1 BiOGRAPHY A pestilent air rises from the underground, as it should. For however much black metal conti- nues to be co-opted, commercialized, and crassly made into a (marketable) parody of itself, there exist true aesthetic terrorists with such fanatic ideology and frightening vision to keep the genre “grounded” – in the dirt, in the grime, of the soul... MERRIMACK is one such band. Having made a cult name for themselves with 2002’s Ashes of Purification debut album, their jet-black hateful chunk of metal was acclaimed by the strict core of the underground scene and the American label Moribund Records began to put out feelers in direction of Paris. Those first fruits of evil ? MERRIMACK’s “Of Entropy and Life Denial” and “Grey Rigorism”, real black metal records made with real ideology and vision that show this French fivesome flexing muscles of creativity and depravity precious few can fathom, a mesmerizing miasma that’s elusively professionalism in an underground grown too lazy. This combination of gruff Black Metal with epic song structures and post-modern sound got fa- bulous media critics, and the band was offered to do a 1 month tour in USA with MARDUK and NACHTMYSTIUM, which turned out to be very successful. In summer 2011 the band came to an agreement about a co-operation with the German Metal la- bel AFM Records.As a result, the combo enters again the boomy ‘n’ roomy caverns of Necromorbus Studio (where quality guarantees like WATAIN or FUNERAL MIST produced their sound attacks) in March 2012, followed two years later by a european tour with legendary MAYHEM. Founded in 1994, MERRIMACK belongs to the most influential, most active and authentic bands of the French black metal scene. Their latest album, “The Acausal Mass” bites, rages, hurts and destroys. MERRIMACK excelled themselves by introducing a milestone of orthodox and brilliant black metal, balancing malicious underground spirit and wickedly simmered maturity.     A STERILE HOLE AND A MASK OF FECES Bert Stabler Gnaw Their Tongues’ album title An Epiphanic Vomiting of Blood1 is a concise ex- ample of black metal’s theme of ecstatic disintegration made tangible in violent outward expression—a slaughterhouse revelation, exposing what was hidden. This purging recalls both the self-emptying (kenosis) of Gospel theology and G.W.F. Hegel’s telos of self-overcoming (“sublation,” or “Aufhebung”), inverting the dead- lock, turning oneself inside-out and thereby becoming transparent, masoch- istically abandoning oneself to the environment, incorporating it and being incor- porated by it. Gilles Deleuze says the masochist does not derive most of his pleasure from pain; rather, his “real pleasure is obtained subsequently, in that which is made possible by the punishment.”2 This suspended gratification evokes the self-transcending “surplus-enjoyment” represented in the Resurrection, follow- ing the self-annihilating degradation in the Incarnation and the Passion. This is the sacrifice that believers are to mirror in order to receive the blessing of divine grace, as set forth by theologians from Paul to St. John of the Cross to St. Ignatius Loyola to Kierkegaard. In black metal, this rebirth for which “creation groans” fol- lows many revivals, from the Renaissance through Romanticism, in its nostalgia for a golden age of occult magic. It appears in lyrics as the return of a latent pagan- barbarian consciousness; Satyricon screams, “In this land where the forest is my throne / I have come to re-hunt,”3 and Katharsis shrieks: “The sleeper will wake and the world will bleed.”4 The self-cannibalizing and subsequent self-expulsion of these linked zeitgeists is not unlike that associated with trauma.

More recently, studies have neglected content analysis due to perceived homogeneity in themes, despite evidence that the modern genre is distinct from its past. As lyrical patterns are strong markers of genre, this study attempts to characterize heavy metal in the 21st century by analyzing lyrics for specific themes and perspectives. Citing evidence that the “Millennial” generation confers significant developments to popular culture, the contemporary genre is termed “Millennial heavy metal” throughout, and the study is framed accordingly.

    BEHEXEN TO INFERNO FESTIVAL 2013 There will be Finnish ritual black metal when cult legends BEHEXEN enter the stage at Rockefeller during INFERNO METAL FESTIVAL 2013. Their newest effort, called “Nightside Emanations”, proves that the band is one of the most interesting bands coming from Finland and it might also be one of the best releases this year within the genre. Earlier announced artists are SATYRICON, TAAKE, SOLEFALD, PURIFIED IN BLOOD, AETURNUS, DISKORD and IN VAIN. BEHEXEN Finnish BEHEXEN has over the years built up a huge cult following of fans. The music is brutal, yet thick with atmosphere and satanic darkness. From the very start in 1994, under the name Lords of the Left Hand, they released several demos before the debut album in 2000 called “Rituale Satanum”. This year they have released one of the best black metal albums of 2012 called “Nightside Emanations”, which elevates them to one of the leading acts in Finland's black metal scene. No wonder when the members of BEHEXEN hails from other great bands such as Horna, Sargeist, One tail, One Head and Mare – to mention a few. Il s'agit de mon album favori d'Enslaved suivi de près par "Eld", on ressent une envie et une virulence incroyables dans cette oeuvre. Enslaved pratique un black metal rageur et inspiré, globalement plus violent et ténébreux que sur "Eld". Il n'y a rien à jeter sur cet album, aucune piste de remplissage. On commence après une intro aux claviers avec un "Loke" ravageur et un "Fenris" magnifique avec son riff à la Satyricon et son break ultra mélodique. Enslaved impose sa patte dès 1994, avec la très bonne performance de Trym Torson à la batterie sur cet album, qui s'en ira rejoindre Emperor par la suite. "Svarte vidder" est un grand morceau doté d'une intro symphonique, le développement est excellent, 9 minutes de bonheur musical et auditif. "Yggdrasill" se pose en interlude de ce disque, un titre calme avec voix grave, guimbarde, choeurs et l'utilisation d'une basse fretless jouée par Eirik "Pytten", le producteur de l'album: un intemrède magnifique et judicieux car l'album gagne en aération. Le disque enchaîne sur un "Jotu249lod" destructeur et un Gylfaginning" accrocheur.
