Catsharks, such as the Swell Shark (Cephaloscyllium ventriosum) from the eastern Pacific and the Chain Catshark (Scyliorhinus retifer) from the western Atlantic, are known to exhibit bright green fluorescence. -

Davis II2 1 University of Helsinki 2 University of Texas at Austin Abstract Since the identification of centipedes in the Maya hieroglyphic corpus and iconography in 1994 by Nikolai Grube and Werner Nahm (Grube & Nahm 1994: 702), epigraphers and iconographers alike have debated whether the serpentine creatures in Maya iconography depict imaginative snakes or centipedes. In this paper we argue that most serpentine creatures with unrealistically depicted heads are neither snakes nor centipedes, but a conflation of both, and even have characteristics of other animals, such as sharks and crocodiles. Thus these creatures should more aptly be designated as zoomorphs, monsters, centiserpents, or dragons. In the present article the topic will be examined using iconographic, epigraphic, zoological, and ethozoological data. It provides a complete list of publication citations as well as a database report containing rearranged subsets of the list sorted by the keyword statistics, extant and extinct genera and species descriptions from the years 2000 to 2017, list of descriptions of extinct and extant species from 2017, parasitology, reproduction, distribution, diet, conservation, and taxonomy. The paper is intended to be consulted for information. In addition, we provide data information on the geographic and depth distribution of newly described species, i.e. the type specimens from the years 1990 to 2017 in a hot spot analysis. New in this year's POTY is the subheader "biodiversity" comprising a complete list of all valid chimaeriform, selachian and batoid species, as well as a list of the top 20 most researched chondrichthyan species. Please note that the content of this paper has been compiled to the best of our abilities based on current knowledge and practice, however, possible errors cannot entirely be excluded. -

Department The University of British Columbia Vancouver 8, Canada ii ABSTRACT • , The swell shark, CephaloscyIlium ventriosum Garman (Scyliorhinidae), is an inshore, reef-dwelling, nocturnal species of the Eastern Pacific rim. Reproduction is oviparous. One ovary is developed. Ova are transported through the coelom by cilia, to a single ostium, which serves both oviducts. Egg formation is usually synchronous in both oviducts, and proceeds generally as in other elasmobranchs, but published and new data are combined in a new description of the egg-forming sequence. Photomicrographs show sperm stored in the shell-secreting tubules of the shell gland. This storage allows the production of fertile eggs in the absence of males for some months after mating. -

En el Golfo de México la mayoría de sus registros corresponden al área nororiental, con registros esporádicos. Reportamos la presencia de la especie y su morfometría con base en dos especímenes macho maduros, 518 y 527 mm de longitud total, capturados en la costa suroccidental del Golfo de México. Palabras clave: Chondrichthyes, Carcharhiniformes, Scyliorhinus, Atlántico, México ABSTRACT The chain catshark, Scyliorhinus retifer, is an oviparous demersal species from the northwestern Atlantic. The southern limit of distribution of this species is not clearly established. In the Gulf of Mexico, most of its records correspond to the northeastern area and are sporadic. The presence of the species and its morphometry is reported here based on two mature male specimens, 518 and 527 mm in total length, captured on the southwestern coast of the Gulf of Mexico. Edited by and Caribbean Chondrichthyans Executive Summary This report from the IUCN Shark Specialist Group includes the first compilation of conservation status assessments for the 282 chondrichthyan species (sharks, rays, and chimaeras) recorded from North American, Central American, and Caribbean waters. The status and needs of those species assessed against the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species criteria as threatened (Critically Endangered, Endangered, and Vulnerable) are highlighted. An overview of regional issues and a discussion of current and future management measures are also presented. A primary aim of the report is to inform the development of chondrichthyan research, conservation, and management priorities for the North American, Central American, and Caribbean region. Results show that 13.5% of chondrichthyans occurring in the region qualify for one of the three threatened categories. These species face an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild (Critically Endangered; 1.4%), a very high risk of extinction in the wild (Endangered; 1.8%), or a high risk of extinction in the wild (Vulnerable; 10.3%). -

This thesis my be made available for loan andlimitedcopying in accordance with the Copyright Act 1968 Cynthia Andrea Awruch January 2007 iii ABSTRACT The draughtboard shark ( Cephaloscyllium laticeps ) is the most common shark on temperate reefs in southeastern Australia. In order to implement adequate management plans its reproductive biology andmovement patterns were studied. Females developeda single external-type ovary with a maximum follicle diameter of 35 mm. Vitellogenesis commencedat 10 mm follicle diameter. The male reproductive tract consistedof pairedtestis with spermatocysts undergoing diametric development. The hormones testosterone, 17-β estradiol, progesterone and 11-ketotestosterone (males only) were examinedto determine their role in reproduction. Testosterone and estradiol showedmajor changes during follicle development. Estradiol increasedas the follicle developed before declining as the follicle reached maturity. Testosterone remained low during the first stages of follicular development and increased as the follicle reached maturity. Progesterone showed a peak just prior to ovulation. Testosterone was the only hormone that variedwith maturity in males andno levels of 11-ketotestosteorne were detected. Females were able to store sperm for at least 15 months andeggs were laidin pairs at monthly intervals. Juveniles hatchedafter 12 months. -
