Burst U.S. Embassy Prepared by: Australian Centre for Retail Studies Report Highlights: Within the global confectionery market, Australia is ranked 11th for sugar confectionery consumption and 9th for chocolate. Nine out of ten people regularly consume confectionery from both the chocolate and sugar confectionery categories. Approximately 55 percent of confectionery sales are through supermarkets, with the remaining 45 percent sold through outlets such as milk-bars, convenience stores and specialty shops. New products are introduced fairly regularly to the Australian confectionery market; however highly innovative products are less common and this may be an area that offers opportunities for U.S. exporters to be successful in this market. In 2001, Australia was the 15th largest export market for U.S. confectionery products. Includes PSD changes: No Includes Trade Matrix: No Unscheduled Report Canberra [AS1], AS This report was drafted by consultants: The Australian Centre for Retail Studies Monash University PO Box 197 Caulfield East VIC 3145 Tel: +61 3 9903 2455 Fax: +61 3 9903 2099 Email: [email protected] Disclaimer: As a number of different sources were used to collate market information for this report, there are areas in which figures are slightly different. The magnitude of the differences is, in most cases, small and the provision of the data, even though slightly different, is to provide the U.S. exporter with the best possible picture of the Australian Confectionery Sector where omission may have provided less than that.

  • ACCC Statement of Issues Regarding Sale of Pacific Magazines to Bauer Media
Thursday, 19 December 2019 ACCC Statement of Issues regarding sale of Pacific Magazines to Bauer Media The ACCC has released a Statement of Issues today expressing concerns about some limited aspects of the proposed sale of Pacific Magazines to Bauer Media, specifically common ownership of New Idea and Woman's Day, and common ownership of That's Life and Take 5. Seven West Media (ASX: SWM) believes that the ACCC has taken an overly narrow view of the competitive dynamics and constraints at play for magazine publishers and has not properly taken into account the competitive constraints faced by magazine publishers from digital and social media platforms. James Warburton, SWM Managing Director and CEO, said: “Advertising spend on consumer magazines represents only 2% of total advertising spend in Australia, whereas internet advertising spend accounts for more than 46% of total advertising spend in Australia.1 “At a time when the ACCC itself is looking at the impact of digital platforms on traditional media businesses and in the face of proposed Government reforms to redress the imbalance between traditional media businesses and the dominant digital platforms, the concerns that have been expressed seem misplaced. “The transaction represents an opportunity to provide a stronger base for these titles to compete into the future against digital platforms.” SWM will continue to engage with the ACCC as its process continues. End. • Countdown and Cult Music Television Programmes
Giuffre, Liz Countdown and Cult Music Television Programmes Countdown and cult music television programmes: an Australian case study Liz Giuffre Abstract Music television programs, programs that focus on music for their core content, have been produced all over the world for all types of markets. However there remains little sustained work on them beyond studies of key production periods, franchise waves or biography-like narratives. This article shows that theories of Cult TV can be applied to music television programs to help explore this neglected form, as well as helping to expand Cult TV’s theoretical reach beyond its traditional fare of narrative driven, fiction series. This article offers 1970s and ‘80s Australian music television program Countdown as a prime example of Cult TV, first in the context of its initial production and consumption in 1970s and ‘80s Australia, and also in terms of its subsequent influence on contemporary audiences from a historical perspective. The Cult TV frame extends to the program itself in its original incarnation, as well as additional recontextualisations in new music television programs, and the continued work of its former host, Ian ‘Molly’ Meldrum. Introduction1 Music television is an unusual type of programming. It provides both regular entertainment that is watched intensely while on air, and produces key moments that survive well in audience collective memory. ‘Live’ music performance and interview series Countdown remains an icon of the Australian television and music industries.2 Created by the national public service broadcaster, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC),3 the show was broadcast from 1974 to 1987 on Sunday evenings and was highly influential with television audiences and the broader music industry.4 Countdown provided opportunities for music artists and audiences to engage with each other in a way that had not previously been possible.
