18 P.G. Wodehouse Heresy can mean doing obstinately what you do best, and doing it in the most improbable places. Jeeves, for example, was conceived and born in New York. At least P.G. Wodehouse was living there when he À rst thought of him. That may sound like an odd place to do it, but the fact is not in doubt. After two discontented years in a London bank and a little journalism, Wodehouse settled in Greenwich Village (off and on) in 1909. He had first visited America in 1904, drawn by its boxing tradition, but he soon came to believe he could write for it; and it was there in the autumn of 1914 that he met and married a young English widow called Ethel, whose daughter he adopted. War was breaking out in Europe, but his poor eyesight made him unfit for active duty, so he wrote on. There was to be another world war in his lifetime, as unexpected to him as the first, and after than he settled again in America, dying in 1975 on Long Island in his nineties. So New York was as much home to him as anywhere, though you sometimes wonder if anywhere was. He casually inhabited the whole world. Born in Guildford in 1881, his first infant years had been in Hong Kong, where his father was a magistrate, and his middle years, after New York and Hollywood, were spent in France. Like many EnglishmenSAMPLE down the centuries he had the carefree talent of being mostly somewhere else and yet never losing sense of who he was. -

The Criticism of Cyril Connolly
1 On not Getting on with it: The Criticism of Cyril Connolly I When Cyril Connolly’s Enemies of Promise was published in 1938, W. H. Auden sent its author an admiring letter: As both Eliot and Edmund Wilson are Americans, I think Enemies of Promise is the best English book of criticism since the war, and more than Eliot or Wilson you really write about writing in the only way which is interesting to anyone except academics, as a real occupation like banking or fucking, with all its attendant boredom, excitement, and terror. The word that catches the eye here is, of course, ‘banking’. It is typical of Auden’s off-hand daringness to suggest that the experience of writing might in some way measure up to the ‘excitement and terror’ of banking. Connolly no doubt appreciated both the compliment and the collusion, the acknowl- edgement from a fellow-writer that he had accurately characterized the ‘real occupation’ that they shared. In fact, Auden’s comment had a wider applica- tion to Connolly’s career as a whole, for what, above all, Connolly did was to ‘ w r ite ab out w r it i ng ’. T h at i s , he w rote ab out t he litera r y li fe a s much a s ab out literature; he wrote, with an empathy fed by constantly renewedexperience, about the activity of writing, and, famously, about the much more common activity of not writing, the source of so much of the boredom and the terror. Perhaps no other author has written so much or so well about not writing. -
