Salon D-E Session Designer: Susan Brown Public figures and thinkers with diverse perspectives are traveling the country to discuss our nation’s budgetary challenges and entitlement problems. Representatives from these organizations will discuss in plain terms why budget analysts of diverse perspectives are increasingly alarmed by the nation’s daunting long-term fiscal outlook. The emphasis of the presentation is on the key areas in which they have found consensus, including: ● The overall dimensions of the problem ● The nature of the realistic trade-offs that must be confronted in finding solutions ● The adverse and inequitable consequences for future generations if we fail to make serious changes, sooner rather than later. The Role of Foundations Beyond Traditional Grantmaking Salon D Session Designer: Theophilus Gregory Come to this session and hear the recent findings of The Foundation Center’s study on non-grant direct charitable activities of independent and family foundations. Learn about challenges in documenting the purpose and effectiveness of such activities for community members, nonprofits and the IRS from one foundation that has implemented more than a dozen programs over the last 20 years. Providing Working Capital to the Working Poor Room 406 Session Designers: Amy Meadows and Jennifer Esterline Microfinance—giving people the financial tools they need to work their way out of poverty—is an increasingly popular area of grantmaking for many foundations. Panelists will include both grantmakers supporting agencies that have received microfinance grants and the recipients that provide microfinance opportunities to low-income communities. Together they will present the basics of how microfinance works internationally and domestically, and discuss best practices and emerging standards. Speakers: R.
