Players meet on Monday nights and either play matches or practise. We also have a ladies darts team who play on Monday nights. The skittle season is now finished and the Social Club's team, who are in division 3, have finally finished up mid table this year despite a poor start to the season. The Beehive cricket team, who are based at the club, have seen a pleasant change of form in recent weeks with the 1st eleven winning 3 games in a row and the 2nd eleven winning 2 games in successive weeks. The 1st eleven victories were against Swindon A with N Harber scoring 82 and D Thomas taking 4 for 21 in an 86 run win. Then they beat Swindon Nalgo by 1 wicket with C Warren 60 and G Collins 5 for 15, setting up J Dennison and P Stockley to score a 16 run last wicket partnership to scrape home, and finally beating Bradford on Avon by 27 runs with M Sponge 43 and P Andrews 3 for 27. The 2nd eleven victories were both at home against Lacock, winning by 18 runs with G Lapham 42 and I Mahany 3 for 27 and a 63 run win over Corsham CC 4th eleven with M Reeves 63 and S Taylor 3 for 9. Coming up in the near future is a 'Race Night' in the village hall on 18th August at £10 a ticket and the 'Presidents' annual match on the 9th September followed by an evening of live music. The crib team have had a roller coaster start to the season while trying to emulate last seasons runaway success. Howev- er, they have now recovered and are currently lying second in the league and are in one final towards the end of July If anyone is interested in joining any of the teams you can get further information in the Club. Don’t forget we now have a 'Table Football' game which is still proving very popular with the younger element at only 10p a go! The Club has run various events this year, including excellent quiz nights which are now being held on the second Sunday of each month. All our functions can be found on the Club web site. So, if anyone is interested in joining the Club with its friendly, relaxed atmosphere and excellent value (families welcome), then either pop into the Club or contact any of the committee members, phone the above number on any evening or email us. The popular Wiltshire Big Wheel cycling event is taking place on Sunday 17 September. It raises funds for Wilt- shire Air Ambulance and has a choice of routes to suit cyclists of all abilities. It’s a must for anyone who loves cycling and our Charity Ambassador and Champion Para-cyclist Lauren Booth is taking part again after she completed the 45 mile route last year. The event starts and finishes at The Green in Devizes and depending on which route you opt for you’ll enjoy some of the most scenic (and challenging) landscapes our county has to offer. From a gentle 12 mile through the Vale of Pewsey (perfect for families) to a 45 mile route through Pewsey and Marlborough to a demanding 100 miles taking in the Wylye Valley and Salisbury.

SOUTHWICK ENTERTAINERS

Southwick Entertainers performed their Summer offering on the 14th and 15th July; Dangerous Dolls, a comedy musical play with a ploughman's supper. It was a light hearted play interspersed with popular toe tapping tunes such as Barbie Girl and Puppet on a String. Musical accompaniment was provided by Paul Hamel on piano and Matt Figini on drums. The show was well attended and the group received many positive comments afterwards, particularly regarding the prowess of the younger members, who all had a line or two and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Look out for the group's pantomime, Sleeping Beauty, which will be performed at the end of January 2018.

Villagers will have been saddened to hear of the recent deaths of Pauline Frazer of Wesley Close and Betty Pinchin of Three Pieces, Hoggington Lane. Pauline Frazer. Pauline died in June having lived in Southwick for 48 years being one of the first residents of Wesley Close. Originally from Dorset and attending Swanage Grammar School, Pauline started work for the Atom- ic Energy Establishment at Winfrith, before moving to Bradford on Avon where she worked for the Avon Rubber Company. After marrying Harry and moving to Southwick, Pauline became involved in the Play Group, many of you will remember her as the supervisor. She was also an active member of St Thomas Church delivering the magazines for many years and a founder member of the church coffee mornings. She attended the Friendship club and was involved in many activities in the village and surrounding area. Pauline’s funeral at the Crematorium was well attended, a wonderful tribute to a loving mother and member of Southwick community. The retirement collection was shared between The Children’s Society and The Stroke Association.

Condolences are expressed to the family and friends of Pauline and Betty & also to those of any others of whom we are not aware.

