Matthew Haffner 2008 - Present DELTA Certificate Canidate, 2010 - Expected Completion: 2012 • Through this program I learn about the teaching and learning process. DELTA holds three core ideas : teaching as research, learning through diversity, and learning community. Teaching Workshops & Symposium • Teaching with Technology { Special Topic Workshop, AAS Seattle, WA 2011 • Letters & Science Teaching Symposium, University of Wisconsin-Madison 2010 M.A., Physics, May 2009 Western Washington University, Bellingham, Washington USA B.S., Physics, June, 2006 Professional Wisconsin H-alpha Mapper - University of Wisconsin Experience Research Assistant Advisor: Dr. L. Matthew Haffner Summer, 2008 - Present Currently investigating galactic interactions with warm halo gas focusing on the Magellanic Bridge and High Velocity Cloud Complex A. Duties include remotely observing the Warm Interstellar Medium with WHAM and analyzing resulting data. Overall maintenance of WHAM from investi- gating long term trends in data to on-site maintenance. Space Physics - University of Wisconsin Research Assistant Advisor: Dr. Dan McCammon Fall, 2006 - Spring, 2008 Studied the Diffuse X-ray Background using sounding rockets. Duties included developing and main- taining data analyzing software (Fortran, IDL, C), testing low temperature detectors and infrared filters, maintenance of the lab (everything from vacuum systems to circuit boards). Participated in the X-Ray Quantum Calorimeter sounding rocket launch in April 2008 at White Sands, NM. Summer researcher Advisors: Dr. Dan McCammon & Dr. Mark Lindeman Summer, 2005 Developed model for investigating complex impedance measurements of calorimeters & bolometers. Synchrotron Radiation Center - University of Wisconsin Summer researcher Advisor: Dr. Ralf Wehlitz Summer, 2004 Conducted experiments to study the modulations in the relative double-photoionization cross section of C60 Observing Wisconsin H-Alpha Mapper Kitt Peak, Arizona USA & Cerro Tololo, Chile 2008 - present Experience Hundreds of hours of Fabry-Perot spectroscopy of the Warm Interstellar Medium WIYN 0.9 m Telescope Kitt Peak, Arizona USA 2009 - 6 nights Optical Imaging Photometry using the S2KB instrument Teaching Teaching Assistant - Astronomy 103 Solar Systems, University of Wisconsin-Madison Experience Kathleen A. Barger 2 Course Professor: Eric Hooper Spring - 2009 Taught six weekly sections, each with approximately 25 students, in an introductory astronomy course. Lead 2 of the main 150 student lectures. Public Outreach Universe in the Park, Madison, Wisconsin USA 2007 - present Give public astronomy talks and run observing sessions with 6- and 8-inch telescopes in Wisconsin state parks. Washburn Observatory, Madison, Wisconsin USA 2007 - present Lead public and UW-Madison class observing nights with the Washburn Observatory 16-inch re- fracting telescope. Whatcom Association of Celestial Observers, Bellingham, Washington USA Vice President 2004 Member 2003-2006 As vice president, a large part of my duties consisted of organizing and hosting pubic star parties. I also scheduled speakers for our monthly meetings. Planetarium - Western Washington University, Bellingham, Washington USA 2003 - 2006 Hosted planetarium shows for the community. During my employment, the projector got upgraded to a digital projector. I operated both systems. With the traditional projection system, I ran and narrated the shows; with the digital system, I ran shows and answered questions about the shows. Service Faculty Search Committee, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Wisconsin 2010-2011 Duties included reviewing and discussing candidates, co-hosting prospective faculty visits, and being a liaison between the faculty and graduate students. Galileo Under Wisconsin Skies, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Wisconsin July 2009 Co-Hosted a fundraising event with the Astronomy Department, SpacePlace, and the UW Foun- dation that included the board of visitors, potential donors, and alumni. The event consisted of multiple activities including talks, star parties, and telescope building. American Astronomical Society Meeting Volunteer, Seattle, Washington January 2006 Duties consisted of aiding and directing attendees, and helping with talk logistics during the sessions.
