Rider University Traditions

The President’s Robe The robe worn by the president of Rider University was presented by the Rider University Chapter of the American Association of University Professors to Dr. Dell’Omo as a welcome gift in 2015. The robe is cranberry and white, the University’s ofcial colors. It is worn by the president at formal academic occasions.

Andrew J. Rider Statue A bronze statue that bears the likeness of Rider University’s namesake, Andrew J. Rider, was commissioned by the 2018-19 Student Government Association. Located in front of the Bart Luedeke Center, the statue portrays Rider sitting on a bench with his arm draped atop it. Rider was instrumental in steering the early institution to success, and today many school traditions are linked to his legacy.

2 The Rider Rock The Rider Rock was initiated by students in 2006 to honor generations of Rider students and to connect them to the symbolic Rider Elm, the emblem of learning and the cycles of life. Incoming Rider students touch the Rider Rock following New Student Convocation, and graduating seniors complete the cycle during Senior Week. The ﬁve-foot-high granite rock, located on the Lawrenceville Campus Green, is inscribed with Rider’s motto, the Latin words “In Omnia Paratus,” which translates to “in all things prepared.” The inscription continues, “By touching the Rider Rock, we afrm our commitment to the pursuit of knowledge and the betterment of our world. Through the time we spent here, we are forever joined to the past and future generations of students and to Rider University.”

The Presidential Medallion The Presidential Medallion was presented to Dr. Dell’Omo on the occasion of his inauguration as Rider’s seventh president. The Presidential Medallion depicts the seal of the University and is inscribed with the University’s motto, the Latin words “In Omnia Paratus,” which translates to “in all things prepared.” Circular links of the chain represent each of the colleges and the names of each of Rider’s seven presidents are engraved on curved banner links. The medallion is worn by the president at ofcial University functions of high solemnity when academic attire is worn.

The Mace The mace, carried at the head of the procession, is a traditional symbol of authority at governmental, ecclesiastical and scholarly occasions. Originally a warlike implement, it has evolved in form and fabric to ﬁt its present ceremonial purpose. Of silver and ebony, the mace of Rider University is a memorial to Roland T. Henderson, Class of 1949, and was presented in 1975 by his widow, Elizabeth. The names of Rider’s seven presidents are engraved on the mace.

Academic Heraldry

The wearing of caps, gowns, and hoods at college and university functions dates back to the Middle Ages when they were ﬁrst worn by monks and students in order to keep warm in the damp and drafty 12th-century castles and halls of learning. Through the years, their style and color have come to represent certain exact meanings.

• Gowns for the associate’s and bachelor’s degrees, worn through undergraduate study, have a semi-stif yoke, long pleated front and intricate shirring across the shoulders and back. The gown is worn closed and is primarily distinguished by its long, pointed sleeves. • The gown for the master’s degree has the same yoke efect as that of the bachelor’s, but is so designed that it may be worn open or closed. The back of the sleeve is oblong and square cut. • Gowns for the doctoral degree are also worn open or closed. They have long velvet panels down the front and three velvet bars on the bell-shaped sleeves. This velvet trimming may be either black or the color distinctive of the ﬁeld of learning to which the degree pertains. • Caps may be mortarboards or soft, square-topped caps. The tassel of the associate’s and bachelor’s caps may be black thread; the tassel for the master’s cap, silver thread; and the tassel of the doctor’s cap, gold thread. • At Rider University, the tassel color indicates graduation with honors: undergraduate degree candidates receiving their degree with honors, cum laude, magna cum laude, or summa cum laude, wear white tassels. Master’s degree candidates receiving their degree with distinction wear tassels of cranberry. • The hood gives further color and meaning to the academic costume. The hood is a shell of varying sizes for the baccalaureate and graduate degrees and of material to match the gown. It is lined with the color or colors of the institution conferring the degree and is bordered with velvet of the proper width and color to indicate the ﬁeld of learning:

Jazmine Fenlator-Victorian ’07

Rider University is proud to welcome representation of multiple cultures. her first year of eligibility. She was also Jazmine Fenlator-Victorian ’07 as its 2019 honored as a notable alumna in celebration Commencement speaker and honorary Fenlator-Victorian’s bobsled career began of Rider’s 150th anniversary and received degree recipient. after the encouragement to try the sport the Sesquicentennial Medal of Excellence. in 2007 from former Rider coach Robert Fenlator-Victorian is a two-time Olympic Pasquariello. During her collegiate career Fenlator-Victorian earned a Bachelor of Arts athlete and former Rider University track at Rider, she earned All-East honors in Journalism with a minor in advertising and field standout. She made her Olympic eight times in the shot put, weight throw from Rider, a Master of Science with a focus debut at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, and the discus, setting Rider records in in Performance Enhancement and Injury Russia, competing as a pilot for Team USA all three events along with the hammer. 43 Distinguished Teaching Awards Dr. Danielle Jacobs Associate professor, Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Physics; Director, STEM Scholars

Dr. Danielle Jacobs teaches coursework in organic chemistry, physical organic chemistry, and experimental chemistry. Her research extends beyond chemistry to also include improving science communication and literacy. Jacobs earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Haverford College and a Doctor of Philosophy in Chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In nominating Jacobs for this award, one student wrote, “Danielle Jacobs is the reason that I am attending Rider University. I met Dr. Jacobs at a recruitment event. I had no plans of becoming a high school biology teacher, but she presented me with unexpected and much- appreciated inspiration.”

Dr. Kathleen Pierce Professor, Department of Graduate Education, Leadership, and Counseling

Dr. Kathleen Pierce specializes in preparing post-baccalaureate candidates in the Master of Arts in Teaching program for careers as teachers. A student nominating Pierce for this award wrote, “Dr. Pierce has formed partnerships with schools that beneﬁt not only her aspiring teachers but high school students as well. Her teacher candidates work with high school students on critical writing skills through technology and all gain valuable knowledge and experience.” Pierce earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Glassboro State College, a Master of Arts in English Education from Rutgers University and a Doctor of Philosophy in Reading, Writing and Literacy from the University of Pennsylvania. Dominick A. Iorio Research Award Dr. Heather Casey Professor, Department of Teacher Education

Dr. Heather Casey’s research has had a significant influence on theory, practice and policy in the field of literacy. Her research focuses on literacy learning clubs, supporting the professional identity of teachers, and shaping and influencing educational policy. She has authored or co-authored more than 30 works, including ones that have appeared in highly selective, peer-reviewed journals. She has presented at over 40 regional and national conferences, chaired two task forces for the International Literacy Association and recently completed her first book, Literacy Learning Clubs in Grades 4-8: Engaging Students Across the Disciplines (Guilford Publications). Casey has been a member of Rider’s Department of Teacher Education for 12 years.

Several initiatives aimed at fulfilling that commitment are a part of today’s ceremony:

• The eco-friendly caps and gowns being worn by graduates are made from 100 percent, post-consumer recycled plastic bottles with an average of 23 bottles used to make each gown. Funding for the GreenWeaver™ graduation gowns has been provided by the Rider University Energy and Sustainability Steering Committee (ESSC).

• In addition, this souvenir Commencement book has been printed by an FSC-certiﬁed printer with vegetable-based inks on FSC- certiﬁed paper with 10 percent post-consumer waste recycled content.

• The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international network existing to promote responsible management of the world’s forests. The FSC label identifies products that contain wood from well-managed forests certified in accordance with the rules of the FSC, which ensure that people, wildlife and the environment benefit from the forestry practices. FSC certification is globally recognized as being the most credible and strongest system for ensuring well-managed forests.
