Christian Spiritual Formation
Christian Spiritual Formation Wilson Teo Regent University The term spiritual formation has been used in many Christian contexts given its recent popularity and yet this term can carry different meanings in these various contexts. The history of this word is traced to Roman Catholicism, and yet it has a different meaning within the Christian evangelical world. This literature review will focus on the various dimensions of spiritual formation such as its definitions, the underpinning theological foundation, the formational elements and the desired outcomes. The paper will also suggest the possible gaps that will require further attention so that the concept of spiritual formation is beneficial to the formation of the Body of Christ. Spiritual Formation has gained much interest and attention in the last two decades. It has been a popular title in many publications and a frequently used term in Christian conferences. The popularity and demand for spiritual formation resources have led to the establishment of spiritual formation institutions to meet the growing requests for teaching and training in this area. Some of these institutions are set up by well-known authors and scholars such as Dallas Willard Center for Christian Spiritual Formation and the Renovare Institute for Christian Formation. The interest for spiritual formation has gone beyond pastors and believers in local churches to the academic sphere where graduate institutions have partnered with the Renovare Institute to recognize spiritual formation modules as part of their postgraduate level programs (Renovare, n.d.). These highly recognized academic institutions’ engagements in spiritual formation reinforced its current importance and value to the Body of Christ, especially for ecclesial leaders. -

I wrote this essay in the spring of 1992 as my undergraduate honors thesis. I hope that the intervening ten years and my graduate education have helped me produce more sophisticated, better written works of history. But since I posted this thesis on-line several years ago, several websites have linked to the essay as a useful resource on the strike, labor history, and Calvin Coolidge. Kenneth Grider1 When one reads secondary treatments of Wesley they repeatedly come across disclaimers of him being a “systematic” theologian. If an alternative characterization is listed, among the more common is “practical” theologian. One of our goals in this paper is to demonstrate the warrant for such a construal of Wesley as a practical theologian. A more important goal is to overcome prevalent caricatures of what this entails. For example, it often appears that classification of Wesley as a practical theologian is intended to imply that he “dabbles” in theology when it fits his pastoral or evangelistic purposes but does not take doctrinal reflection seriously. We hope to demonstrate that this and related implications are distortions of Wesley’s practical theology. To make this case we must place Wesley’s practical theology in its historical context. Until recently, such a contextual consideration has not only been lacking but almost impossible. Given the dominance, in the modern era, of the Western university model of Systematic Theology—with its accompanying application-discipline of Practical Theology, earlier understandings of “practical theology” were largely forgotten or distorted. However, this reigning model of Practical Theology is being called into question in recent discussions of theological methodology. These discussions have spurred historical investigation into earlier understandings of “practical theology.” They have also spawned calls for reformulating Practical Theology and, perhaps, returning to a model of theology per se as a practical endeavour. -

1 A Guide to Contemporary Faith Wes Campbell, November 2011 Introduction Our time presents a crisis for Christian faith. In our situation which some describe as ‘post-Christian’ or post-Christendom, the challenge reaches into the heart of faith, challenging God in the name of ‘atheism’1. The crisis produces both pastoral and intellectual challenges, as the Christian community seeks to chart a way in our contemporary world. Often it is suggested that there are but two ways of responding, each offering an extreme position: either, a return to pre-modern (fundamentalist) ways of thinking, or, an unqualified (progressive) acceptance of modernist (or postmodernist) modes of thought. It sometimes seems as if we are being required to choose between two different fundamentalisms. However, as Christians grapple with these challenges, we are faced with an even more fundamental challenge: the challenge of God who speaks to our situation, bringing a crisis which challenges, judges and renews the world2. This paper is a brief response to our contemporary situation. Our main interest is to assist people to hear Jesus Christ’s call to discipleship in the 21st century. Here we will be reminded of the basic commitments made as the Uniting Church was formed. The discussion here will offer some pointers for the task of interpreting and understanding the Christian faith now3. Understanding Christian Faith From the beginning understanding biblical faith has been a controversial and challenging matter. The most obvious reason for this is that faith itself emerged from challenging and controversial circumstances. For example, the faith of Israel has its early origins in the escape of Hebrew slaves from Egypt, led by Moses. -

