Examining Committee Duane Szafron, Computing Science Jonathan Schaeffer, Computing Science Mike Carbonaro, Faculty of Education Abstract As video game designers focus on immersive interactive stories, the number of game object interactions grows exponentially. Most games use manually- programmed scripts to control object interactions, although automated techniques for generating scripts from high-level specifications are being introduced. For example, ScriptEase provides designers with generative patterns that inject commonly-occurring interactions into games. ScriptEase patterns generate scripts for the game Neverwinter Nights. A kind of generative pattern, the quest pattern, generates scripting code controlling the plot in story-based games. I present my additions to the quest pattern architecture (meta quest points and abandonable subquests), a catalogue of quest patterns, and the results of two studies measuring their effectiveness.

parallax, 2019, Vol. 25, No. 4, 446–470, Animal Borderlands https://doi.org/10.1080/13534645.2020.1731011 Difficulties Tom Tyler When the videogame developer Valve came to create the sequel to their highly successful shooter Half-Life (Valve, 1998), work began on a new character model for Gordon Freeman, the game’s protagonist. For Freeman’s face, pho- tographs of four different Valve employees–David Speyrer, Eric Kirchmer, Greg Coomer and Kelly Bailey–were combined to produce a rather generic- looking composite.1 In the final design, Freeman is a bearded, bespectacled, unexceptional individual in his late twenties. During the events of Half-Life, Freeman was the unwitting cause of a catastrophic accident at the high-security Black Mesa Research Facility, resulting in the opening of an interdimensional portal. From the rift a slew of hostile, nightmarish creatures emerged, against which Freeman was forced to do battle. The events of Half-Life 2 (Valve, 2004) and further entries in the series–Half-Life 2: Episode One (Valve, 2006), Half-Life 2: Episode Two (Valve, 2007), and Half-Life: Alyx (Valve, 2020)–take place some time later in a dystopian future, following Earth’s subjugation by a brutal alien empire known as the Combine. In Half-Life 2, Freeman joins a ragtag resistance who are fighting back against their extra-terrestrial oppressors, and now finds himself charged with the task of liberating humanity.2 Despite this fantastical narrative, and the monumental challenges with which he must deal, Freeman is a mere academic, a scientist with no training or experience in combat or derring-do.

  • The Reasons That Contributed to the Different Success Stories of Space RTS Games Homeworld and O.R.B
The reasons that contributed to the different success stories of space RTS games Homeworld and O.R.B. Faculty of Arts Department of Game Design Author: Rokas Paulauskas Bachelor Thesis in Game Design, 15 hp Program: Game Design and Programming Supervisor: Masaki Hayashi Examiner: Patrick Prax May, 2021 Abstract Sometimes games that belong to the same genre achieve different levels of success among the player base of the genre. As an example, of two space RTS games Homeworld (released in 1999) and O.R.B. (re‑ leased in 2002), which feature a similar setting and similar gameplay mechanics, Homeworld has been more successful. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the reasons for the different popularity of the two games, using game reviews as the primary source of data to learn about the strengths and the weaknesses of the two games. Thematic analysis has been applied to a total of 27 game reviews of space RTS games Homeworld and O.R.B. Codes describing various strong and weak aspects of both games have been extracted from the texts. The codes have been grouped into various categories tradi‑ tionally described in game reviews, such as the story line, the UI, the graphics, etc. Using these codes as a basis, a number of explanations have been suggested as to why the game Homeworld has been more successful than the game O.R.B. The main reasons discovered are that Homeworld was released several years before its competitor and that some of important game features of O.R.B. suffered from poorer technical execution in comparison to equivalent features in Homeworld.

Media Technology and Games - Design & Analysis IT-University of Copenhagen Rued Langgaards vej 7 2300 København S. Tlf. 72185000 www.itu.dk Title: Playable Design Abstract: The computer game industry is currently facing problems on how to structure and manage a production due to the cause of ever growing budgets and manpower required. Methods from other fields have been tried. However, these are not built with the purpose of developing games and do not facilitate the entire production or qualities of a game. We have during the course of the project addressed this matter by devising a method of our own which should enhance the process of creating games. A deeper analysis of current computer game developments identified the main problems to occur in the pre-production which suggests that this is where the point of insertion should happen. We have based our solution on theory from fields such as software engineering, innovation theory and game design theory and supplied these by observation made through experiments where we simulated parts of a game production. The result is the EVE method, which stands for Experimentation, Visualization and Evaluation and is based on principles of creative process control, flexible design in form of prototypes and easily accessible feedback through early testing. ____________________ _____________________ Bo Behrmann Jensen Simon Larsen ____________________ _____________________ Frank Wisnes Thorvald Kingbo Supervisors: Espen Aarseth & Claus Seeberg Friis Circulation: 4 copies Page Count: 212 Project period: September 1, 2006 – March 1, 2007 Chapter 1 - Table of contents Playable Design 1 Table of contents 2 FOREWORD .............................................................................................................................. 8 2.1 READERSHIP .................................................................................................................................. 9 2.2 ACKNOWLEDGEMENT .....................................................................................................................

HISTORY OF HIIGARA: PRELUDE TO THE END TIMES H O M E W O R L D 2 History of Hiigara Prelude to the End Times Hiigaran History from 9525 GSY to 9625 GSY, outlines the period spanning the return of the Exiles to their Homeworld through to those events generally acknowledged as the beginning of the End Times. he following is a chronicle of the events occurring after the return of Tthe Hiigaran Exiles to their home, under the leadership and command of Karan S’Jet [Fig 1.1]. The years immediately following landfall upon Hiigara were, without doubt, among the hardest the Exiles had faced. Those who had been brought to Hiigara in suspended animation, known as Sleepers, arose to the revelation that the planet upon which they had lived for so many years, Kharak, had been destroyed. The world they had been Fig 1.1: brought to, Hiigara, was their only Hiigara and the Angel Moon as seen from chance for the future. orbit. Colonization was a slow and difficult process. The Hiigaran Kiithid had expected to return to paradise, yet they instead found shattered cities left in the wake of the Taiidani evacuation, following the death of their emperor, Riesstiu IV the Second. Even political factions, including members of the Galactic Council, argued that the Exiles could not possibly defend themselves and therefore required assistance from a larger government.
