Fixture/results 14 Danny Clackworthy leaves Mounts Bay This week (12/2/2009) Danny Clackworthy announced his decision to leave Mounts Bay for Hayle Rugby Club. This season Danny has made a successful transition from prop to hooker and week by week has shown a consistency that has made him an invaluable member of the squad.

Danny started out with as a youngster, then moved to Hayle in 2002 until late in 2004 when he switched to Mounts Bay as a front-row and has been at the forefront of Mounts bays achievements over the past 4 years and was clearly getting to grips with standards in divi- sion 2 as him and his front row colleagues have continued to demolish other packs within the league. However four years later the grind of National League rugby has taken its toll on Clack- worthy, who has been helping Mounts Bay out by playing at hooker as well as prop. His last game was as a replacement in the 6-5 win over London Scottish last Saturday. Speaking for the rest of the supporters Danny was viewed as a real club man and a genuine bloke off the pitch who always had time to talk to the supporters. Fitting for the Boarding party that he received player of the month for January and we wish him every success in the future and would like to see him back at Bay some day.

2 Mounts Bay RFC v London Scottish

Their version of events Mounts Bay 6 vs London Scottish 5 EDF National Trophy Fifth Round

London Scottish suffered their first defeat in 20 outings this season by the narrowest of margins fol- lowing a nail-bitingly close encounter against Mounts Bay at The Mennaye, Penzance in the fifth round of the EDF National Trophy. The draw pitted together two sides that have enjoyed similarly rapid rises through the divisions throughout the past decade, but which are experiencing contrasting fortunes in the league this season, with Mounts Bay hovering just above the relegation zone in National League 2, the division to which Scottish, one rung below and top of the table, are pushing to gain promotion. With the wind behind them, Scottish dominated the opening quarter of an hour, but it was the Cor- nish club that took the lead when full back Dan Hawkes kicked a penalty goal after 15 minutes. The home side’s lead was short-lived, however, with second rower Graeme Smith claiming a try just two minutes later after winning the ball at the lineout. Fly-half Scott Hadden failed to hit the target with his conversion attempt, a missed opportunity on an afternoon when points were at a premium. Scottish continued to control proceedings for the remainder of the first half but were unable to add to their points total, taking a 5-3 lead into the interval. Following the half-time break, it was the home side that benefited from the advantage of the wind, and continued pressure from the Mounts Bay forwards resulted in them taking the lead on 55 minutes when Hawkes kicked his second penalty of the afternoon. Although the Cornishmen dominated territory thereafter, there was to be no further score, and fur- ther misery was heaped on Scottish when replacement forward Lee Soper was sent to the sin-bin as the game neared its conclusion. The victory came as welcome respite for Mounts Bay in a season that has seen the club, promoted to National League 2 last year, embroiled in a relegation struggle on the pitch and beset by financial prob- lems off it, and fans will be crossing their fingers for a home quarter-final draw against local heavy- weights Cornish Pirates, their landlords at The Mennaye, or Exeter. From the London Scottish perspective, exit from the cup after an exhilarating run that has seen them beat Bristol outfit St Mary’s Old Boys, local rivals Richmond, Hampshire side Basingstoke – on an af- ternoon when the First XV was fulfilling a league fixture at Henley – and National 1 team Manchester means that the club can now concentrate exclusively on its push for promotion, a campaign that re- sumes next Saturday with the visit to Dings Crusaders.

3 Their version of events WHARFEDALE 28 MOUNTS BAY 16

Sunday 15 February 2009

Two exceptional individual tries from Wharfedale full-back Adam Whaites in the final quarter of this pulsating match sealed a crucial victory for the Greens. Both of Whaites’ runs started from within the Wharfedale half, and simply ripped the Mounts Bay defence apart.

His second, 2 minutes from time, could prove to be massively significant in the National Two relegation battle, as it both secured the Greens’ try bonus and robbed Bay of what would have been a well-deserved consolation of a losing bonus point.

With the result of immense importance to both sides, the match was never to be a classic. The tension saw to that. But there were thrills aplenty, with every breakdown robustly contested (occasionally over-robustly for Andrew Vertigan’s liking, the referee issuing yellow cards to Wharfedale’s Rob Baldwin and Ben Fear, and Mount Bay’s Nick Burnett).

