According to the United Nations, 4 billion people live outside the protection of the law. That means that their public justice systems, police, courts, and laws, are so broken, corrupt and dysfunctional, that there is nothing to shield them from violence. For poor people throughout the developing world, this is everyday life. No defense. No protection. Nothing to hold back violence. Not just the violence that makes the headlines like war or genocide— but common, criminal violence: Slavery, Sex Trafficking, Sexual Violence, Police Brutality, Property Grabbing, Citizens Rights Abuse. We’re inspired every day by the students, parents, leaders and families who have made justice their mission. From students to senators, pastors to police officers– we’re privileged to support, learn from and work alongside people like you to build this movement. Come stand for freedom with the International Justice Mission chapter at CNU! We will be standing in shifts for 24 hours to raise money and awareness to end injustices such as sex trafficking, forced labor, and police brutality. We will have interactive art activities, educational displays, and free food for those who stand with us. Stand For Freedom 2016 is all about doing what you can to help bring rescue to those trapped in slavery. Our goal together is to support 20 rescue operations. Let's work together! Together we can help end slavery for good. We hope to see you there! When even Taylor Swift has taken a turn for the dark, it’s clear that a seismic mood shift has occurred within American culture.

  • Some Things and Ideas: February 2018
Some things and ideas: February 2018 Some internet links and ideas I've liked or found interesting in the past month Bill Nygren (Oakmark) Interview transcript I loved this interview. The line that really stuck out to me (and which modest proposal highlighted) is how twenty years ago you could simply buy low P/E stocks, but today the cheap stocks generally deserve to be cheap and the really interesting ideas today are ideas where P/E ratio misses the story. The idea here is a more elegant way of framing the idea I mentioned in my annual letter- finding value in things that computers / quant models can’t pick up. When I think about this line, I can’t help but think of “value investors” who’ve been short Netflix and Amazon for years. Most people who’ve shorted them have done so on the “they are great but they look expensive” thesis. I think that’s a failure to evolve mental models over time. Sure, both have always looked expensive, but if you were shorting them because they were a bit expensive you were really missing the forest for the trees. Kudos to Nygren for overcoming that bias. Along these lines: I (and I would guess most of my readers) belong to the cult of Malone, but I think it’s constantly underrated just how good of an investor Malone is / how early he was to recognize and adapt to new investing ideas. Remember, Malone got his start as a cable operator. But he expanded his fortune by going into cable channels and then continuing to expand into satellite radio, live event companies, sports leagues, and even online category killers (Lending Tree and TripAdvisor, though the later has been a… disappointment recently).

  • The Netflix Experience
The Netflix Experience Re-shaping the Creative Process: Cultural Co-Production of Content A user-focus approach to recommendation algorithms. Author: Daniela Renee Varela Martínez Supervisor: Anne Kaun Södertörns högskola | Department of Media and Communication Studies Thesis Project for Master in Media Communication and Cultural Analysis | 30 credits. Final Research | May 2017 For Mamá & Papá, For encouraging me to be the creator of my own life. 2 Abstract. This project proposes a user-focused approach to study the algorithm logic of on-demand apps, using Netflix as a case study. The main research interest is the perception that the user has about the suggestion and recommendation logic of Netflix. In order to gather the information, a walkthrough method on Netflix was applied as well as personal, in-depth think aloud interviews were carried out. The sample consisted on a selection of heavy users, millennials ex-pats living in Singapore and working in the creative industry to get specific insights on their relationship with the algorithm. To analyze the gathered material, qualitative content analysis was carried out. This kind of study is important within today’s contemporary media environment to have integral approach to users perceptions instead of just analytical figures and numbers. The theoretical context used to enlight some of the conclusions discussed on this research were based on the study of media in everyday life, global cultural industry studies, as well as algorithm culture and the science and technology studies. How algorithms are perceived have major repercussions not only on on- demand apps, technology business models or entertainment industry but also an intense influence on the way people consume content.
