Pacific Affairs: Volume 85, No. 4 – December 2012 This reordering of events in the chronology I am arguing for is hugely significant from a political point of view. Putting the agitation for Khalistan before the 1984 Operation Bluestar, apart from being factually wrong, might suggest that Operation Bluestar was an action to stop the Khalistan movement and almost provides legitimacy to the army action. However, putting the agitation for Khalistan after 1984 is not only historically accurate; it also signifies that it is the Operation Bluestar itself that alienated the Sikhs so deeply from India that a section of them launched the movement for Khalistan to secede from India. Although clearly Jakobsh does not offer any justification for Operation Bluestar, her unintended placing of events in the order that I have questioned here provides support to a likely, and indeed, common misinterpretation of the order of events. Her discussion on the Sikhs and the internet is absolutely fascinating and refreshing in raising challenging questions about the potentialities of the internet in not only opening new spaces for discussion on taboo subjects but also in creating new forms of authority in articulating what Sikhism is. This book, a scholarly work of high quality, is written in the spirit of critical reverence for the Sikh tradition and deserves wide circulation and readership. Khowa sect, Vaishnavism, The category as initiated by June McDaniel in her work is applied for the case study of the Assam, Kamakhya Bengal region in India. The new category marks a sharp distinction from the classical Tantra. The study attempts to explore the category further and expand it into the area of Assam in India. The Rati Khowa sect grew after the schism in the popular Vaishnavite movement in Assam. The sect is of esoteric nature which displays the amalgamation of Vaishnavite and Tantric elements. It could be seen in a few districts of Assam. The rituals practised by the sect comes under the left- hand path of Tantra and thus are not approved by the societal norms. Rituals are open only to the participants practised in secret and excluding the outsiders completely. The study will attempt to view the Rati Khowa sect as a folk tantric category. In the process, it will also examine that the category of folk Tantra in Assam is dissimilar to the category of folk Tantra in Bengal as viewed by June McDaniel. Introduction The Indic religious setting comprises distinct traditions quite peculiar in their understanding and way of life. -

Received: 5 December 2018; Accepted: 10 February 2019; Published: 18 February 2019 Abstract: This article describes the narratives and projections that shaped the contested character of Hardwar and the river Ganges as symbols par excellence of the Hindus’ claim to India’s sacred geography over the last two hundred years. It deliberates on the tactics and practices through which Hardwar’s ancient and legendary status has been employed to assert Hindu identity and territorial claims vis-à-vis the colonial administrators, but also to exclude the country’s Muslim and Christian populace. The purifying, divine land of Hardwar enabled the nationalist imagination and struggle for a Hindu India, even as it was instituted as a site for the internal purification of Hinduism itself, to mirror its glorious past. The article describes the contests and claims, based on religion and class, as well as the performance of socio-economic and existential anxieties that the sacred quality of Hardwar and the river Ganges continues to authorize and enable in post-colonial India. For this, we draw particularly on the Kanwar Mela, an annual event in which millions of mostly poor young men carry water from the river Ganges on foot, and often over long distances. We deliberate on the significance of the sacred water, rituals, and the journey in reinforcing these pilgrims’ perceptions of the self, and their moral claims over the nation and its territory. -
