La Storia non è solo quella che si studia sui libri di scuola. E’ storia tutto ciò che ha contribuito al nostro sviluppo sociologico e che ha segnato gli eventi culturali. Ogni contesto storico è stato accompagnato dalla musica, colonna sonora che ha “battuto il tempo” e raccontato in modo indelebile la storia, fissandola a colpi di note nella nostra memoria. Nasce così la rubrica “33 giri di ricordi”, la musica che ha fatto la storia. Proseguono gli appuntamenti con i 33 giri di ricordi, quelli che hanno segnato un’epoca: oggi parliamo di “Supernatural” dei Santana. 1999 1° gennaio: nasce ufficialmente l’Euro, la moneta unica europea. Dimenticati i fasti degli anni’70, grazie ad album come “Abraxas” e “Caravanserai”, la stella del chitarrista messicano sta spegnendosi inesorabilmente. L’ultimo grosso successo, in termini di vendite e di popolarità, risale addirittura al 1980 con l’album parzialmente dal vivo “Moonflower” e l’omonimo singolo. Lui, guru delle sei corde per centinaia di musicisti, lui, che in piena epopea punk dominava le classifiche con la strumentale e struggente “Europa (Earth’s Cry Heaven’s Smile)”, lui, che riempiva stadi ed arene in tutto il mondo, sta vivacchiando, quasi in attesa dell’eutanasia. Il mix esplosivo che ha caratterizzato i primi lavori, ovvero un caleidoscopio di colori a base di salsa, rock, e blues, in una parola “fusion”, ma assolutamente “latin”, non “tira” più. Ma ci pensa il mitico produttore Clive Davis a dargli l’input giusto, con una sola parola: ringiovanire. Ringiovanire il sound, ringiovanire i collaboratori e gli autori, ringiovanire soprattutto la band. Aggiungete una serie di special guest da paura tipo Rob Thomas, The Product G&B, Everlast, Eric Clapton, Eagle-Eye Cherry e Manà, tra glia altri, ed ecco il risultato: trenta milioni di copie vendute, quindici volte disco di platino, e otto Grammy Awards, fra cui quello più prestigioso, ovvero Album dell’anno. Un ringiovanimento che passa anche attraverso due ulteriori capitoli: la timbrica della chitarra, dalla Gibson alla Paul Reed Smith, che gli confeziona la “PRS Santana”, e il cappello. Abbandonata la chioma cespugliosa e fluente degli esordi, la bandana degli anni ’80, Carlos Santana, complice una incipiente calvizie, opta per il cappello, rigorosamente Stetson, modello “Odenton pork pie”, e, giusto per avere più carisma e sintomatico mistero, gli occhiali da sole.. “Smooth” è un vero masterpiece: un mix esplosivo di generi, una “contaminazione” globale, estremamente sexy, condito da una chitarra che non tradisce mai, inconfondibile, nonostante il suono più acuto, a volte stridulo, rispetto al passato, e dalla voce sporca e affascinante di Rob Thomas. Il videoclip, 228 milioni di visualizzazioni, è un tripudio di colori, e good vibrations: sexy anche in questo caso, calza a pennello. Maria Maria “Oh, Maria, Maria. she fell in love in East L.A. Un ritmo che entra nelle vene, una flebo di energia, che illumina anche la giornata più buia. 349 milioni di visualizzazioni per il videoclip: se sexy si adattava a “Smooth”, qui siamo quasi hard. Corazòn espinado La mia preferita in assoluto. Lingua spagnola che ha sempre un suo perché, un ritmo trascinante, stacchi da paura, e soprattutto un intro copiato almeno un miliardo di volte. Canzone che è stata musa ispiratrice negli anni a venire, per tantissimi musicisti: il colombiano Juanes, uno fra i tanti. Grandissima performance vocale di Fernando Fher Olvera, cantante dei Manà, che rende il brano ancora più intrigante. Il videoclip ha realizzato “solo” 187 milioni di visualizzazioni e presenta un Carlos Santana che rispolvera il look anni ’70, e il resto della band in azione sul palco di un piccolo club. Nel 2005 esce “All that I am”, che vanta diverse collaborazioni di prestigio, soprattutto per l’hit-single “Just feel better”, che vede la voce di Steven Tyler degli Aerosmith, assoluta protagonista. Poi nuovamente l’oblio, per una decina d’anni, interrotto quasi per magia da “Santana IV”, album registrato con la formazione storica, che lo ha accompagnato nei primi anni ‘70, e che si è rivelato un gradito ritorno ad atmosfere vintage, ormai quasi dimenticate (soprattutto per i vecchi fans). Una cosa, il guru della chitarra, non ha mai fatto mancare ai milioni di supporters sparsi nel globo: i concerti. Sempre sold-out in ogni continente, in ogni nazione, anno dopo anno, decade dopo decade. Personalmente ho avuto la fortuna di assistere ai live più volte, in epoche diverse, e di apprezzare, oltre ai suoi assoli, le spettacolari sezioni ritmiche: batteristi come Graham Lear e Walfredo Reyes (mai abbastanza celebrato), e percussionisti come Josè “Chepito” Areas e Peter Escovedo (padre di Sheila E, batterista di Prince). Concerti dove tutti, ma proprio tutti, i presenti, diventavano chitarristi provetti, anche se solo per una notte: la magia di una “Samba pa ti”. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.

