Birthdays Dave Ratti– Nov. 24 Volume 22 Number 6 Issue 264 November 2009 Events A WORD FROM THE EDITOR Daytona Comic and Toy Show Whew. November 15 Holiday Inn & Suites The state of Florida had four genre events last month. (30 N. Atlantic Avenue They were all interesting. Daytona Beach, Florida Animation Supercon had most of the stars of Futurama Free and the show’s head writer. The convention also had game show Guests: Martin Pierro (writer/publisher Cosmic Comics) host extraordinare Nick Roche. I got to be Nick’s Vanna for his Bill Black (AC Comics publisher) Wheel of Fortune. It was cool to see people playing the new Alex Saviuk (Spider-Man artist) Rock Star with the Beatles. home.att.net/~slawsonm/Comic_Show.html Spooky Empire had a track devoted to writing and literature. Owl Goingback helped organize this track. Max Miami Book Fair Brooks, writer of World War Z, gave a talk which was standing November 8-15 (street fair November 13-15) room only. Membership rates varies, check website Necronomicon was a blast. Thanks to Patty, Steve, and Notable Guests: Joyce Carol Oates Arthur for help with the room party. It was great to see our Jonathan Lethem friends at Stone Hill. The trivia team Arthur and I were on won www.miamibookfair.com this year with a comfortable margin. Great panels, great guests, great company. (Check out the pictures on page 3) ZonaCon Hurricane Who seemed to go well. I attended a fan November 20-22 panel and a writers panel On Friday. There were a lot of Holiday Inn International costumes. The panel on Doctor Who comics was really good 6515 International Drive with writer Tony Lee. Dr. Lynnette Potter talked about the Orlando, FL 32819 mysteries of Lost. I saw a one man show called Moths Ate My $35 for 3 days pre-reg,$45 for 3 days at the door Doctor Who Scarf by Toby Hadoke. Birthdays Barry Letts Dave Ratti– Nov. 24 One of the guests at my first convention, Omnicon II, was Barry Letts. I was told that he was the Executive Producer of Doctor Who. I kind of knew what a producer was from Star Trek. I saw Letts do his Q&A session with his good friend and script editor Terrance Dicks. He was very interesting and funny.     Welcome to the first progress report for the 2021 World Fantasy Convention! We are pressing on, in times of Covid, and continuing to plan a wonderful in person convention in Montréal, Canada. We have a stunning guest list and a superlative team for both planning and the creation of the gathering not to be missed. We will be at the Hôtel Bonaventure, an iconic landmark in the city. The hotel is located in the heart of downtown and just outside the Old Port of Montréal. It is near major roads, right across the street from Gare Centrale, the Montréal train station, and is directly connected to two Metro stations, making it easily accessible for both motorists and public transport users. We will be able to enjoy a lavish 2.5 acres of gardens with streams inhabited by ducks and fish as well as a year-round outdoor heated pool. Our committee is busy excitedly planning a convention that will surpass your every expectation. Our theme will be YA fantasy. The field of young adult fantasy has grown from being popular to becoming a dominant category of 21st century literature, bringing millions of new readers to hundreds of new authors. We are working on a diverse program that will explore this genre that celebrates fantasy fiction in all of its forms: epic, dark, paranormal, urban, and other varieties. We invite members to share what they enjoy, what they have learned, what they have written themselves, and what they hope to see coming in the field of young adult fantasy fiction.
