  • Combatting Pseudoscience: a Science Editorial and Health Literacy Workshop to Improve Scientific Literacy in 16-Year-Old Students in Malaysia
Combatting Pseudoscience: A Science Editorial and Health Literacy Workshop to Improve Scientific Literacy in 16-Year-Old Students in Malaysia Hannah M NAZRI Nuffield Department of Women’s & Reproductive Health, University of Oxford, Women’s Centre, John Radcliffe Hospital, United Kingdom Submitted: 11 Aug 2019 Accepted: 23 Sep 2019 Online: 4 Nov 2019 To cite this article: Nazri HM. Combatting pseudoscience: a science and health literacy workshop to improve scientific literacy in 16-year-old students in Malaysia.Malays J Med Sci. 2019;26(5):1–5. https://doi.org/10.21315/ mjms2019.26.5.1 To link to this article: https://doi.org/10.21315/mjms2019.26.5.1 Abstract The rise of dubious medical practice and anti-vaccination groups in Malaysia suggests that the public needs to be equipped with the scientific literacy skills to navigate the healthcare landscape. Additionally, the overall result of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2009+ for Malaysia suggests that the national scientific literacy levels of 16-year-old Malaysian students to be below the international and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) average. Consequently, the Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) was introduced to form part of the national English language evaluation in 2013 to encourage creative and critical thinking. In this editorial piece, I describe a youth-led intervention that may be more effective at increasing scientific literacy to combat pseudoscience in Malaysian youth especially in bridging the education inequality gap in Malaysia. Keywords: critical thinking, education, health literacy, health advocacy, misinformation, Malaysia Introduction specialist, may not be able to comment on stem cell therapy, for example.

  • SOALAN LAZIM PENYAKIT NOVEL CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) 15 November 2020
SOALAN LAZIM PENYAKIT NOVEL CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) 15 November 2020 Soalan 1: Apakah coronavirus?

  • Malaysia's Health
MINISTRY OF HEALTH MALAYSIA MALAYSIA’S HEALTH 2008 Foreword The right to health is being recognised as a basic human right in the WHO Constitution. It is increasingly acknowledged that health is not just a result of development and poverty reduction, but also a precondition for development. Investing in health is investing in development. The Ministry of Health has over the years introduced various health programmes to improve patient safety and the population’s health. The actual implementation and their success depend on the rigourity of the planning processes and the quality of plans. In turn, this is dependent on the comprehensiveness and accuracy of information available for use at all levels. This edition of the report attempts to provide information on a comprehensive range of topics relating to health care services, population health, health system management and research undertaken by the Ministry of Health. It is broad ranging and attempts to not only provide a brief overview of the issues and challenges faced by the various programmes in their implemention, but also on the latest initiatives and their potential benefits. For example, the principles of primary health care have been universally accepted and yet the implementation varies widely throughout the world. How we have fared and where we move from here is shared in this edition. Other topics covered include overviews of newer initiatives such as Stem Cell research and the introduction of computer based multiple risk factor intervention in the prevention of cardiovascular and chronic kidney diseases (CORFIS). Prevention of non-communicable diseases (NCD) and their subsequent management remains a concern and challenge.
