HOW BLACK IS BLACK METAL [JOURNALISMUS] Nachrichten Von Heute
HOW BLACK IS BLACK METAL [JOURNALISMUS] nachrichten von heute Kevin Coogan - Lords of Chaos (LOC), a recent book-length examination of the “Satanic” black metal music scene, is less concerned with sound than fury. Authors Michael Moynihan and Didrik Sederlind zero in on Norway, where a tiny clique of black metal musicians torched some churches in 1992. The church burners’ own place of worship was a small Oslo record store called Helvete (Hell). Helvete was run by the godfather of Norwegian black metal, 0ystein Aarseth (“Euronymous”, or “Prince of Death”), who first brought black metal to Norway with his group Mayhem and his Deathlike Silence record label. One early member of the movement, “Frost” from the band Satyricon, recalled his first visit to Helvete: I felt like this was the place I had always dreamed about being in. It was a kick in the back. The black painted walls, the bizarre fitted out with inverted crosses, weapons, candelabra etc. And then just the downright evil atmosphere...it was just perfect. Frost was also impressed at how talented Euronymous was in “bringing forth the evil in people – and bringing the right people together” and then dominating them. “With a scene ruled by the firm hand of Euronymous,” Frost reminisced, “one could not avoid a certain herd-mentality. There were strict codes for what was accept- ed.” Euronymous may have honed his dictatorial skills while a member of Red Ungdom (Red Youth), the youth wing of the Marxist/Leninist Communist Workers Party, a Stalinist/Maoist outfit that idolized Pol Pot. All who wanted to be part of black metal’s inner core “had to please the leader in one way or the other.” Yet to Frost, Euronymous’s control over the scene was precisely “what made it so special and obscure, creating a center of dark, evil energies and inspiration.” Lords of Chaos, however, is far less interested in Euronymous than in the man who killed him, Varg Vikemes from the one-man group Burzum. -

When Fields of the Nephilim entered the public consciousness on dusty spurred heels with Dawnrazor in 1987, England's most popular sonic exports included George Michael's solo debut and the album that gave us the rickroll. Slick production and slicker hair seemed unavoidable. Spiritually Uncontrolled Art
Spiritually uncon trolled art: Exploring aesthetics of evil in contemporary music Robert Andersson 2011 Uppsats, magisternivå , 15 hp Religionsvetenskap Människa, natur och religionsprogrammet Handledare: Juan Carlos Gumucio Examinator: Peder Thalén Abstract This essay investigates interpretations of evil as expressed in contemporary music, focusing mainly on lyrics in contemporary popular music. The purpose is to analyze whether there is a certain aesthetic embracing of risk and innovation on display when discussing such subject matters, and to relate such aesthetic connotations to cultural and religious aspects. Lyrical interpretations of evil in a musical context appear to be existent in different forms and are in various ways attempts to integrate the existence of evil acts, as leading to suffering and pain, by incorporating such themes into lyrical material. There appears to be a possible aesthetic embraced when artists are advocating evil acts, however, not totally separable from the aesthetics of the extreme metal scene. Such forms of creative practice appear as reliant on the dialectic between historical perceptions of morality, modern society as globalized, segmented and restructured and the reoccurrence of religion in a secularized perspective. Themes regarding evil appear in this form of aesthetic in different ways to traditional discourse; making use of historical and contemporary images of evil and portraying them as desirable in various ways. In some instances such creative release is also linked to religious belief and practice, making the artistic performance equivalent of a transcendental event. Keywords Aesthetics, contemporary music, culture, extreme metal, evil, modernism, music lyrics. 2 Table of contents Abstract ...................................................................................................................................... 2 Table of contents........................................................................................................................ 3 1. -

