NeuroQuantology | December 2013 | Volume 11 | Issue 4 | Page 544-572 544 Maraldi and Krippner., Biopsychosocial approach to creative dissociation A Biopsychosocial Approach to Creative Dissociation: Remarks on a Case of Mediumistic Painting Everton de Oliveira Maraldi* and Stanley Krippner† ABSTRACT A category of religious experience that still preserves much of the original blurring and fusion between art and religion is mediumistic or spirit painting. Performed by spiritualist mediums in different locations around the world, this form of religious experience is characterized by the supposed ability of an individual to serve as an instrument for deceased artists to continue to perform their works. Little scientific research has been conducted concerning this topic. We present a brief analysis of painting activity performed by Jacques Andrade, a Brazilian medium. Born in 1945, Andrade, who has been active in the Brazilian Kardecist movement for many years, has dedicated most of his religious life to mediumistic painting at his center (The Leonardo da Vinci Salon of Mediumistic Art). Data about the medium were collected on several different occasions, from 1998 to 2013, and include psychophysiological measures (hand temperature, heart rate, bilateral skin conductance, muscle tension, and electrical brain activity), psychological measures (Dissociative Experiences Scale, Tellegen Absorption Scale, Revised Transliminality Scale, and Childhood Trauma Questionnaire), artistic material, observational data (photographs of paintings, observations of the medium in action), and some basic socio-demographic and biographical information. Basically we sought to evaluate: a) general aspects of the painting technique and style employed by the medium, b) the main features of his pictorial production, and c) the general behavior shown by the medium during the mediumistic activity. -

THE MEDIUM’S MEDIUM SPIRITUALIST ART PRACTICES FROM THE TURN OF THE CENTURY AND BEYOND MARIAN SPORE BUSH c 1944 THE GALLERY OF EVERYTHING 29.09.19 - 24.11.19 4 CHILTERN STREET, W1 FRIEZE MASTERS [ STAND G20 ] 03.10.19 - 06.10.19 REGENTS PARK, NW1 The advent of spiritualist art-making in the 19th and early 20th century is emerging as an important addition to the art historical canon. For many years, the strange scribblings, obscure symmetries, figurative imaginings and floral bouquets transmitted from so- called other worlds, were overlooked - even ignored - by the cultural mainstream. In recent years there has been a significant shift. Exhibitions of Hilma af Klint and Emma Kunz at the Serpentine Galleries, and Georgiana Houghton at the Courtauld Institute of Art, have revealed the impact of Spiritualism far beyond Kazimir Malevich and Piet Mondrian. Yet these high-profile narratives remain silent on the spiritual essentiality of the material, focussing instead on feminism and abstraction. This critical omission denies art history one of its most radical and forgotten steps. For it was the visuals of Spiritualism which switched artists across turn-of-the-century Europe and America onto a new improvised methodology. Opening on 29th September 2019, The Gallery of Everything will present THE MEDIUM’S MEDIUM: a curated survey of late 19th and early 20th century visual Spiritualism. This broad examination of rare historical drawings and paintings will include over twenty artists at its booth at Frieze Masters, alongside a contemporary installation inside the Marylebone space. Rather than impose a fixed narrative, the project will encourage viewer’s to experience the material on its own terms, allowing the work to define its own meaning (as it did to its makers). -

But in all their cases, the occult aspect of their creativity has been actively suppressed in the canonical story of modern art. Given that spirit paintings have exerted a decisive influence on modern art, there is a certain confusion on what spirit painting exactly is. -

Since Dubuffet’s codification of Art Brut around 1945, the Outsider has been identified by cultural isolation, mental distance and a requisite discovery by some cultural insider, paternal or exploitative. -

He enjoyed the support of the London Spiritualist Alliance and other eminent persons, but psychical researchers came to believe he was fraudulent. This led to a split in the infant SPR, not repaired for a century. The chapter below is taken from his “official” biography. He was not the first Western Spiritualist to visit India – Olcott was living there from 1879, and James Peebles had included India in his travels. —~§~— IT had long been a cherished desire on Mr. Eglinton’s part to visit India—the reputed home and birthplace of the occult sciences. Theosophy and its alleged marvels were then just coming to the front, and, in common with many others, he wished, if possible, to come to some definite conclusion with regard to the subject. The general verdict was then, and for the matter of that is still, the old Scotch one of “Not Proven,” but the glamour of mystery thrown around the phenomena, and the unbounded promises which had drawn many into Theosophist circles, did not escape Mr. -

Je serai bref sur la vie et l'œuvre de ce peintre, le plus célèbre sans doute des artistes médiumniques, car de nombreux travaux lui ont été consacrés, et j'évoquerai surtout l'analyse qu'Osty propose de sa pratique. Augustin Lesage Mineur de son état, Augustin Lesage n'a reçu aucune formation artistique et ne s'est jamais intéressé à l'art. Un jour de 1911 - Lesage a alors trente-cinq ans - il est à son travail, dans un étroit boyau, quand se produit l'événement qui va bouleverser sa vie. Une voix, soudain, lui dit : " Un jour tu seras peintre. " Le jour suivant, la voix lui parle à nouveau. Il est terrorisé à l'idée de redescendre dans la mine. Quelque temps après, comme il assiste à une séance spirite, il s'essaie à l'écriture automatique et reçoit - via sa propre main, qui échappe à son contrôle - un message qui lui confirme cette vocation. Aussitôt, il entreprend de réaliser des dessins qui lui sont dictés par les esprits, puis, très vite, il s'essaie à sa première toile, une toile immense, qu'il va réaliser de façon automatique, sous la dictée de son guide. -