Please let me know if there are any announcements that you may like me to include in future “Village News”, such as births, engagements, christenings, forthcoming weddings, anniversaries, in memorium, etc. As long as they are for private individuals, they will be no charge. I will try to include any notices, but please be aware that this is a bi-monthly magazine, so make sure you give me plenty of warning. Thanks, The Editor

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

Welcome to the August edition of the Neighbourhood News. It would appear that this month I am struggling to find anything to say, as there has been nothing of any note happening within the area. Most things that have occurred have been minor RTCs or domestic incidents. I am going to make an effort in September to recruit more co-ordinators with an aim of covering the whole village. Over the years that I have been running this organisation various members have stopped being co-ordinators due to ill health and age. With modern technology it has become easier to communicate and message information. With this in mind all I am asking is that you contact me and obtain a form to collate information for my records. You will then have to contact 10 to 15 neighbours and put on the form their name, address, telephone number and e.mail address. I hold one copy and you as co-ordinator a copy. If possible you then set up a contact list of these addresses. The idea then is that there is a two way passage of information. If something is suspicious within your area your neighbour’s pass details to you and you forward it to me if you think it warrants it. Likewise if I have any information from the Police with regards crime trends in the village I forward it to you and you pass it out to your neighbours. The only other thing that I ask is that you attend one of our meetings. We hold about three a year mostly on a Thursday at 1900hr for one hour and the Police usually attend. The two lists of members are not disclosed to anyone else and are held purely for our records should we require a landline or mobile number to contact any of the members. This is not a club for retired people and it would be nice to get some younger members joining. You all live in the village and are part of the community; you know what is usual and what would seem out of place in your area. It is the responsibility for us all to look out for one and other, so please consider whether you could spare a small amount of your time in helping the community as a whole. If the answer is yes then please let me know and I can come and meet you to discuss your area and fill in the required paperwork. After an initial form filling then there is very little to do unless there is a problem in your immediate vicinity. Due to financial cuts the Police are struggling, as we all can see, so it is now becoming more important for us as civilians to be their eyes and ears in our local area. We know what is normal or who should be here and should recognise when something is out of place or a stranger is in your vicinity. I will leave it there for this edition. Anyone wishing to contact me with a NHW problem can do so on, 763314 or [email protected] if not available then I will get back to you as soon as I can. If it is serious and requires police attendance then don’t hesitate to phone the Police numbers 999 or 112 for anything life threatening or you feel requires immediate attention or 101 for everything else and to contact the local Com- munity Policing Team. If you have information or concerns about a crime or problem in your area, ie drug dealing, and wish to remain anonymous , then phone Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111

Neighbourhood Plan - Steering Group:

‘Neighbourhood planning is an incredibly important new right and one that provides a real opportunity for peo- ple to bring about the homes, shops and facilities they want to see to make their community thrive’. Nick Boles 8th March 2013.

A fundamental principle of neighbourhood planning is that it is community led.

In this respect, Southwick Parish Council (SPC) held an Extraordinary Parish Council meeting on Thursday 13th July, where a resolution was passed to progress with delivering a Neighbourhood Plan as quickly as possible.

I have been asked to lead the project and my first task is to establish a Steering Group.

The Steering Group will consist of members of the Parish Council, local residents, community groups and key stakeholders such as schools and religious organisations.

Three Members of the Parish Council, including myself, have already come forward to help build the Neighbour- hood Plan and to form the basis of the Steering Group.

We are now offering the opportunity of joining the Steering Group to the wider Southwick community.

This is an opportunity for individuals to help with scoping (i.e. identify the key issues of concern) and delivering the plan as it progresses over the next 12-24 months.

SPC are currently in the process of receiving tenders and presentations from professional consultants, employed to help with the more technical aspects of the Neighbourhood Plan.

What we now need to do as a community is to undertake all the research, fact finding and collation of infor- mation required to support a strong Neighbourhood Plan.

So, if you are interested in volunteering to help shape the future design of Southwick and in becoming a mem- ber of the Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group, then please contact the Parish Council Clerk ([email protected]) to register your interest in the first instance.

As I said earlier, we are looking to progress with the Plan as quickly as possible and in this respect we are looking to have all Steering Group Members in place by the end Aug. 2017.

This timeline coincides nicely with our first Neighbourhood Planning Event, a stall at this years Village Flower Show.

Many thanks for reading.

Parish Cllr John Eaton.

1st Southwick Guides

The guides have enjoyed a variety of outdoor events this term including making ice cream and a Race for Life in the Southwick Country Park. The 5km run or walk was raising money for Cancer Research on a very hot evening. We entered teams in the County Archery and Shooting competitions, with many guides trying these activities for the first time. The guides have been busy learning new skills for their summer camp which this year will be at in the New Forest. The guides enjoyed a trip to Airhop in Bristol and on the trampolines Alice, Amelia, Cassie, Charlotte, Olivia and Ruby made their guide promise.