Violence Against the Self in Depressive Suicidal Black Metal Owen Coggins
Article Owen Coggins Distortion, restriction and instability Distortion, restriction and instability: Violence against the self in depressive suicidal black metal Owen Coggins The Open University Owen Coggins researches violence, ambiguity and mysticism in popular music, particularly in relation to extreme music and noise. His monograph, Mysticism, Ritual and Religion in Drone Metal was published by Bloomsbury Academic in 2018, and, in addition to contributing several articles to Metal Music Studies his work has appeared in Popular Music, Implicit Religion, and Diskus: Journal of the British Association for the Study of Religion amongst others. He also runs Oaken Palace Records, a registered charity raising money for endangered species through releasing drone records. He is Honorary Associate of the Religious Studies Department at the Open University. Contact: Religious Studies Department, The Open University, Walton Hall, Milton Keynes MK7 6AA, UK. E-mail: [email protected] https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8322-1583 Abstract In the underground subgenre of depressive suicidal black metal (DSBM), extremes of violence against the self are presented in combination with a restrictive version of black metal. Album covers feature explicit photographs of self-cutting or drawings of suicide by hanging; vocals are tortured screams expressing extreme suffering, and guitar sounds are so distorted that they begin to approach an ambient atmospheric blur. Given the history of concern about metal and its health implications, I investigate DSBM as a case in which representation of harm in music is overt, explicit and extreme, yet the health impact of the music is undetermined. I discuss how different modalities of distortion and restriction may connect the sound of DSBM to themes of violence against the self, presenting a theoretical framework for approaching DSBM as music which negotiates a complex economy of the staging and control of violence with respect to the self. -

Méi-Ra St-Laurent: "It’s kind of in the middle": The ‘Mid-Fi’ Aesthetic: Toward a New Designation of Black Metal Aesthetic of Recording. The Case of the Québec Black Metal Scene Abstract The designation of the black metal sound as “lo-fi” by academics is problem- atic, since it doesn’t reflect the contemporary black metal production. Field- work in the Québec scene show that the members designate their sound as being “in the middle” – or mid-fi as I advocate it. In this paper, I first define “hi-fi”, “lo-fi”, “authenticity” and “mid-fi” in the context of black metal. Then, I present different black metal sound aesthetic using audio extracts, frequency analysis, spectrogram images and ethnographic data. This analysis allow better qualify black metal aesthetic production today using the Québec scene as an example. Introduction Between April 2015 and December 2017, I conducted nineteen ethnographic interviews with twenty-five members of the black metal scene in the prov- ince of Québec (Canada) as a part of my doctoral thesis in musicology1. -
6.2. Black Metal: History, Trace of Character and Archetype 215
6.2. Black Metal: history, trace of character and archetype 215 6.2. Black Metal: history, trace of character and archetype José Filipe P. M. Silva 2 Abstract In this communication it is intended to realize an historical analysis on the nature of “Black metal”, considered as the most extreme subgenre and subculture of heavy metal music, and, simultaneously, to discuss its philosophical and psychoanalytical interpretations, namely through the concepts of “emotion”, “trace of character” and “archetype”. I will demonstrate that this musical style constitutes a perfect example of the psychological semi-primeval mental figure of the “Horrible Father”, a mitigation and degeneration of the symbolic fertility of the “Great Mother” (which is represented among every culture since pre-historical times). For such, the study will be framed in four fundamental authors (Erich Neumann, Malcolm Budd, Sigmund Freud and Carl Gustav Jung), orientated by three thematic moments (nature and significance of the “Great Mother” and the “Horrible Father”; Black metal anti-Christian founding ideology and the actions perpetuated in the name of the “scene”; philosophical perspectives on beauty and psychoanalytical interpretations) and having as plumb-line the major nihilistic and anti-Christian statements of the late nineteenth century philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, which are usually quoted ad hoc in black metal songs. Keywords: archetype, beauty, black metal, horrible father, trace of character. Roots of darkness Black metal is probably the most extreme and controversial subgenre and subculture of the musical universe. Ever since its beginning in the early 1980s with bands such as Venom, Mercyful Fate, Bathory, Hellhammer or Celtic Frost – and especially after its rebirth in the early nineties, with the Scandinavians Mayhem, Burzum, Darkthrone, Immortal, Gorgoroth, Marduk or Dark Funeral – Black Metal has proven itself to be the most consistently though- provoking, aggressive, depressive, misanthropic, obscure and essentially misunderstood of all the many offshoots of heavy metal.