The Dalesmen clearly enjoy their temporary ‘home’ venue, at Giggleswick School. As in their match the previous week, they left the blocks at speed. 10-0 up after just 8 minutes, from a try by hooker Dave Charnley after prop Ben Fear made the telling break, with the conversion and a penalty by Mark Bedworth, they looked on course for another straightforward victory.

But Mounts Bay were not prepared to knuckle under as Southend did in the first half. Lock Ben Hilton finished off a determined forwards’ surge (15 mins). Full-back Dan Hawkes converted, and then equalised the scores with a penalty during Baldwin’s carded absence (36).

A 40-metre break by prop Chris Steel soon after the re-start promised a score, but he was brought down 8 metres out. The resulting furore, as the forwards fought for the ball, had Mr Vertigan again reaching for his yel- low card, selecting Fear and Burnett as sample offenders.

Bedworth (51) and Hawkes (55) swapped penalties, before centre Chris Malherbe (58) and then Whaites (64) landed tries to open up a 10-point advantage for the Greens. The first came from a beautifully flighted cross-kick by Luke Gray; his opposite wing David Hall dived to collect the ball before flicking up a pass for the charging Malherbe to carry the final 3 metres to the right corner. Whaites, by comparison, had a good 60 metres separat- ing him from the line when he claimed the ball but his speed and strength took him through 3 attempted tackles for an exhilarating touch-down.

Bay now threw all they had at the Dalesmen, and were twice within inches of a retaliatory try. The home de- fence held, however, at the expense of just a Hawkes penalty (73).

At 23-16 the visitors were hoping at least to hold on to a precious bonus point, but Whaites’ second scything dash denied them even that.

6 Their version of events

Hero Hocking saves the day Mounts Bay 15, Cornish All Blacks 19

A Sam Hocking try deep into stoppage time saved the visitors from another defeat at the hands of league strugglers Mounts Bay. With the Cornish All Blacks leading 14-12 on full time they were penalised for handling in the ruck well within the kicking range of the met- ronomic boot of Dan Hawkes. As the ball sailed a good two feet left of the posts the touch-judges signalled a goal! Knowing that they dare not then let the ball go out of play Cornish All Blacks kept possession, recycled and recycled as they edged ever closer to the Bay line. Eventually Tom Skelding passed to Sam Hocking who was never going to be stopped from eight metres out. Job done but near heart attacks for the Launceston supporters, writes Tony Randel.

This was not a pretty game. It was characterised by sloppy Launceston handling by the backs and massive indiscipline in the first half. They managed to stamp their authority on the game in the second period but Bay, fighting for National Two survival, were never going to do anything but play with great determination and spirit – it so nearly came off. If it had they would have kept alive their slen- der hope of survival; as it was they appear to be consigned to the lower league next season, barring some miracles.

Cornish All Blacks opened the scoring with a Mal Roberts penalty after only two minutes but it took less than a further two minutes for Dan Hawkes to reply as Cornish All Blacks conceded the first of eight penalties in the first period. Launceston had the first of a number of scoring chances when Tom Skelding made a good break only for Jason Luff, on loan from Exeter for the remainder of the season, to knock-on just short of the line.

On 17/18 minutes Roberts and Hawkes again traded penalties but on the 20 minute mark Bay went ahead with Hawkes’ third penalty from 40m. Tom Rawlings had an earlier knock to which he eventually succumbed on the half hour for Glen Remnant to bring a bit more size to the pack who were not having all their own way against a strong Bay except in the line-out where Tom Skelding was magnificent. When Josh Lord was yellow carded for obstruction, whilst preventing an almost certain try, Hawkes stroked Bay into a `12-6 lead much to the very noisy joy of their partisan spectators.

Although Launceston conceded a further three penalties before the turn round Bay could not capitalise on any of them. Bay had had a stiffish wind behind them in the first half but any ideas the visitors had of using that to their advantage in the second period were dashed by it turning through 180° and dropping!

Cornish All Blacks looked more determined in the second half although Hawkes tried to extend the hosts lead with a very ambitious drop goal attempt from 40m early on. Jason Luff made a super jinking run through the centre but was stopped just short of the line. Then a good period of Launceston play saw Ryan Westren work the ball across the field before the pack re-grouped to drive Glen Remnant over. Although Adam Staniforth missed the difficult conversion the Cornish All Blacks were back in touch at 12-11.

