  • Review of the Newtowne Players at Three Notch Theatre's Production of STEEL MAGNOLIAS
Review of the Newtowne Players at Three Notch Theatre's production of STEEL MAGNOLIAS Posted by TBN On 09/17/2012 STEEL MAGNOLIAS, by Robert Harling, will run at the Three Notch Theatre in Lexington Park from September 21 through October 7. Veteran Newtowne Theatre Players director Kerry Robinson was coaxed out of semi-retirement to assemble a stellar cast to bring to life this story of six gossip-loving Southern ladies in a Chinquapin Parish, Louisiana beauty parlor. The plot twists range from being hysterically funny to heartbreakingly sad, and it’s almost guaranteed that there will not be a dry eye in the audience by the play’s end. The Hollywood version starred Shirley MacLaine and Dolly Parton, along with Sally Field and Julia Roberts as the mother-daughter team. Mr. Robinson had wisely decided to create real-life characters instead of having his actresses imitate Hollywood mega-stars in this production. The dress rehearsal which I attended began with greetings from the Director who advised that things might not be quite perfect on this particular night, as opening night was still a week away, and perhaps not everything was working smoothly, as yet. But the evening ran almost flawlessly including the gunshots, telephone cues, Christmas tree lights, radio announcements, and on-stage shampoos! Act I opens in springtime with a busy day in the beauty shop as Annelle (the bubbly and adorable Emily Funderburk, who will be remembered for her scene-stealing role in last year’s NTP production of The Man Who Came to Dinner) is being hired by Truvy (NTP veteran Stacy Oosterink in a dynamic performance here), owner of the shop.

  • Playhouse Square Is Tickled Pink to Present Cleveland Play House's
April 21, 2016 Contact: Kelly Luecke FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE [email protected] (216) 712-6292 Playhouse Square is Tickled Pink to Present Cleveland Play House’s Production of STEEL MAGNOLIAS May 21 – August 21 CLEVELAND, OH (April 21, 2016) Playhouse Square and Cleveland Play House (CPH) are joining forces for the first time in history to bring Cleveland audiences a truly unforgettable production full of sass, style and sisterhood. STEEL MAGNOLIAS will run May 21 – August 21 in the Allen Theatre as part of Playhouse Square’s KeyBank Broadway Series. Written by Robert Harling and set in Louisiana in the 1980’s, STEEL MAGNOLIAS is equal parts hilarious and heartwarming. At Truvy’s beauty shop, the motto is: there’s no such thing as natural beauty—the women are all sass and brass. Through clouds of hairspray and over the buzz of blow dryers, six southern spitfires gather each week to chat and support each other through thick and thin. But those bonds are about to be tested when M’Lynn and her daughter Shelby face a life-changing crisis. Infused with heart and humor, STEEL MAGNOLIAS is a hilarious story that touches on love, loss, and enduring friendship. Directed by CPH Artistic Director Laura Kepley and comprised of an all-female cast and artistic team, STEEL MAGNOLIAS explores the bonds of six friends who know what it’s like to be there through thick and thin. Executive Producer of Playhouse Square Gina Vernaci notes, “When Laura Kepley suggested STEEL MAGNOLIAS as our co-production, I read the script. And immediately I was reminded of how much I enjoy this play and the bond between its lovable characters.

The Call Is Places 2019–2020 SUBSCRIBER NEWSLETTER Steel Magnolias Oct 26 – Dec 15 McGuire Proscenium Stage WELCOME From Artistic Director Joseph Haj SEASON 2019–2020 2019–2020 The Glass Menagerie Sept 14 – Oct 27, 2019 Dear Friends, Wurtele Thrust Stage Let me start with a confession: Before Steel Magnolias surfaced in our Steel Magnolias season planning discussions, I had never read the play, seen the play or Oct 26 – Dec 15, 2019 watched the famed 1989 film. Thankfully, I wasn’t alone. Our esteemed McGuire Proscenium Stage director Lisa Rothe and several members of our creative team were just as unfamiliar with this sharp-witted and irreverently funny group of Southern A Christmas Carol women. But the moment we immersed ourselves in the script and their Nov 12 – Dec 29, 2019 stories, we fell in love with each and every one of them, quirks and all. Wurtele Thrust Stage Robert Harling wrote the play as an homage to his late sister, Susan, Noura which explains the deep honor and care he gives to his “steel magnolias.” Jan 11 – Feb 16, 2020 McGuire Proscenium Stage I continue to be struck by how much these women love and care for each other despite their differences. They each have their own highs and lows, Twelfth Night but they face everything life throws at them together. That is the secret Feb 8 – March 22, 2020 to their strength, and, as Harling hints at in the title, that is what makes Wurtele Thrust Stage them flourish. The Bacchae Steel Magnolias is a celebration of strong women, so I’m thrilled that Feb 29 – April 5, 2020 this play is being directed and designed by an all-female team who McGuire Proscenium Stage is supported by our outstanding staff at the Guthrie.
