The Familiar Uncommon Spectator: Jack London's Female Watchers In The Game and the Abysmal Brute Scott Emmert In recent decades, Jack London's significant contributions to American literature have gained an increasing amount of critical recognition. Among these acknowledged contributions is his status as the first "serious" writer of sports fiction in America. Biographer James Lundquist, for example, notes that London "was one ofthe first writers to take sports seriously as the raw material for novels and stories" (179), and critic Michael Oriard goes further, identify ing London the "father of American sports fiction" meant for adult readers (Dreaming 9). Specifically, London's accomplishments as a writer ofsports lit erature rest mainly on his boxing fiction. 1 As one biography puts it, "London virtually invented the modern prizefight story" (Labor and Reesman 157 n.7), this invention being represented by the short stories "A Piece ofSteak (1909) and "The Mexican" (1910) and by the short novels The Game (1905) and The Abysmal Brute (1913). Always mindful of his audience and of his sales, how ever, London crafted this inventive prizefight fiction so as not to offend his readers with the brutality ofboxing, a sport so violent and decadent that it was deemed unfit as a subject of serious literature until London "gave it literary respectability" (Oriard, Dreaming 9). When describing what happens inside the square ring, London seeks a measure of respectability for boxing by tempering his descriptions ofviolent action with a compassionate depiction ofhumanity. London's naturalistic box ing fictions, in the way of most naturalist stories, seek to evoke the reader's sympathy for protagonists at the mercy of fo~ces beyond their control. -

Jack London’un Eserlerinde Sınıf Çatışması Jack London’ın Eserlerinde Sınıf Çatışması1 Ogün NAZLI2 ORCID ID: 0000-0002-1230-6643 Öz: Bu çalışma ile Jack London’ın eserlerinde sınıfsal mücadeleler ve sınıf çatışmaları incelenmiş; işçi ve sermaye sınıfı arasındaki durumun gösterilmesi amaçlanmıştır. İşçi sınıfının sermaye sınıfı karşısında takındığı tavır, örgütlenme; sendikalaşma ve grevleri yaratarak çeşitli toplumsal hareketlere neden olmuştur. Bu iki sınıfın yüz yıllar boyunca çatışmasına neden olan faktörler London’ın eserlerinde, kapitalist sistem eleştirisi temeline dayandırılarak anlatılmıştır. Sanayi Devrimi’nin etkilerinin yoğun bir şekilde hissedildiği 19.yüzyılın sosyal ve ekonomik yapısını, o dönemin edebi eserlerinde inceleyebilmek oldukça mümkündür. Bu anlamda, işçi sınıfı içinde büyüyen Jack London’ın yaşamının ve eserlerinin incelenmesi, o dönem hakkında önemli çıkarımlar yapılmasına olanak sağlayacaktır. JACK LONDON, THE SAILOR The water around him beckoned Jack London at an early age. Growing up, mostly in Oakland, California, Jack London always had San Francisco Bay close by. This provided him the opportunity to experience adventures on the bay that inevitably led to adventures in far off waters. The main source for Jack London’s early experiences in sailing is found in his writing. The book John Barleycorn is the main source. Here he mentions sailing a skiff on the bay at age fourteen. The skiff was a large rowboat with a centerboard and a small sail. In San Francisco Bay the young London observed ships from foreign countries which triggered a yearning to experience the adventures he envisioned were to be found in other parts of the world. THE RAZZLE DAZZLE Jack London’s next sailing adventures were on the Razzle Dazzle, a sloop for which he paid oyster pirate, French Frank, three hundred dollars that he had borrowed from his wet nurse, Virginia Prentiss. With his own vessel, London now felt tremendously free and wasted no time in raiding the oyster beds with his one-man crew, Spider Healy. The oyster beds were on government land that had been taken over by the Southern Pacific Railroad and leased to oyster growers. London sailed the Razzle Dazzle until the mainsail burned, then he teamed up with young Scratch Nelson on his boat and continued as an oyster pirate. Eventually, London realized it was only a matter of time before he would be either caught or killed, so he agreed to become a deputy for the Fish Patrol operating out of Benicia. -

It was not a law at the time I killed Professor Haskell. It was not passed until after I received my life- sentence. And this is the very point: my life-sentence gave me my status under this law which had not yet been written on the books. And it is because of my status of lifetimer that I am to be hanged for battery committed on the guard Thurston. -

The word was that Kevin had to be at his brother’s wedding instead. It definitely added to the myth that I, and many other people as well, had built into our heads that Mr. Shields was some kind of mysterious recluse whose appearances could never be bargained on. The story of Kevin’s band My Bloody Valentine, and their demise, has up to this point sounded closer to folklore than something that happened less than a decade ago. Like a twisted version of the game “telephone”, My Bloody Valentine fans have perpetuated the tallest of tales ranging from master tapes of unreleased albums being set afire, to band reunions in far dark warehouses in Berlin. When The Icarus Line had the opportunity of again opening for Primal Scream, it would be a tour with them across the United Kingdom. When we encountered the band soundchecking on the first day in Glasgow, it occurred to me while I stared at them onstage, that between Kevin’s time in My Bloody Valentine, Mani’s in The Stone Roses, and even Bobby’s stint in The Jesus and Mary Chain, not to mention The Scream themselves, I was witnessing the composers of a good portion of my record collection back home. -

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. -
