												  Vascular Plant Survey of Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve, MalawiYIKA-VWAZA TRUST RESEARCH STUDY REPORT N (2017/18) Vascular Plant Survey of Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve, Malawi By Sopani Sichinga ([email protected]) September , 2019 ABSTRACT In 2018 – 19, a survey on vascular plants was conducted in Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve. The reserve is located in the north-western Malawi, covering an area of about 986 km2. Based on this survey, a total of 461 species from 76 families were recorded (i.e. 454 Angiosperms and 7 Pteridophyta). Of the total species recorded, 19 are exotics (of which 4 are reported to be invasive) while 1 species is considered threatened. The most dominant families were Fabaceae (80 species representing 17. 4%), Poaceae (53 species representing 11.5%), Rubiaceae (27 species representing 5.9 %), and Euphorbiaceae (24 species representing 5.2%). 												  Ixoroideae– RubiaceaeIAWA Journal, Vol. 21 (4), 2000: 443–455 WOOD ANATOMY OF THE VANGUERIEAE (IXOROIDEAE– RUBIACEAE), WITH SPECIAL EMPHASIS ON SOME GEOFRUTICES by Frederic Lens1, Steven Jansen1, Elmar Robbrecht2 & Erik Smets1 SUMMARY The Vanguerieae is a tribe consisting of about 500 species ordered in 27 genera. Although this tribe is mainly represented in Africa and Mada- gascar, Vanguerieae also occur in tropical Asia, Australia, and the isles of the Pacific Ocean. This study gives a detailed wood anatomical de- scription of 34 species of 15 genera based on LM and SEM observa- tions. The secondary xylem is homogeneous throughout the tribe and fits well into the Ixoroideae s.l. on the basis of fibre-tracheids and dif- fuse to diffuse-in-aggregates axial parenchyma. The Vanguerieae in- clude numerous geofrutices that are characterised by massive woody branched or unbranched underground parts and slightly ramified un- branched aboveground twigs. The underground structures of geofrutices are not homologous; a central pith is found in three species (Fadogia schmitzii, Pygmaeothamnus zeyheri and Tapiphyllum cinerascens var. laetum), while Fadogiella stigmatoloba shows central primary xylem which is characteristic of roots. Comparison of underground versus aboveground wood shows anatomical differences in vessel diameter and in the quantity of parenchyma and fibres. Tropical Africa is the centre of diversity (about 80% of the species are found in Africa and Madagascar), although the tribe is also present in tropical Asia, Australia, and the isles of the Pacific Ocean (Bridson 1987).

Box FM730, Famona, Bulawayo, Zimbabwe Vegetation Survey of Mt Gorongosa, page 2 SUMMARY Mount Gorongosa is a large inselberg almost 700 sq. km in extent in central Mozambique. With a vertical relief of between 900 and 1400 m above the surrounding plain, the highest point is at 1863 m. The mountain consists of a Lower Zone (mainly below 1100 m altitude) containing settlements and over which the natural vegetation cover has been strongly modified by people, and an Upper Zone in which much of the natural vegetation is still well preserved. Both zones are very important to the hydrology of surrounding areas. Immediately adjacent to the mountain lies Gorongosa National Park, one of Mozambique's main conservation areas. A key issue in recent years has been whether and how to incorporate the upper parts of Mount Gorongosa above 700 m altitude into the existing National Park, which is primarily lowland. [These areas were eventually incorporated into the National Park in 2010.] In recent years the unique biodiversity and scenic beauty of Mount Gorongosa have come under severe threat from the destruction of natural vegetation. This is particularly acute as regards moist evergreen forest, the loss of which has accelerated to alarming proportions.

One of the major achievements of the Flora is having a complete account of all the Mono cotyledons. These are found in Volumes 6 (1997 – all monocots except the grasses) and 7 (1995 – the grasses) of the Flora. One of the main aims of publishing the Flora of Ethiopia and Eritrea was to stimulate further research in the region. This challenge was taken by the authors (with important input also from Odd E. Stabbetorp) in 2003 when the first edition of ‘Flowers of Ethiopia and Eritrea: Aloes and other Lilies’ was published (a book now out of print). The project was supported through the NUFU (Norwegian Council for Higher Education’s Programme for Development Research and Education) funded Project of the University of Oslo, Department of Biology, and Addis Ababa University, National Herbarium in the Biology Department. What you have at hand is a second updated version of ‘Flowers of Ethiopia and Eritrea: Aloes and other Lilies’.

INTRODUCTION AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS All the species dealt with in this study were collected in the Ivory Coast, Africa by VERSTEEGH and DEN OUTER in 1969. Although most collecting areas are near the main roads, a sufficient allround impression of the forest situation could be obtained because smaller or larger forested areas are often within reach of the road. Only those trees, shrubs and climbers which were flowering or fruiting in secondary forest-areas, mangrove and the savanna were examined. A few were collected in old plantations. One of the reasons to make the collection was to prepare a determination key kept as simple as possible, based on field characters and particularly those of the bark. The total number of considered species is 593, viz.: 144 trees with a dbh of more than 25 cm, 180 trees with a dbh of less than 25 cm, 152 shrubs and 117 climbers.