Sparky (R Cadby) Guide Leader

1st Southwick

At the beginning of this terms Violet made her promise. During the evening we completed a craft which was very messy! Also we have been making the most of the sunny weather where we have been to the country park and played lots of games which the girls really enjoyed. During the term we went to Bradford on Avon where the girls had fun playing on the play area and we had chips which were yummy! 5 came to visit for an evening before they start in September.

Everyone enjoyed the Brownie day and we went bowling in Melksham which was very competitive!

For our last meeting of the term we had a 'festival' and during the evening we said goodbye to our older Brownies who are joining Guides in September.

Brown Owl, Snowy Owl and Moonlight Owl

1st Southwick Rainbows The Rainbows have a had a great end to the term with lots of exciting events as part of our 30th Birthday challenge badge. One evening we invited our grown-ups to join us & help us make sock puppets, we then had tea & cake and performed some songs we had learnt for the occasion.

On June 14th we took on a Race for Life at Southwick Playing Field. The girls completed around 2km with some running more, they were joined by some of their mums. In total we managed to raise £481 for Cancer Research.

We’ve also enjoyed a scavenger hunt and for our final meeting we had a wonderful barge trip on the canal.

We said goodbye to Ella, Isla, Millie, Summer and Khamsin who were presented with their ‘pots of gold’ on the barge. We wish them all the best and hope they enjoy their time at Brownies.

Southwick School

Another year comes to a close and this term has been very busy. We began the term with a very successful sports day and it was great to see so many parents staying afterwards for a picnic lunch. The children in Wren and Kingfisher classes had a super time on their Teddy Bear Picnic to Southwick Country Park. As a special treat, the children from Wren to Jay Class, went inside the Exploratory Dome and looked at habitats and land- scapes in different parts of the world. The Y4 children had an adventure day at Brokerswood and the Y5 children visited At Bristol where they were treated to a 3D journey through space, as well as trying lots of hands on activities. They also had a visit from a scientist , who brought in a space suit from the ISS and demonstrated how rocket engines work; the children learned how to investigate whether there is life on Mars. The Y6 leavers have worked hard on their end of term produc- tion“ Robin of Sherwood” and they were supported by the Y5 children. As well as saying farewell at our Y6 pupils, we also say goodbye to other children who are moving away from the area, some to a different country, and we wish them well as new adventures begin.. Mr Fowers, who has been at the school for four years as a TA is also moving on to try new things and I am retiring after thirty nine year at Southwick. On a personal note I would like to say thank you to past pupils who have given me special memories to treasure. Paula Bartlett

Don’t forget that we are fortunate in Southwick to have two defibrillators in the village, one at The Farmhouse Inn on Frome Road and the other at the corner of The Village Hall. Both of them are available for the general public to use in the case of an emergency, if someone goes into cardiac arrest and are not responding, these machines can increase their chance of surviving. Training has been given to various volunteers in the village, but if you haven’t had any formal training, don’t be afraid to use the technology. The machine is very easy to use, it is not to be a thing to be frightened of. I have had the training and can honestly say that I wouldn’t hesitate to use it in an emergency. It is an intelligent piece if kit that won’t do any harm to a person if you attempt to do so. It can tell if a person needs “shocking” or not and will not deliver the shock if it isn’t necessary. If you do find yourself in the situation where you encounter a person that is unconscious and not breathing, please get someone to dial 999 first before you attempt to use the machine, get the experts coming first. If you notice that one of the machines is damaged or in need of attention, please contact Kath Noble on 01225 352503.’ I m not an expert and hopefully won’t ever need to use it, but it is reassuring that these machines are available. Friends of Southwick Country Park Summer has arrived in the Park and the meadows have been glorious, so much so that the annual butterfly count held on a scorching hot day in June produced large numbers. The highest count was Meadow Browns at 1209, also Large Skippers, Small Skippers, Comma, Ringlet and Small Tortoiseshell were found.

