Introduetion This graduation project deals with the topic of a new accommodation facility for tourists in South Limburg. The region is mostly filled with old-fashioned small hotels that are transformed from previous residential housing, vacation apartments transformed from farmhouses, and camping sites. In this project I want to search for a new design approach that is contemporary, but also fits within the local atmosphere. For this design 3 ideas are very important. Firstly, the existing hotel and vacation apartments' typologies in this region are carefully studled and applied to the design in order to bring a local feeling. Secondly, local material, wood and mergel (a type of marl unique to the area of South Limburg), are chosen as building matenals for different parts in the design. Also the way they are either a structural element or attached to the structure is carefully studied. Thirdly, the location of the building is on a slope, which gives special opportunities for building placement, views, lighting, closeness and openness. The design program consistsof a hotel including 27 rooms, a youth hostel containing 36 beds, a landscape yard and a music hall for local band performance and cultural festivals like the famous 'Gulpener Bierfeesten'. Hopefully, with this accommodation facility design, tourists can come into contact with the local culture, and popularize it further. • 2.
