There are portions of commentary that startle the reader with their application to real life. For example, "I never dispute other people's opinions of myself" said Reith. Dordolio was a man Reith found impossible to take seriously. An incense stick fell to the floor where it began to smolder. Reith picked it up and replaced it on the tray. "Why do you do that"? asked Helsse in sardonic wonder. "You must supply your own answer", answered Reith. There are many similar gems, including exquisite, longer exchanges between man and aliens that spotlight the inherent cultural differences between two species. Vance has a wonderful skill at presenting to the reader such matters with detail, and even humor.5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Dave HBy Dave H"City of the Chasch" is book I of IV from the "Planet of Adventure Collection" and is another remarkable story from the fertile imagination of one of the worlds most prolific, original, and masterful, storytellers. By injecting humanoid old earthers into this ancient otherworldly culture and environment the story becomes even more engrossing and believable. WOW...this is an odyssey of epic proportions that sci/fi fantasy/adventure aficionados don't want to miss; Jack Vance at his best!"Servants of the Wankh: Book II of IV" the epic saga continues as Adam Reith and his travel companions, now including Lokhar's, plot their escape from Tschai back to earth. A thrill a minute as they battle for their lives against the Wankhmen, Niss, and Yao's! The compelling storyline and elegant wordsmithery will grab you and keep you awake as the tension builds. Fantastic, captivating, entertaining, and engrossing, with intensely dark moments offset with more suspense and action...what a ride!!!"The Dirdir" book III of IV is quite simply Amazing, Amazing, Amazing! A departure from Jack Vance's standard fare, at least those that I've read so far, in the it is a blend of sci/fi, fantasy, adventure, and mystery. Each time I select a new series of his it is equal to or better than the last one which in itself is an extraordinary accomplishment. The depth and richness of the protagonist and his companions combined with multiple alien variations spawned by men as antagonists coupled with incredible richly developed otherworldy settings makes this epic series enthralling, compelling, entertaining, and another best in genre...truly a must read masterpiece for all sci/fi fantasy/adventure fans from one of the worlds finest authors!"The Pnume: Book IV of IV" the final book in the "Planet of Adventure Series" completes one of the greatest, most exciting journeys, in literature that I've ever embarked on. Brilliant scripting, extraordinary backdrops, incredibly deep and multi-layered storyline that I didn't ever want to end. To my mind this ranks as one of Jack Vance's greatest stories. I have come to the conclusion that perhaps the only way to do justice in reviews about his work is to say...It's Jack Vance, what more is there to say!3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. ExcellentBy ArtFanPlanet of Adventure is a series of four novels: City of the Chasch, Servants of the Wankh, The Dirdir, and the Pnume. Each one of these names refers to one of the alien races residing on the planet. This series is my most recent reading of Vance - I have read probably about 20 Vance novels altogether so far - and it is an outstanding series. Although not quite as rich and fulfilling as my favorite series - the Cadwal Trilogy - it comes close. There is a hero and his two companions - all three are honest, loyal, and morally upright .... in a landscape of characters, both alien and human, consisting of scoundrels, cheats, or flat out evil individuals: everyone looking out for their own interests. Not only is an interesting plot, but Vance always creates imagery: certain images from this series of books will stick in my mind for a long time to come: the 10-foot tall stranger creature the Phude lurking around in its cloak and hat, playing tricks on unattentive characters, or worse, dismembering them. Like with a lot of Vance, these books are not for the faint-hearted - there is a substantial amount of blood and gore, or disturbing images. But that's one of the things that makes Vance, Vance. The only thing I don't like is the title of the series: "Planet of Adventure" is a childish title which makes it seem like we're dealing with simple pulp science fiction, which is far from the case. Better would have been a more thoughtful title that reflects the true nature of the series. If my book reviews were for sci-fi only, I would give this series five stars.

Stranded on the distant planet Tschai, young Adam Reith is the sole survivor of a space mission who discovers the world is inhabited - not only by warring alien cultures but by human slaves as well, taken early in Earth's history. Reith must find a way off the planet to warn Earth of Tschai's deadly existence. Against a backdrop of baroque cities and haunted wastelands, sumptuous palaces and riotous inns, Reith will encounter deadly wastrels and murderous aliens, dastardly villains and conniving scoundrels - and always the random beauty in need of rescue.
