The editing staff of the Journal carefully considered all student articles submitted for publication in order to maintain the high-quality standards the Journal has reflected in its long existence. The articles included in this journal discuss an array of topics including Colorado’s history as well as international history. The first article, Edward “Teddy” Scott’s “A Lady by Footlight: Female Impersonation in Nineteenth Century Denver,” argues that female impersonation, especially amongst actors, united diverse groups of people because the impersonators dwelled in an ambiguous social state. Mark Ortiz’s “Art Deco, Exotic Revivalism, and Modernism in Denver’s Fantasy Theaters” discusses the architecture of four Denver theaters: the Mayan, the Paramount, the Aladdin, and the Cooper. Mark argues that the architecture of each theater reflects the social and cultural environment in which they were created. Kayla Hladky’s “The National Western Stockshow: For the Cattleman and the City Person Alike” discusses the role of the show in Colorado’s history. She argues that careful planning and advertising played a large role in the show’s success as a prominent, Colorado tourist attraction. Brittany Huner’s “‘Bless ‘Em:’ The Forgotten WACs of Colorado’s Camp Hale” illuminates the forgotten role the Woman’s Army Corps (WAC) played at Camp Hale, Colorado during World War II. Brandon Stanley’s “Ancient Monarchies in a New Age: Austria-Hungary’s Complicated Relationship with the Ottoman Empire” highlights the tenuous relationship between the empires during World War I. He argues that while the relationship between both empires was not perfect, they nonetheless were forced to work together during World War I. Serving as senior editor of the Journal this year has been a great honor and privilege. Rice’s “1492.” Credit: Rocky Mountain News, 1 Dec. 1895 A LADY BY FOOTLIGHT Female Impersonation in Nineteenth-Century Denver By Teddy Scott n 1895, a small, effeminate man sat in cell number 5 at Denver’s police headquarters. He calmly answered questions from officers I and the local press, who were curious about his “peculiar” lifestyle. Joe Gilligan was arrested that evening on charges of burglary and forgery, but this was not what readers of the Evening Post wanted to know about. They instead wanted to know why he was in possession of a lady’s wardrobe, as well as several romantically suggestive letters between himself and other men. The suspect denied nothing, even revealing that Denver was filled with “others like himself,” further baffling both officers and reporters with an apparent lack of shame over his unorthodox lifestyle. Seizing the opportunity to capitalize on a controversial story, the press delved into his personal correspon- dences, printed them in the papers, and further dragged the young man down with descriptions of his “girlish” behavior. They even went as far as to call him the “Oscar Wilde” of Denver, which in 1895 had unambiguously negative connotations.1 Just a few months after Gilligan began his sentence at the peni- tentiary, a professional actor named Richard Harlow took his bow on Denver’s grandest stage, the Tabor Grand Opera House, to the sound of uproarious applause. While the operetta performed that evening might have left a lukewarm impression upon the audience, they nonetheless returned to the theater night after night to enjoy the grace and skill of the production’s star performer. Both Gilligan and Teddy is a native of Denver and is currently working toward his Master of Arts in American History, with a focus on the American West and a minor in Preservation. Originally a man of the stage, he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre from Elon University in North Carolina. He would like to thank Dr. Bill Wagner, Dr. Tom Noel, Dr. Gabriel Finkelstein, David Duffield, and Josef Maurer for their assistance in the research, writing, and editing of this paper. Harlow were female impersonators, but unlike Gilligan, Harlow’s female illusion would gain him “emphatic praise” from the Evening Post for his “attractive impersonation” of the character of Isabella. 2 These two examples highlight an apparent double standard. They raise the question: why was female impersonation socially acceptable (and even celebrated) during the late — A Lady by Footlight nineteenth-century, as long as it was confined to vaudeville or to legitimate theatrical stages?3 Serving as the most public form of constructed female illusion, why did profes- sional performers, like Richard Harlow, escape the charges and opprobrium subjected to Teddy Scott non-professional counterparts like Joe Gilligan? The obvious answer to the question of social acceptance could be in the satirical nature of these performances — that female imperson- ation was

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to our members, professional staff, and volunteers who have put enormous time and energy into making this conference a reality. This is my final conference as SCMS President, a position I have held for the past four years. Prior to my presidency, I served two years as President-Elect, and before that, three years as Treasurer. As I look forward to my new role as Past-President, I have begun to reflect on my near decade-long involvement with the administration of the Society. Needless to say, these years have been challenging, inspiring, and expansive. We have traveled to and met in numerous cities, including Atlanta, London, Minneapolis, Vancouver, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles. We celebrated our 50th anniversary as a scholarly association. We planned but unfortunately were unable to hold our 2009 conference at Josai University in Tokyo. We mourned the untimely death of our colleague and President-Elect Anne Friedberg while honoring her distinguished contributions to our field. We planned, developed, and launched our new website and have undertaken an ambitious and wide-ranging strategic planning process so as to better position SCMS to serve its members and our discipline today and in the future. At one of our first strategic planning sessions, Justin Wyatt, our gifted and hardworking consultant, asked me to explain to the Board why I had become involved with the work of the Society in the first place.

