” involved in playing the instrument—the ergonomic relationship of the drummer to the drums. Without ever trying to disrupt a particular drummer’s “character,” he helped each student discover, express, and refine his own voice. One $2,500 prize will be awarded Eligibility: This annual, one year scholarship, is to assist a college student with tuition to an established, accredited institution of higher education, for the purpose of advanced study in the area of percussion, including but not limited to drumset. Scholarship is for one academic year, students may apply in subsequent years (no more than three years total).