The grass has been cut ready for school holiday activities and this year we have two events run by the Wilt- shire Countryside Team with help from the Friends. Our first is “Help your garden wildlife” on Wednesday 26th July and the second “Nature trail/treasure hunt” on Wednesday 23rd August both starting at 10.30 a.m. through to 3.00 p.m. These events will run alongside a book/bric-a-brac sales table run by the volunteers to boost fund raising. Our sales table will also be seen at Southwick Flower Show on Bank Holiday Monday. Fundraising has gone really well this year with £2,000.00 given by Tesco’s Bags of Help and £500.00 from Asda. Many thanks to all who contributed their tokens. Over the past two months, Friends and Countryside Team have worked hard at protecting the wonderful an- cient and veteran oak trees. A method of protection called halo-ing has been used to clear and form a circle around the base of the trunk creating a “halo”. By clearing all the undergrowth, the trees have more light and space. They are more visible to visitors to the Park and can be more appreciated. Other work has included clearing overgrown pathways and tidying the area by the allotments including the orchard. As always the Friends welcome any volunteers to come along on bi-monthly meetings held on the second Wednesday and last Tuesday of the month. Meet in the main carpark at 9.30 a.m.

SOUTHWICK SHORT MAT BOWLS CLUB It is eighteen years since we started playing bowls in Southwick, in those days we played three times a week, now we only play on Tuesday afternoons at 2pm. I would like to hear from anyone who would be interested in playing on a Friday evening, age is no barrier and anyone can play. If you are interested, please give me, Kath Noble a call on 01225 352503.

Park Run

" It's been another 2 months of fun, good deeds and hard work at the parkrun on Saturday mornings, here in Southwick.

After the success of the initial pilot, the "Run/walk initiative" has been- re introduced. If you are one of those people who fancies the idea of running but has no idea where to begin then this is definitely for you. The group begins at the back of the main running pack and walks for 1 minute followed by running for one minute and so on until the running becomes more and the walking less until by the end of 12 weeks you can run the 2 and 3/4 laps or 5K in it's entire- ty.

It was embraced so positively by new people that not only is it being repeated at Southwick but parkrun UK is excited by the idea and looking into it as an idea for other parkruns . Thanks to Race Director Fiona Price, Southwick is leading the way in making exercise as accessible as possible to people.

The average attendance currently is 291 but it's certainly not unusual to get in excess of 320 and the average number of volunteers is 29 but we can always do with more so if running isn't your thing but smiling and being helpful is then please get in touch. This event simply wouldn't happen were it not for people generously giving up their time each week to make this happen.

The King and Queen of parkrun are the oh so familiar faces of Matt Evans and Gill Perry. Both these guys run their 250th parkrun on August 5th and are tremendous sports. Clearly Southwick is their favourite place to be on a Saturday!!

A special mention also needs to go to our resident photographer, Martin Pearce, who kindly takes hundreds of pictures every week for us all to enjoy. Martin has been working tirelessly in between this and his day job to raise money for The Children's Hospice South West dressed as "Shoeperman" a costume straight out of the children's imagination. Martin organised a colour- ing competition and the winning design was made into his costume- a giant shoe, not the easiest thing to run in!! The charity is very close to his heart and I'm sure we'll hear more about it in the months that follow

He has run 6 races including the London Marathon and Bath Half marathon and has another 6 on the cards, one of which is called the Bromham Pudding Run (sounds like my kind of race). He also plans to complete a 203 mile cycle ride between hospices. Martin has raised just short of £5300 inc gift aid and has another £350 promised. We wish Martin every success in his endeavours. To honour this we are holding a "Shoepowers parkrun" on 22nd July- bring your super hero capes!

Thanks to all the runners and local people who voted for Squirrels Tearooms to be de- serving of a grant. Tom James is a trustee of the café/charity and always welcomes parkrunners afterward for a cuppa or some well deserved breakfast.

Lastly we have welcomed many parkrun tourists over the past few weeks. Folk have joined us from as far as Queensland Australia, Durham, Lincolnshire and North Wales. We look forward to seeing more tourists and lo- cals alike in the months to follow"

In aid of Guide Dog – Max

Once again another BIG THANK YOU to you all. Thanks to everyone who attended or contributed in any way to my

‘Pre- Wimbledon Cream Tea’.

in aid of Guide Dog ‘Max’.

A very enjoyable time was had by all who attended (and the rain held off in the end) but most importantly the final total raised in three hours was: £400.00

Once again this was quite honestly a tremendous amount to raise in such a short time and I couldn’t have done it without the help and support that I received from all my friends and neighbours and those who attended the event. Thanks to everyone who donated all the Raffle and Tombola prizes and cakes etc: Your continued sup- port for my fund-raising events is much appreciated and it is with great pleasure that I can tell you that the running total for Max, my fourth guide dog, (raised in just 7 months), is a tremendous

£3084.00 (only £1,916 to go to reach the £5,000 target)

I will never be able to thank you all enough for helping me to give a blind person their life back

With Love from Linda xx

A Sponsored ‘Skydive/Parachute jump Everyone knows someone who has passed away or is fighting cancer. I have four dear friends who are still fighting and the Bath Cancer Unit is doing all it can to keep these friends alive. The only way I can say‘ Thank you’ to the unit for keeping my friends going is to raise some money to help them continue the fantastic work that they are continuing to do in striving to give all cancer patients longer with their families.

