Barge August 2018 Major Subject: Communication Copyright 2018 David Nicholas Munson ABSTRACT In this project, I track the development of Margaret Fuller’s rhetoric of transcendental nationalism within the context of the Roman revolution in 1848. My central purpose is to situate the legacy of Margaret Fuller in the field of rhetorical theory and criticism, as well as to position her dispatches from Italy as the culmination of her work—not an eclipse of her previous writings, but a vital part of any understanding of the woman, the writer, the Transcendentalist, the feminist, the nationalist, the revolutionary that was Margaret Fuller. Furthermore, I argue that Fuller’s dispatches offer a model for a distinctly transcendental form of nationalism through her combined skills, such as critiquing large networks of power, her classical knowledge and familiarity with the language of myth, her growing narrative form and structure, her love of German-Romantic philosophy and literature, her literary nationalist voice, and her deeply-rooted belief in the collective power of the Italian people. Although arriving as a travel-writer abroad, Fuller was also a foreign correspondent for the New-York Tribune with the task of reporting back on any and all happenings. Europe, at the time, was in a tumultuous state, which would soon erupt in open insurrection and full-blown revolution. -

Classic Poetry Series James Russell Lowell - poems - Publication Date: 2012 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive James Russell Lowell(22 February 1819 – 12 August 1891) James Russell Lowell was an American Romantic poet, critic, editor, and diplomat. He is associated with the Fireside Poets, a group of New England writers who were among the first American poets who rivaled the popularity of British poets. These poets usually used conventional forms and meters in their poetry, making them suitable for families entertaining at their fireside. Lowell graduated from Harvard College in 1838, despite his reputation as a troublemaker, and went on to earn a law degree from Harvard Law School. He published his first collection of poetry in 1841 and married Maria White in 1844. He and his wife had several children, though only one survived past childhood. The couple soon became involved in the movement to abolish slavery, with Lowell using poetry to express his anti-slavery views and taking a job in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as the editor of an abolitionist newspaper. After moving back to Cambridge, Lowell was one of the founders of a journal called The Pioneer, which lasted only three issues. He gained notoriety in 1848 with the publication of A Fable for Critics, a book-length poem satirizing contemporary critics and poets. The same year, he published The Biglow Papers, which increased his fame. He would publish several other poetry collections and essay collections throughout his literary career. Maria White died in 1853, and Lowell accepted a professorship of languages at Harvard in 1854. -

The course begins with Puritan poets—some orthodox, some rebel spirits—who wrote and lived in early New England. Focusing on Anne Bradstreet, Edward Taylor, and Michael Wigglesworth, among others, we explore the interplay between mortal and immortal, Europe and wilderness, solitude and sociality in English North America. The second part of the course spans the poetry of America's early years, directly before and after the creation of the Republic. We examine the creation of a national identity through the lens of an emerging national literature, focusing on such poets as Phillis Wheatley, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Edgar Allen Poe, and Ralph Waldo Emerson, among others. Distinguished guest discussants in this part of the course include writer Michael Pollan, economist Larry Summers, Vice President Al Gore, Mayor Tom Menino, and others. Many of the course segments have been filmed in historic places—at Cape Cod; on the Freedom Trail in Boston; in marshes, meadows, churches, and parlors, and at sites of Revolutionary War battle. -

J19 Regional Nationalism and the Ends of the Literary World Alex Zweber Leslie Rutgers University What we now call antebellum American lit er a ture emerged from a tangle of conflicting attachments to overlapping scales of cultural geography. Amer i ca was both more and less than a nation in the 1840s; imperial in regard to expansionism and provincial in rela tion to England, it was also a collection of regions loosely bound by disjointed networks of production.1 The Literary World (1847–53), an influential weekly trade journal edited by literary kingmaker Evert Duyckinck, illuminates how nationalist discourse within this contested cultural landscape was often not about the nation at all but rather about one or another of the regions jostling for cultural space.2 As its “Intro ductory” prospectus prefigures, theLiterary World’s vision of Ameri can lit er a ture was refracted through a distinctly New York lens: “ Here may there be . something of the countenance of nature; something of the thoughts and influences of a great city; something of the free breath of the republic.”3 The passage voices a seemingly familiar assertion of literary nationalism by invoking the republic and a distinctive lit er a ture to represent it. But this rhetorical thrust is hijacked by the “ great city” that mediates between nation and nature, and that the “Introductory” confidently assumes its readers will recognize not as Boston or Phila delphia but as New York. New York was indeed a metropolis, but the city’s codependence on networks of material, cultural, and human circulation that extended beyond it also made New York a region in competition with other re gions.4 This slippage allows “New York”— printed in the Literary World’s masthead and again above the “Introductory” without the delimiting 249 250 The Journal of NineteenthCentury Americanists J19 “City”—to double as a region of the nation. -

Patterson, Ph.D. Entitled The Poetics of Haunting and the Haunting of Poetics: Author and Reader as Uncanny Doubles in the Work of Edgar Allan Poe, this project examines the crucial tension between author and reader that animates Poe’s poetic theories and gives rise to the doppelganger as the central figure in all of his work. This study begins by exploring how Poe has emerged in recent years as one of the most original and enduring of antebellum American authors despite his long dismissal by literary scholars as juvenile, vulgar, and merely popular. As the young nation’s foremost critic and (along with his contemporary Nathaniel Hawthorne) its primary innovator in the modern short story form, Poe insists that by combining a focus on compositional "unity of effect" with skillful and meticulous literary craftsmanship, a text can be made to embody authorial intention so fully that it completely determines the reader's experience and thus enforces authorial control over the work's meaning. -

“Melville: Finding America at Sea” Checklist of Items in Exhibition Introduction, Case 1 of 1 Moby-Dick is epic prose-poem, scientific treatise, industrial exposé, philosophical exploration, travelogue, Shakespearean tale of revenge, and much more—all rolled into one whale-sized package. Melville’s book can be read as one of the first distinctively American masterpieces, embracing these diverse, disparate materials to form a whole greater than the sum of its parts. 1. Herman Melville The Whale Published in London by Richard Bentley in October 1851 Call number and to request viewing: VAULT Melville PS2384 .M6 1851m (Copy 1) The true first edition of Moby-Dick appeared in England in October 1851, in an edition of 500 copies. 2. Herman Melville Moby-Dick, or, The Whale Published in New York by Harper & Brothers in November 1851 Call number and to request viewing: VAULT Melville PS2384 .M6 1851k This first American edition shows the major variations between the texts of the American and English editions, starting with their different titles. See the case in the next room of the Trienens Galleries on the making of the Northwestern-Newberry Edition for another example of these differences. While the title Moby-Dick was hyphenated in the first edition, the whale’s name was not hyphenated in the text—the reason for which is rather unclear. This exhibition follows the common practice of hyphenating when referring to the book, but not to the whale, and not to other editions or works such as plays and films which do not hyphenate the title.