    Santana | Africa Speaks Carlos Santana (71) und seine diversen Bands gehören zu meiner musikalischen DNA. Die ersten drei Alben –Santana (1969), Abraxas (1970) und Santana III (1971) sowie Welcome (1972), Caravanserei (1973), Borboletta (1974) und das aus dem Jahre 2016 stammende Santana IV in nahezu Urbesetzung sind für mich unverändert aktuelle Musik, die regelmäßig auf dem Plattenteller dreht. Und die meisten der zahlreichen Veröffentlichungen auch, hinzukommen die frühen Journey, Abraxas Pool, einige Neil Schon Soloprojekte (herausragend: Beyond the Thunder), sie alle bilden meinen Santana-Kosmos ab. Das sich der Über-Gitarrist zeitweilig auf die Mainstream-/ Popseite geschlagen und erfolgreich radiotaugliche Schlagermusik abgeliefert hat, kann unter Betrachtung des bisherigen Gesamtkatalogs hingenommen werden. Um so erfreulicher, das Vorgestern veröffentlichte neue Album Africa Speaks, das -was für ein Klischee- überzeugend zu den Santana-Wurzeln zurückführt. Ehe ich jetzt in den Falle „falle“, wie es fast alle professionellen oder auch die unberufenenen Kritiker soeben tun, irgendein back-to-the-roots Geschwurbel ( … er kann es noch, klingt wie früher, zurückgekehrt in die musikalische Heimat etc.) und vertrackste Analysen über den Ursprung der 11 Titel anstelle, nur soviel: Africa Speaks ist ein tolles, mitreißendes Santana Album in der ursprünglichen Santana Sprache und die Fortsetzung von Santana 1 bis 4, so – als hätte es nichts dazwischen gegeben. Der Titel des Albums gibt genau das musikalische Thema wieder. Erstmals hat mit der 47 jährigen spanischen Concha Buika eine Sängerin das Sagen auf einem Santana Album und das wiederum schafft doch noch ein neues Feeling. Einfach klasse Musik. Damit ist alles gesagt. Das muß reichen. Hört Ihr`s, dann hört Ihr`s.

    Spirits Dancing in the Flesh: Santana and Carlos BY JONATHAN PRITCHARD-BARRETT ON 15/04/2016 MUSIC It has been 47 years since Santana’s eponymous first album was released. In the meantime the band have released 22 more studio albums and been through numerous personnel changes. Now the band’s classic early 70s line-up has reformed to release Santana IV, out today. The new album features Greg Rolie on vocals and Hammond B3 organ and guitarist Neal Schon – both of whom went on to form Journey. The other originals are percussionist Michael Carabello and drummer Michael Shrieve… as well as Carlos Santana himself. Guest vocals are provided by the soul maestro Ron Isley, lead singer of The Isley Brothers. The results should be cosmic. Originally formed in 1967 in San Francisco as The Carlos Santana Blues Band, Carlos might have been influenced by John Lee Hooker and BB King but they were not your usual blues band. Carlos was born in Mexico to the son of a Mariachi musician and the band incorporated highly percussive Latin rhythms from the start. Having emerged at the day-glo peak of the Summer of Love, their music has always had more than a dash of psychedelia. By 1969 the band were simply called Santana, they were a fixture on the San Francisco scene but hardly globally famous. All that would change when they performed at the Woodstock Festival that August. Their first album came out the same month and got to number 4 in the Billboard charts. Santana had pretty much created a new genre of music – funky Latin space rock.