To this end I will be taking part in a ‘Skydive/parachute jump’ from 15,000 feet up on Sunday 17th September at Old Sarum near Salisbury.

I would be very grateful for any sponsors for this event. The link to contribute towards this is as follows http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/LindaDowsett

If you would like to help me with this one-off fund-raising event but can’t donate on above link I have sponsor forms at home (60. Hollis Way) and would welcome any donations

Thank you so much – Love Linda xx

The Hope Nature Centre The Hope Nature Centre is a unique charity based on the Frome Rd in Southwick which provides work place- ments for 40 adults with learning difficulties. The adults work both in our tearoom as well as in and around the Animal Park where the focus remains on actively promoting their life skills, building confidence and- self esteem. The Hope Nature Centre provides them the opportunity to move into mainstream employment in the hope that they will be able to live independently. The interaction between them and the general public raises awareness of learning disabilities, breaks down barriers and challenges perceptions of special needs by pro- moting inclusion.

We are always looking for volunteers especially gardeners and a Land Train Driver during School Holidays, or a Pianist for our Choir.

The Animal Park is open 7 days a week and costs just £2.50 for adults and £1.50 for children with a family ticket [2 adults and 2 children] available for just £7. We have a range of animals within our 15 acres like, Pigs, Sheep, Goats, Alpacas, Emus, Chipmunks and many more. You can also feed some of the animals for just 50p a bag! The goats appreciate this the most!!

As the charity is not government funded all money raised is used to sustain the maintenance and upkeep of the facilities. Our Squirrel Tea Rooms are also open 7 days a week 8.30am to 4.30pm. We serve an array of homemade food and cakes including our top rated gluten free breakfast! Other Gluten Free food is available.

Every FRIDAY IS OAP Special Day Amazingly low price of £6.50 For any main meal followed by any dessert.

Please call 01225 759075 if you can help in any way. We look forward to seeing you all soon at Hope Nature Centre, Southwick and Squirrel’s Tearooms. You’re always guaranteed a warm welcome.

Note from the Editor

In the last edition of this newsletter I was asked to publicise the forthcoming “Fathers vs Sons” Annual Charity Cricket Match It was to be “A wonderful nostalgic event for fathers who haven’t played perhaps since their school days. A great amount of fun and mickey taking when a father is bowled by his son, or of course, the other way around. It is a contest be- tween the generations. You don’t necessarily need to be a father/son combination, and if you would like to take part as a single play- er we will slot you into whichever team most suits your age group best. Our game is played as a genuine contest, but it is not really for adult club cricketers, although 12 – 14 year olds who regularly play in a team are most welcome. Since its conception we have raised over £10,000 for various charities, many of which are local. Come and join us for a great day’s fun. You can play all day, morning only or afternoon only. It is entirely up to you. This year’s game should have taken place on a Saturday 8th July.” ———————— Unfortunately, a few days earlier, I received an email from the organiser, it stated:

“I am writing this on the day our event should have taken place. Sadly we did not manage to get enough players to hold the match and have therefore postponed it till later on in the year, probably September. It was also disappointing that our item in the South- wick News letter did not receive one enquiry.”

So, you have a second chance to enter, if you are interested in playing, please contact :

Southwick Baptist Church Graveyard/Baptistry Upkeep

Around five years ago the youth leaders at Southwick Baptist Church, assisted by some of the young people, took on the responsibility of tending part of the church graveyard adjacent to the chapel building as part of their ongoing commitment to raise money to sponsor children in Af- rica. The first two photographs, show part of the graveyard at that time and clearly show it to have been somewhat un- loved and unkempt.

A couple of years later this was extended to cover the whole graveyard. Throughout much of the year the focus is on maintenance (i.e. cutting the grass, strimming around the gravestones, keeping the weeds at bay), with improvement activities being completed through the winter months. These have included surfacing almost all of the- stone framed graves with blue slate, cutting back the bushes within the graveyard and the hedges bound by open fields. Over the most recent winter, we have reclaimed and levelled the lower part of the graveyard, thus extending the space available. The following two photographs show off the graveyard in its improved and tended condition.