They so nearly lost even that when Bay winger Sam Parsons, who had been a thorn in the side of the visitors all day, intercepted a long pass in the Launceston 22 and sped upfield on his own. Although he was eventually brought down by Gary Kingdom’s superior speed it was a close run thing. With ten minutes to go Mal Roberts inexplicable missed a relatively easy penalty. When Adam Stani- forth lined up for the next, from 47m, with 2 minutes to go it looked to be a ‘do or die’ moment. As it sailed, apparently effortlessly, between the posts the Bay crowd fell silent for the first time amidst the cries of ‘Come on you blacks’!

Then the extraordinary events of the last nine minutes! If you could guarantee every game of rugby being as exciting as this one in the last ten minutes surely we would get bigger crowds – or would they all have had heart failure!

Other results in the league went the way expected so there is no real change at the top although the fact that the four teams cur- rently above us all got five points has made the task of gaining promotion even more difficult!

No game next weekend as all our potential opponents are catching-up on other postponed games; but we do wish Josh Lord and Mike Myerscough all good wishes as they pull on the coveted white Jersey for Counties in Ireland.

7 Their version of events

Mounts Bay 7v Nottingham 66 28th February 2009 - The Mennaye It was an early start for the loyal Green Army travelling fans but they were rewarded for their commitment with a free flowing display of rugby from a rampant Nottingham side that ran in 10 tries to book their place in the Semi Final of the EDF Energy National Trophy and keep the dream of a Twicken- ham final alive. The picturesque, Mennaye Field, former home of the Cornish Pirates was the venue for the Quarter Final against National Division Two side, Mounts Bay. The Mennaye, which is a stones throw from the English Channel, had reportedly been deep in mud just weeks before but the Green and Whites would have been pleased to find a hard and fast pitch on their arrival in Penzance. Nottingham, in their all white away strip, were made to wait for a number of minutes by their opponents as tension grew around the ground but the delay seemed to only add fire to the Notting- ham side as their opposition finally appeared from the dressing room. It was clear from the kick off that the Green and Whites meant business and were intent on dominating the game in the early exchanges. The tone was set by Tim Molenaar, who was making his first start since November. A clean lineout on half way gave the powerhouse centre a perfect platform to attack the Mounts Bay midfield and he brushed aside the attempted tackle from the 10 and 12 and looked to be clear through to the line. Covering defence managed to halt Molenaar's run under the post but Nottingham produced quick ball to release David Jackson down the left hand side and the Green and Whites were ahead 5-0 in the first minute of the game. Tim Taylor missed the conversion. Such an early try could have easily seen Nottingham take the foot off the pedal but there was clear evidence of a dogged deter- mination about the side as Joe Duffey caught the kick off cleanly and set off on one of his trademark runs. It took just 8 minutes for Nottingham to extend their lead. Controlled pressure forced a centre field scrum deep in the Mounts Bay 22. Number 8, Dan Montagu, fed Chris Pilgrim who took the gap and dived over the line, Taylor adding the conversion. And it was Taylor who was next to cross the line following a lovely break down the middle of the pitch. Taylor grubber kicked ahead and re gathered to score under the posts and he added the easiest of conversions to give Nottingham a 17-0 lead after just 11 minutes. The Green and Whites continued to use their pace and power to test the Mounts Bay defence and second row, Sam McDonald, starting in place of the Australia bound Lee Morley, crossed the line from close range. Taylor converted. Talismanic captain, Craig Hammond was next on the score sheet, on 28 minutes, to take the score to 31-0. An injury to Sam McDonald meant the early introduction of Ian Nimmo, an imposing figure, who had an outstanding debut. As it looked like Nottingham might rattle up a cricket score Mounts Bay hit back with a try just before half time. Despite the power and pace of the Nottingham play the Mounts Bay pack kept coming at the Green and Whites and they were re- warded for their pressure in the scoreboard corner of the ground when Hilton broke free from a maul to dive over. Fly Half, Dan Hawkes, kicked the conversion from the touchline. The home side's spell of pressure continued into the second half but the Nottingham defence held firm and it was Jack- son who got them back on track slicing through the defence to score under the posts on 48 minutes. Taylor converted to take the score to 38-7. The try prompted a number of changes from the management team and University students, Charlie Hayter and Charlie Davies, were introduced. Both players slipped seamlessly into the side in place of Tim Mole- naar and Chris Pilgrim respectively and the game started to open up. Both sides were now throwing caution to the wind and running the ball at every opportunity. Nottingham continued to dominate the game and tries from Nic Rouse, who has scored in every round this season, and Jack Cobden took the score to 59-7 Adam Corcoran and James Kirk replaced Dan Montagu and Matt Parr, respectively and Jackson rounded off the game in style completing his hatrick and sending the Green Army home with smiles on their faces and no doubt dreaming of Twickenham. 8 The History of Mounts Bay RFC Part 2 By Mountie

