As Chapter Webmaster for the past few years, Nancy Bensimon has received many emails from community members offering to donate stashes of no-longer-needed fabric and other sewing-related items. Nancy Bensimon Another Chapter member, Kathy Sterling, who is a community college sewing instructor, knew that fashion and design students can always use free fabric for their class projects. Fortunately these two women got together and set up a system designed to convey fabric from those who don't need it to those who do. At the same time, they were keeping perfectly good fabric out of the landfills. But then along came Covid. With the advent of the pandemic, schools and Kathy Sterling community education centers closed, but the donations kept coming. Soon mountains of donated fabric accumulated in Nancy's and Kathy's homes and garages. When the mountains grew too big and it was clear Covid would not be going away soon, the women knew something had to give, so they organized a fabric giveaway for ASG members. Using Covid guidelines of social distancing, mask-wearing and an outdoor venue, they set up tables in Nancy’s driveway and organized the donations by fabric, patterns, books and notions. Reservations for five people per hour kept everyone spread out. A total of 25 people attended the November event. Among the attendees were two non-ASG women who were referred by members and expressed interest in joining one of our Neighborhood Groups! Another woman was looking for mask fabric; she has made over 3,000 masks! And, a young lady came with her grandma and was thrilled to take away several boxes of fashion fabric and patterns to use in her fashion class at San Dieguito Academy, where they mostly do upcycling. "We were so happy to hear about a sewing class in a local high school," said Nancy. "And bravo to Kathy Sterling for distributing all these donations the last few years!" Kathy said: "We will resume accepting and distributing donations once Covid is conquered and schools are permanently open again." Both ladies agreed the fabric giveaway was a great success, with almost everything finding a new home! ASG says, Thank you, Nancy and Kathy, for your service to the community and to ASG! Needle Network 5 Try a Simple Burn Test for Fabric Have you ever found a great piece of fabric but didn’t know the composition? Determining fiber content can be difficult as often fabrics are a combination of fibers. If a fabric is pure, fiber content can usually be determined by what is often referred to as a “Burn Test.” Follow directions below. Begin by snipping off a small piece of fabric. Have a non-flammable dish close by for burnt samples. Hold fabric with tweezers, not your fingers, and hold the fabric to a flame from a match or a lighter. Watch fabric closely and use the following chart to aid in determining fiber. Acetate: Melts under flame, leaves brittle black bead. Smells like vinegar. Acrylic: Melts under flame, keeps burning after flame removed. Leaves brittle black bead, no smell. Cotton: Burns quickly with yellow flame, continues burning after flame removed. Leaves soft gray ash. Smells like burning paper. Linen: Burns quickly with yellow flame, continues burning after flame is removed. Leaves soft gray ash. Smells like burning paper. Nylon: Melts and burns slowly. Leaves a hard gray bead. Smells like celery. Polyester: Burns slowly trailing black smoke. Leaves a hard black bead. Has no smell. Rayon: Burns quickly with yellow flame, continues burning after flame removed. Leaves soft gray ash. Smells like burning paper. Silk: Sizzles in flame, burns slowly. Leaves crushable black ash. Smells of burning hair or feathers. Wool: Sizzles in flame, burns slowly. Leaves crushable black ash. Smells of burning hair or feathers. A Little Chuckle for You... Wanted! Articles and photos for the Needle Network newsletter! How about book recommendations, new product reviews, Craftsy class reviews, sewing tips, or patterns you like (or don't like and why). And don't forget to send in photos of your projects. We all love to see what others are doing! Send submissions to Nancy Stringer, [email protected]. Deadlines are the 10th of the month prior to publication, so the next deadline is Feb. 10. Needle Network 6 Hooray for Hollywood! In today's "new normal" of spending more time at home, at least for a while, you may have more opportunity to put your feet up and enjoy some quality TV time. In this second of three installments, we focus on television series. Our third and final installment will feature documentaries. So grab some popcorn and enjoy! TV Series: "Next in Fashion" -- Tan France and Alexa Chung host a Project Runway style format, but the designers are at a higher level and all currently run their own companies. The designers are generally pretty kind to each other and it's really great watching. (Netflix) "Making the Cut" -- Hosted by Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn.