From June 2017 we have taken on the additional task of maintaining the grass and edges of the outside baptistry in Wynsome Street and we look forward to the challenge of making this more presentable too. All of the contributions we receive for these works are donated to the fund set up for sponsoring children in Africa.

It was way back in 2012 when we launched Fusion58, a long-term missional initiative to reach out and sponsor children in Africa through the charity Compassion International, as part of the massive global challenge to rid the world of extreme poverty. The money raised provides ongoing sponsorship for two children (a boy, Dirar in Ethiopia and a girl, Agnes in Uganda), as well as topping up the monies given by a number of adults, some from within the church, enabling sponsor- ship of a third child, a Ugandan girl named Joan. Some of you may recall that during our mission trip to Uganda in Octo- ber 2014 we were blessed to be able to visit the homes of Agnes and Joan where we were warmly welcomed by their respective families and spent some time with them. We are also delighted to share that we have just been able to take on the sponsorship of a fourth young lad, Travor, who lives in Kampala, Uganda. The money that is sent every month en- ables these four children, aged between 11 and 14 years, to attend local child development centres which provide schooling, health screening and care, nutritious meals, educational field trips and life skills training. As part of the group’s relationship with these four children we regularly exchange letters with them. If you have any unwanted books, CDs, DVDs or console games, then we would be pleased to take them. Any money we receive for these items is donated to contribute to the sponsorship fund.

Should you have any unwanted items or simply require any further information please feel free to contact us by email at [email protected].

TROWBRIDGE MAJORETTES. First of all, the troupe would like to thank Kath Nobel for the hire and use of the Southwick Village Hall at short notice again, our usual venue at Trowbridge College, unfortunately is often used for other functions so we are not able to practice our routines every week.

So far the spring and summer have been kind to us as the girls have entertained the crowds at several local fetes and carnivals. The weather has been threatening but we managed to dodge the showers and keep dry & relatively warm. The first event of the year was held at the South Wraxall Fete where seven of our girls did a lovely display. The youngest girl was Lily-Mai just 8 years old and did us proud.

The second outing was to our annual event at Bromham where the girls performed in the carnival procession and then did a display on the playing field. Despite the dark rain clouds and wind, they again, did a smashing 20 minute routine to different pieces of music.

Our latest venture was to do a display just down the road at North Bradley, at their annual fete. Due to lack of girls able to attend the display, we only had a disappointing number of girls performing, but they did well and hopefully the crowds enjoyed the display.

We not only do displays & carnivals, but we belong to an association called the Rhythmic, Dance, Twirling As- sociation (RDTA) of which there are other majorette troupes from all over the South West. They come from Canvey Island, Cheltenham, Weymouth, Bristol, Mere, Weston Super Mare among others and all compete at competitions. On Sunday the 16th July, our girls brought home a hoard of trophies, they really did well. We won in the RDTA Championships for 2017, the Seniors won Champions Senior Freestyle Dance Team and Kylie Moore won Senior Basic Strut champion. Kylie also won the judges individual award for the senior age group and Melody Veale-Parsons won the judges award for the pre-teen age group. For a small team of 9 attending, they did extremely well winning 28 awards in total that day. Despite the success this year so far, the number of girls that we have in our troupe has dwindled, we may have quite a few on our books but when it comes to actually committing to an event, it seems that there is always another reason why they can’t attend, most are genuine such as illness, injury, family or work commitments, which I quite honestly understand, but it is frustrating when we practice for months to do a routine and at the last minute, only a few are prepared to commit themselves. So, if you or someone you know would like to join us, boys are just as welcome as girls, please give us a call and come along to see what it is like to be a Trowbridge Majorette. It is fun and we have great times. Although the trainer and leaders have to instil discipline as in any organisation, we run the troupe for enjoyment, for the children and families. We have been going for 40 odd years and don’t intent to finish yet! Later this year we are booked to take part in the processions at Trowbridge Carnival and hopefully Warminster Carnival in October. Please give either Gwenda Noakes a call on 01373 823000 or Marilyn Fox on 01225 762930 if you would like more information, we are staring new routines for the next carnivals in early September.

PS The troupe would like to thank Firefighter Mark Fox and his colleagues at Slough Fire Station (in their own time!) for repairing our generator which provides the power for our music system and lights. John (the dogsbody of the troupe) thought that 30 year old petrol that he had in a jerry can in his garage would be suitable to run the machine, it wasn’t a good idea as it took Mark and his mate hours to diagnose the problem. John didn’t realise that petrol has a shelf life, it turns orange as we eventually found out.