Views on Rugby in the 1940s/50s and Revelation Therefore, so far in that 1948/49 season Mount’s Bay RFC had won 5, drawn 1, lost 4, points for 63, points against 39. The matches seem to have been extremely close for the most part, in spite of a different points system. Contributors to the Mount’s Bay Forum with knowledge of the past have commented on these results and one says: “Many games in the forties and fifties were won by the odd score. It was always difficult to put moves together to score a try. The ball had to be 'got rid of' immediately the tackle was made - and it was made when the tackled player's knee touched the ground. (None of this going to ground rolling over and pushing the ball back to a friendly face a couple of minutes later.) The knock on law was much more 'efficient'. Anything other than a clean catch was deemed to be a knock on. Also a pass had to be backwards i.e. level was a forward pass. The ball was also difficult to handle if at all wet (and more difficult than the modern ball even if it were not wet). The ball was also more difficult to kick - nothing like as aerodynamic as the ball now.” And another, explaining that he attended the Penzance Grammar School where Ben Batten was his form master in the first year, adds, “My vague understanding was that Mounts Bay was always a youth/colts team, but I could be wrong as Hayle Albion was a junior club of adult players, I believe [one of my school mate's fathers had played for them]……..In terms of points for scores, of course, in those far off days it was 3 for a try, 2 for a kick, 3 for a penalty and, until 1948 I think, 4 for a drop goal. You could still kick directly into touch from anywhere on the field and the line out would be where the ball crossed the line, so an attri- tional game with relatively few tries was the norm at all levels, assuming the sides were fairly evenly matched. There was a notorious England/Wales international in, I think, 1963 or 64 played in bad weather, when there were 100 or so line-outs . After that the powers that be started to look at the line out rules and eventually the law changed.”

9 An interesting response followed from the contributor of the photograph itself, who announced him- self as Roger Trevennen. He was able to throw further light on the subject of Mount’s Bay Rugby Club’s beginnings. He tells us, “I submitted the photo in question. I first went to Penzance County Grammar School (as it was known then) in 1948. At that time rugby was not played at the school, only soccer! due to the fact the School PE Master (Mr. Stan Harris) was an ex International Welsh soccer player, but although being Welsh, he disapproved of rugby in the school!

The referee of the game which gave rise to the photo was Mr. Fred Jarvis, a master at the school. He was also in charge of the local Air Training Cadets and was a rugby fanatic. To get around no rugby being played at the school, he encouraged Air Training Corps cadets from the Penzance ATC Squadron 24F to play rugby at the Mennaye. Members initially played for the Penzance/ Colts, then, if memory serves me right, at the age of 16 years you then played for Mounts Bay, who were part of the Club, the Mounts Bay shirt colour be- ing all light blue in colour. From there you would hope to graduate to the Penzance/Newlyn Reserves and the Chiefs.” Of the light blue, collared shirts shown in the picture, Mr Trevennen goes on to say in a later post: “…the shirts being worn by the school team for this game, were on loan from the original Mounts Bay. School had no official shirts at that time.” And a little later: “…the shorts for the School game were white. I can't honestly remember the colour of the shorts when playing for Mounts Bay at that time, seem to recall either black or navy blue (old style with side pockets)” (Early pho- tographs seem rather to show white shorts) Contributor on the ‘PicturePenzance’ website, ‘newlynmawe’, later added yet another comment under the picture of ‘Penzance Grammar School v Cathedral School 1950/51 (Rugby)', and this time he says:

"Newlyn, Penzance and the Pirates" by Ben Batten refers to the opening match of the Club in 1945 , where there was mention in the programme of the recently-formed Mount`s Bay RFC. This provided Under18s with rugby where there was little or no provision in the Schools. There were Colts games against the Colts teams around the County and some Public Schools. Eventually they were renamed as the Pirates Colts and the Mount`s Bay nomenclature fell into disuse. They sometimes fielded 2 sides and there are some photos in Ben Batten`s book. Thus we have a definitive date for the founding of Mount’s Bay RFC. It was in 1945 .