BRIGHAM The following bibliography attempts, first, to present a historical sketch of every newspaper printed in the United States from 1690 to 1820; secondly, to locate all files found in the various libraries of the country; and thirdly, to give a complete check list of the issues in the library of the American Antiquarian Society. The historical sketch of each paper gives the title, the date of establishment, the name of the editor or publisher, the fre- quency of issue and the date of discontinuance. It also attempts to give the exact date of issue when a change in title or name of publisher or frequency of publication occurs. In locating the files to be found in various libraries, no at- tempt is made to list every issue. In the case of common news- papers which are to be found in many libraries, only the longer files are noted, with a description of their completeness. Rare newspapers, which are known by only a few scattered issues, are minutely listed. The check list of the issues in the library of the American Antiquarian Society follows the style of the Library of Con- gress "Check List of Eighteenth Century Newspapers," and records all supplements, missing issues and mutilations. The arrangement is alphabetical by states and towns. Towns are placed according to their present State location. For convenience of alphabetization, the initial "The" in the titles of papers is disregarded. Papers are considered to be of folio size, unless otherwise stated. -

MARY KELLOGG: AESTHETIC DANCE VISIONARY By Ellen Knight1 When Winchester’s Mary Kellogg danced, all the Boston papers agreed, she was a vision of exquisite elegance and grace. When Kellogg designed a dance production, her audiences were transported to lands of poetry, myth, and legend. Virtually forgotten today, Kellogg held a remarkable place in American dance history. She not only enlisted Boston and New York society leaders–and those in Winchester as well–as patrons for her dances but also got the younger generations onto the stage, popularizing aesthetic dance as perhaps none of her predecessors had. Kellogg was not the first exponent of modern dance. Before her were Isadora Duncan, Loie Fuller, Ruth St. Denis, and Genevieve Stebbins (with whom she was reportedly most often compared) who espoused fluid, free-form, natural movements and the wearing of flowing Grecian and exotic dance costumes, but they were rarely seen in Boston. Staging her productions locally and working with local talent, Kellogg was unusually admired in Boston. She made headlines for her dances,2 using her art not only to charm audiences but also to support humanitarian causes. And it all began in Winchester, giving the town its own place in American dance history. THE MUSICIAN Mary Kellogg (1881-1952) about 1911 Kellogg was three years old when her family moved to Winchester, taking up residence at 86 Church St. Her banker-broker father, George G. Kellogg, was among the originators of the Winchester Golf Club and the Country Club, and it was as a golfer that Kellogg’s name first appeared in the local newspaper.3 But that soon changed. -

A Sociology of Progressive Religious Groups Why Liberal Religious Groups Cannot Get Together A Talk for Sea of Faith Yorkshire, 22 September 2007, Bradford Given by Adrian Worsfold Schisms are normally carried out by traditionalists or conversionists over what is called a "presenting issue". This is not the question here but the inability of liberal groups to get together. Indeed liberals tend not to split off as groups, but they do move out as individuals. When Theophilus Lindsey rejected the 39 Articles of the Church of England and set up the first named Unitarian Church in 1774, he hoped for an exodus of Anglicans to join his new Arian based movement (he followed Samuel Clarke's Arian revision of the Book of Common Prayer). An exodus did not happen. The Arians stayed within the Church of England, and Essex Church as it was called became absorbed into the liberalising Presbyterian movement. Did not these Presbyterians split then, long before? Well, when the Presbyterians broke away from the Church of England they were fiercely Puritan and very trinitarian, with full confidence in the Bible alone to uphold Calvinist doctrine. So this too was an example of an evangelical breakaway. That they became liberal was an unintended consequence of the original Puritan intention, and they were later boosted by ideological liberals (who were also biblical literalists, reading a unitarian doctrine straight off the gospels as, indeed, the New Testament contains no doctrine of the Trinity, only its possibility). So what is this about liberal groups and then not being able to be inclusive of one another? We first need to know what groups we are talking about, what they organise for and how they function. -

The CoH is currently the largest church in the world with a predominantly gay and lesbian congregation. This work tells the history of the church which is located in Dallas, Texas. The thesis employs over 48 sources to help tell the church’s rich history which includes a progressive Christian philosophy, an important contribution to the fight for gay civil rights, and fine examples of courage through social activism. This work makes a contribution to gay history as well as civil rights history. It also adds to the cultural and social history which concentrates on the South and Southwestern regions of the United States.
