Una prostituta, además de buscarle los encargos, le hace el trabajo sucio a Chi-Ming. Pero ella vive apasionadamente enamorado de él, aunque nunca se hayan conocido en persona. Lai conocerá a una mujer, Karen Mok, con la que comenzará una relación y que, con el tiempo, coincidirá con la pros- tituta y les preparará una cita en la que Chi-Ming le confesará sus deseos de retirarse. Empezó en la industria como guionista y asis- tente de producción y en 1988 debuta como director imponiéndose rápidamente como l'enfant terrible de la cinematografía local. As Tears Go By, además de su primera colaboración con Maggie Cheung como protagonista, se presenta en la Semana de la Crítica del Festival de Cine de Cannes 1989 y el triunfo es rotundo. Los dos años siguientes los pasará rodando en las más lejanas regiones de China un magistral relato sobre artes marciales, Las Cenizas del Tiempo, Premio a la Mejor Fotografía en el Festival de Venecia de 1994. Durante una pausa de dos meses en la post-producción de este film, rueda Chungking Express, enseguida un éxito internacio- nal. A continuación, filma un largometraje que él mismo define como "experimental", Los Ángeles Caídos. Sus dos siguientes traba- jos van a competición en el Festival de Cine de Cannes. Happy To- gether, se proyecta en la edición de 1997 y Deseando amar se pre- senta en el certamen del año 2000, donde recibirá la Palma de Oro, además de estar seleccionada para el Oscar al Mejor Film Extranje- ro. Sus últimas películas se han rodado en Estados Unidos, My Blueberry Nights con la cantante Norah Jones, y La dama de Shan- gai, de la que sólo copia el título de Welles, que está en fase de pre- producción. It ~xp l ores the particular performative and cinematic techniques found in his work. Through the close examination of these techniques this thesis suggests how Wong creates conditions for spectators to engage bodily with performing bodies on screen. The thesis treats film performance as a matter of film style, seeing it as always constructed through combinations of the performing body, the camera and the edit. It approaches performance on film as a filmic body; an amalgam of performative and cinematic techniques inextricably melded together. This thesis sets up fragmentation as the key trait of Wong's film style, central to his filmic bodies and to the way spectators may engage affectively with them. In particular, the thesis addresses how multiple levels of fragmentation, both performative and cinematic, operate in concert. Visual, temporal and spatial tragmentation are analysed as central components of Wong's filmic bodies in this regard. Further, this stylistic analysis suggests a notion of affective intertextuality, based on stylistic connections between his films, as vital to how spectators can engage bodily with his filmic bodies.

Born in 1962, Chan produced his first movie, NEWS ATTACK in 1989, and directed his first film, ALAN AND ERIC: BETWEEN HELLO AND GOODBYE in 1991, which was awarded Best Film of the year by the Directors’ Guild of Hong Kong. It also won Best Actor at the Hong Kong Film Awards for his friend and mentor Eric Tsang. Chan was a co-founder of United Filmmakers Organization (UFO) during the early 1990s which produced a solid track record of box office and critical hits in Hong Kong, including his own: TOM, DICK & HARRY (1993), HE'S A WOMAN, SHE'S A MAN (1994) and COMRADES, ALMOST A LOVE STORY (1997). HE'S A WOMAN, SHE'S A MAN was a summer blockbuster hit in Hong Kong, for which Chan was awarded Best Film and Best Director of the year by the Directors’ Guild of Hong Kong. COMRADES was voted one of the Ten Best movies of 1997 by Time Magazine, and swept a record breaking nine Hong Kong Film Awards, a record it still holds today. Subsequently, Chan moved to Hollywood and directed Kate Capshaw, Ellen Degeneres and Tom Selleck in the comedy THE LOVE LETTER (1999) for Steven Spielberg's Dreamworks SKG. Emanuele Sacchi - www.mymovies.it Nella Shanghai di fine '800 i bordelli più rinomati erano chiamati le Case dei Fiori. Per ogni Casa una diversa tenutaria e una diversa "insegnante". Ognuna con i suoi segreti, ognuna con le sue ambizioni, intenta a tessere trame pur di arrivare a soddisfare i propri desideri. Con 'Flowers of Shanghai' Hou Hsiao-hsien porta il suo linguaggio e la sua idea di cinema a un livello di splendore difficilmente eguagliabile persino da se stesso. Non esiste montaggio e la macchina da presa resta più o meno immota, attendendo che i personaggi entrino ed escano dal suo campo visivo; ma se questa è la cifra stilistica di Hou Hsiao-hsien anche in Città dolente e Il maestro burattinaio, in Flowers la narrazione si piega ulteriormente alle esigenze dell'inquadratura. Le sequenze si susseguono con una somiglianza straniante, aperte e chiuse da dissolvenze in nero che paiono nuvole di fumo, come fossero emanazioni dirette dell'oppio che le cortigiane e i loro clienti fumano in continuazione, mentre si scambiano promesse d'amore o menzogne delittuose. Ancor più radicale la scelta di Hou sulla luce, con gli interni kubrickianamente illuminati solo dalla luce delle lampade a olio: si diffonde così un'aura giallastra che esalta i lineamenti delle splendide cortigiane e le immerge in un'atmosfera onirica che ben si può sussumere nelle note dei solenni archi di Yoshihiro Hanno.

    CHAPTER 1 Ethnic Ghosts in the Asian Shell Racial Crossover and Transnational Cinema The growing homogenizing and integrative forces of global capitalism have facilitated the emergence of a pan-Asian popular culture during the last two decades of the twentieth century. While East Asia has been developing into a new hub of corporate capitalism, Asian people, images, and cultural prod- ucts also simultaneously cross national borders and infi ltrate everyday life in the region in multiple areas. Japan’s days as an economic superpower may be gone, but its role as a transnational cultural trendsetter in Asia and the Pacifi c Rim—in cutting-edge music, art, fashion, design, TV drama, comics, and other pop culture categories of every stripe—still has lingering effects. Hong Kong cinema had its heyday in the mid-1980s and early 1990s, edging out Hollywood in East and Southeast Asian markets. The pop stars of Hong Kong have already become household names for many Asians. Korean fi lms, as well as TV dramas and pop singers, are currently sweeping Asia and even the Asian communities on the other side of the Pacifi c, and could potentially take over the dominant position once occupied by Hong Kong popular culture (Park 2004), though there are also signs to show that this Korean wave is on the wane abroad (Kim 2008). The rapid growth of the mainland Chinese economy and its huge consumer market encourage its neighbors’ cultural industries to focus on the transnationalization, or “Asianization,” of marketing and advertising. This chapter discusses the notion of Asia by looking at the (im)possibility of representing an Asian identity in popular fi lms.
