Earthsong Frank Ticheli Frank Ticheli, an American composer, residing in Los Angeles California, known for his orchestral, choral, chamber and concert band works. He is also a Professor of Composition at the University of Southern California Earthsong is one of the very few works that was composed without a commission. It was composed out of Ticheli’s personal needs and longing for peace during the war in Iraq. Ticheli felt he had to write the poem himself because it was not just a poem but a prayer, a plea or wish to seek inner peace in a world tinted by war and hatred. The poem is a declaration of the power of music to heal. Ticheli also adapted the wind ensemble edition of the Earthsong from his choral setting. Come To The Woods Jake Runestad Jake Runestad, a Minneapolis, Minnesota based American composer known more for his opera, orchestral music, choral music and wind ensemble albeit he composed for a wide variety of musical genres and ensembles. Come to the Woods for SATB and piano with text by John Muir was commissioned by Craig Hella Johnson and Conspirare. It was premiered at St. Martin’s Lutheran Church, Austin, Texas on May 9, 2015. Come to the Woods explores Muir’s inspirations from the whispering of the wind, power of a storm, the light, the clouds and all his encounters while exploring the outdoors. Carl Crossin OAM is a graduate of both the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and the University of Adelaide and is widely respected as one of Australia’s leading choral conductors. Carl is also the Artistic Director and Conductor of the multi-award winning Adelaide Chamber Singers – an ensemble he founded in 1985 – and was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2007 for his services to music. Elder Conservatorium Chorale Formed by Carl Crossin in 2002 as part of a restructure of the Conservatorium’s choral program, the Elder Conservatorium Chorale draws its membership from the Elder Conservatorium of Music, the University of Adelaide at large, other universities, and from the wider community. The Chorale gives a variety of performances on campus each year Natural Music including the annual Carols on Campus held in Bonython Hall in December. The Chorale has Elder Conservatorium Chorale also combined with other Adelaide choirs to perform with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. These collaborations have included performances of Beethoven’s Symphony No 9, Brahms’ Carl Crossin Conductor Karl Geiger Accompanist German Requiem, Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, Verdi’s Requiem, Mahler’s 2nd, 3rd and 8th Symphonies and the ‘live’ performance of several film scores including the films of Tim Bella Voce Burton, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Dr. Who and two of the Harry Carl Crossin Conductor Potter films. Chorale has also taken part in several ‘Proms’ style performances with the ASO Andrew Georg Accompanist as well as the world premiere in 2015 of Ian Grandage’s ANZAC memorial work Towards First Light. Friday 23 October, 1:10pm vv PROGRAM Northern Lights has five world premiere recordings with three pieces that were either commissioned, composed or dedicated to the Phoenix Chorale. According to the composer, it Elder Conservatorium Chorale is a piece that captured the essence of the aurora borealis. It was composed in an attic outside of Oslo around Christmas time in 2007. Gjeilo was inspired by Christmas in Oslo; Where Sails Once Flew / Desert Sea Luke Byrne overlooking a wintery lake under the stars from his attic and how such a scenery was reflected in the northern lights which he felt was the most beautiful natural phenomena. Bella Voce Shenandoah Traditional American Shenandoah Trad. American arr. Mary Goetze & Carl Crossin As with any folk songs, there are numerous variations and versions of “Shenandoah” and thus it is quite challenging to determine the origin of the song. According to American Katelyn Crawford – Conductor folklorist Alan Lomax, the song was probably a sea-shanty sung by French-Canadian voyageurs while they paddled their canoes along the Mississippi River in the quest for furs. She Weeps Over Rahoon Eric Whitacre However, some believe that the song is of African-American origin as it tells the story of Sally Charles Klein – Cor Anglais who was the daughter of an Indian Chief Shenandoah who was courted for seven years by a white Missouri river trader. Nonetheless, most musicologists seem to agree that the chief supported the English against the French during the seven years French and Indian war as Prayer Of The Children Kurt Bestor he forbade the love between his daughter and the French trader. arr. Andrea Klouse Laura Mohan-Ram – Conductor She Weeps Over Rahoon Eric Whitacre Elder Conservatorium Chorale Eric Whitacre, an American composer, conductor and speaker who is known for his choral, orchestral and wind ensemble music. He was appointed as Los Angeles master Chorale’s Northern Lights Ola Gjeilo first artist-in-residence at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in March 2016. She Weeps Over Rahoon was commissioned by Dr Jocelyn Kaye Jensen and was Come To The Woods Jake Runestad dedicated to Dr Jensen and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Women’s Chorus in 1993. It is one of Whitacre’s earliest choral compositions written for treble voices with the accompaniment of English horn. The piece was not even completed on the day it was Where Sails Once Flew / Desert Sea Luke Byrne premiered. Whitacre had been accompanying the rehearsals and tried different piano part each time. However, at the premiere of this work, he decided to end the piece with a big Luke Byrne, a Sydney-based composer with recent commissioned works which include piano improvisation. Whitacre later went back to listen to the recording of the performance to Capricorn and Desert Sea for Sydney Philharmonia, Storm Bird, Buruwan Elegy and Birinyi transcribe some of his playing. for Gondwana Indigenous Children's Choir with the Australian Chamber Orchestra and Where Sails Once Flew for Adelaide Chamber Singers. Where Sails Once Flew, was premiered by Adelaide Chamber Singers in August 2018 at Prayer of the Children was composed out of frustration over the civil war and ethnic the Pilgrim Church conducted by Christie Anderson. The piece was commissioned by cleansing that took place in the former Yugoslavia. Kurt lived in Yugoslavia for 2 years where Adelaide Chamber Singers Supporters Fund. he was there on religious mission. He observed the social problems such as poverty and war which later inspired him to composed Prayer of the Children. Kurt had always loved the Northern Lights Ola Gjeilo people whom he lived with while on his religious mission. Kurt took a long night to finish the song and sang it to his wife and family. He never intended it to be published. He sang it Ola Gjeilo, a Norwegian composer who migrated to the United States when he was 23 publicly one night when he struggled to fill a two-hour concert. The concert took place in where he started his composition studies at the Julliard School of Music. He is currently Abravanel Hall at a private concert for Folio Corporation in 1994 and received immediate residing in Manhattan where he works as a composer and pianist.