Grimmer BM, University of Cincinnati June 2011 Committee chair: Jonathan Kregor, PhD i ABSTRACT Chromatically meandering, even teasing, Carmen’s Seguidilla proves fatally seductive for Don José, luring him to an obsession that overrides his expected decorum. Equally alluring, Dalila contrives to strip Samson of his powers and the Israelites of their prized warrior. However, while exotic femmes fatales plotting ruination of gentrified patriarchal society populated the nineteenth-century French opera stages, they contrast sharply with an eighteenth-century model populated by merciful exotic male rulers overseeing wandering Western females and their estranged lovers. Disparities between these eighteenth and nineteenth-century archetypes, most notably in treatment and expectation of the exotic and the female, appear particularly striking given the chronological proximity within French operatic tradition. Indeed, current literature depicts these models as mutually exclusive. Yet when conceptualized as a single tradition, it is a socio-political—rather than aesthetic—revolution that provides the basis for this drastic shift from femme idéale to femme fatale. To achieve this end, this thesis contains detailed analyses of operatic librettos and music of operas representative of the eighteenth-century French exotic archetype: Arlequin Sultan Favorite (1721), Le Turc généreux, an entrée in Les Indes Galantes (1735), La Recontre imprévue/Die Pilgrime von Mekka (1764), and Die Entführung aus dem Serail (1782).

Brink Productions’ by Molière A new adaptation by Paul Galloway Directed by Chris Drummond INTRODUCTION Le Malade imaginaire or The Hypochondriac by French playwright Molière, was written in 1673. Today Molière is considered one of the greatest masters of comedy in Western literature and his work influences comedians and dramatists the world over1. This play is set in the home of Argan, a wealthy hypochondriac, who is as obsessed with his bowel movements as he is with his mounting medical bills. Argan arranges for Angélique, his daughter, to marry his doctor’s nephew to get free medical care. The problem is that Angélique has fallen in love with someone else. Meanwhile Argan’s wife Béline (Angélique’s step mother) is after Argan’s money, while their maid Toinette is playing havoc with everyone’s plans in an effort to make it all right. Molière’s timeless satirical comedy lampoons the foibles of people who will do anything to escape their fear of mortality; the hysterical leaps of faith and self-delusion that, ironically, make us so susceptible to the quackery that remains apparent today. Brink’s adaptation, by Paul Galloway, makes Molière’s comedy even more accessible, and together with Chris Drummond’s direction, the brilliant ensemble cast and design team, creates a playful immediacy for contemporary audiences. A City of [ PART 1 OF 2 ] Theatres By Marc Wanamaker n Noted theatre historian Marc Wanamaker is Hynda’s guest columnist this month. Part two continues next month. t is not generally known, but Los Angeles was one of the largest Itheatre towns in the United States dating back to the 19th cen- tury. Beginning with legitimate stages and later cinema theatres, Los Angeles boasted more than several thousand theatres sprawl- ing throughout the entire Los Angeles area by the 1920s. Every main street in every town had a theatre on it, and by the time movies came to Los Angeles there were even more built that were bigger and better. Los Angeles had a grand legitimate theatre history since the mid-19th century as described by famed stage and film actor Hobart Bosworth, who worked in several of the downtown theatres in the 1880s and 1890s. Bosworth described the theatre world of Los Angeles as “surprisingly robust and patronized by thousands of residents who were knowledgeable about the plays and players.” Los Angeles had its first semi-permanent stage, an open-air cov- ered platform with a proscenium arch near the Plaza in 1848, but the most important theater to be built in Los Angeles was the 1,200-seat Ozro Childs Grand Opera House, built in 1884 on Main Street near First. From the mid-1880s, Los Angeles became a regular stop for touring theatrical companies, starring some of the world’s most illustrious stars including Sarah Bernhardt, Maurice Barrymore, Lillian Russell, Anna Held and Lionel Barrymore, among many others.

Doctor of Musical Arts (Performance), May 2012, 85 pp., 6 tables, 35 illustrations, references, 84 titles. Sixteenth century commedia dell’arte actors relied on gaudy costumes, physical humor and improvisation to entertain audiences. The spieltenor in the modern operatic repertoire has a similar comedic role. Would today’s spieltenor benefit from consulting the commedia dell’arte’s traditions? To answer this question, I examine the commedia dell’arte’s history, stock characters and performance traditions of early troupes. The spieltenor is discussed in terms of vocal pedagogy and the fach system. I reference critical studies of the commedia dell’arte, sources on improvisatory acting, articles on theatrical masks and costuming, the commedia dell’arte as depicted by visual artists, commedia dell’arte techniques of movement, stances and postures. In addition, I cite vocal pedagogy articles, operatic repertoire and sources on the fach system. My findings suggest that a valid relationship exists between the commedia dell’arte stock characters and the spieltenor roles in the operatic repertoire. I present five case studies, pairing five stock characters with five spieltenor roles.
