Youth Advocacy Nepal (YAN) is a campaign-based human rights organization dedicated to protect and promote the human rights and fundamental freedoms. Initiated by a group of energetic and active young people, it was registered in District Administration Office (DAO), Kathmandu and affiliated in Social Welfare Council (SWC) in 2013. Being the right-based approach organization, it empowers the young people to claim and exercise their rights to live a dignified life. It also encourages and engages young people in the protection and promotion of human rights of all. Broadly, it works in the field of Human Rights, Democracy, Peace and Sustainable Development. It includes Youth Development as a cross-cutting area. Under these working areas, the major functions of this organization are awareness raising, knowledge generation, capacity building, networking and policy advocacy. Since its inception, it has been focusing its activities throughout the Nepal as a National NGO.

YAN envisions a society where human rights and fundamental freedoms of all are respected, protected, promoted and fully implemented everywhere without any discrimination.

Major performed activities on monthly basis are briefly described below.

January

1. Youth Human Rights Workshop

Youth Human Rights Workshop was organized at Youth Advocacy Nepal (YAN) with the facilitators Binaya Karki, Tirtharaj Koirala, Diwakar Uprety, Bikash Kc and Geeta Chaudhary. The core objective of the program was to educate the youths about the concept of human rights, its principles, its evolution and issues related to human rights. There were around 20 youths in the workshop who were randomly selected from Google Form. The workshop also had the guest presence of Human Rights Activist Mr. Badri Pd. Shiwakoti and Mr. Hari Pd. Gyawali from National Human Rights Commission of Nepal.

2. Dialogue on "Increasing Women Violence and Accountability of the State Youth Advocacy Nepal and Sankalpa Nepal on January 21st jointly organized a dialogue on "Increasing Women Violence and Accountability of the State" at women's Commission of Nepal. Hon.Member of NHRC Mohana Ansari,Secretary of National Womens Commission, Mr. Anil Thakur, ASP Kiran Rana, Pinki Gurung, Lilly Thapa, Jitram Lama, Bhawani Pd. Kharel, Santa Laxmi Shrestha, Motilal Nepali,Bhim Pariyar, Dr. Chatra Amatya, Tara Bhandari and many more were present in the dialogue. This dialogue demanded the government of Nepal to disclose the findings of the report by High Level Investigation Committee of Nirmala Panta Case.

3. Youth Dialogue in Janakpur, Provience No. 2

Youth Advocacy Nepal (YAN) conducted a one day Youth Dialogue in Provience No. 2. The dialogue was coordinated by Mr. Diwakar Uprety, Campaign Coordinator of YAN. The dialogue had the presence of more than 40 youths from different background. Pradip Raj Kadel, CDO Dhanusa, Youth Activist Mr. Susil Karna, Human Rights Activist, Indrajeet Sahani, Civil Society Muralimanohar Jha, Advocate, Bijay Kumar Singh and Yuba Chandan Karna and Youth Activist Dhirendra Kumar Jha were present in the program and kept their valuable words on the issue. The program was held in Dhanusha Scout Building.

4. Candle Lighting on Martyrs Day Nepal celebrates Martyrs day on 16th Magh (January 30) in the memory of mainly four martyrs (Dharma Bhakta Mathema, Gangalal Shrestha, Dashrath Chand, and Shukraraj Shastri)and to respect all who fought and died to establish Democracy and rights of people. To honor and respect of all martyrs, Youth Advocacy Nepal (YAN) conducted the candle Lighting event at Maitighar Mandala, Kathmandu on 30 January 2019. The program was facilitated by Monika Adhikari the co-coordinator of that event. It was started form 6 pm till 7pm with more than 70 energetic Youth form different background. Event was started with national anthem followed by one minute silence for remembrance of martyrs. After that, lighting candle was inagurated by Mr.Naren Khatiwada, president of YAN and other participate joined him. Finally, the event was concluded by Mr.Khatiwada. 1. Youth Human rights college workshop in Pentagon college

Youth Advocacy Nepal (YAN) organized the Youth Human Rights workshop (YHRW) in 15th February 2019 at Pentagon College, Tinkune Kathmandu. There was the participation of more than fifty students on this workshop. On this college workshop Mr Binay Karki and Tirtha Raj Koirala were the facilitators. The main objective of the program was to aware the young people about the basic principles of Human Rights, International Practices ,National and International laws being surrounded by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). The workshop was fruitful as it was able to address the queries of the students regarding human rights VS fundamental rights, different stages of human rights nationally and internationally and about the current available rights of every Nepali people.

2. Youth Democracy Camp (YDC)

Youth Advocacy Nepal (YAN) in partnership with VSO Nepal, UK Aid and SADED Nepal organized a three days “Youth Democracy Camp (YDC) from 17-19 February 2019 at Kotdanda, lalitpur. During the three days program, participants gained various knowledge and perspectives regarding democracy, human rights, governance and volunteerism. The YDC was successfully conducted with the participation of 25 youths including the volunteer of ICS along with seven resource persons during the three days period. During the Camp, Mr.Badri Pd. Shiwakoti, Prof. Krishna Pd. Khanal, Mr. Tanka Aryal from FHI360, Dr. Uddap Pyakurel, Mr. Keshav Dahal, Mr. Suran Maharjan and Mr. Sudhir Bhattarai from VSO Nepal were the resource person. The camp helped the youths to obtain the knowledge about these topics which will now help the youths in being responsible citizens of the country. Through this knowledge on democracy, human rights, good governance, youth rights, volunteerism and advocacy strategies the youths have felt empowered and seek to bring positive change in the society.

March

1. Nepal Youth Summit

Youth Advocacy Nepal (YAN), in collaboration with ActionAid Nepal, Brighten University and University of London jointly in partnership with Tribhuvan University, HomeNet Nepal, Nepal Mahila Yekata Samaj, CSRC, among others organized "National Youth Seminar" at Afla House, New Baneshor on March 1st. The chief guest of the program was Rrt. Honorable Ganesh Prasad Timalsina, Chairman of National Assembly. The seminar ended declaring the 12 points demands.

2. Mens march

On the occasion of international women's day Youth Advocacy Nepal along with other like-minded organizations conducted a Mens March from Jawlakhel to Patan Durbar Square. On this rally more the 100 people participated from various organizations and background. This ralley was organized in order to support the Women's issue and their rights. This rally was organized against the violence faced by women and child.

3. Youth demonstration against gender based violence

Youth Advocacy Nepal (YAN),organized a Youth Demonstration against Gender- based violence at Maitigharmandala on the occasion of International Women Day - 2019. In this demonstration the interns and volunteers of Youth Advocacy Nepal prepared their own Play Cards with various slogans and messages. There was the presence of around 45 young people from YAN along with other organizations. Mr. Naren Khatiwoda, President of Youth Advocacy Nepal addressed the youth and stated that its everyone's role to protect the rights of women and Girls. He also stated that if we all work hand in hand to end this growing violence against women it will remain as a history and that everyone will find peace and harmony. The interns from Youth Advocacy Nepal presented their poems and songs on the issues of women and why this needs to end right away.

4. Photo with slogan competition (International women's day)

Photo with slogan competition was conducted by Youth Advocacy Nepal where the Interns and Volunteers along with the members of the YAN family participated. This competition was conducted in order to raise voice against the violence against women and girl child. The purpose of the competition was to raise voice in the social media to aware the people of the society. For this competition there was more than 30 participants who presented their art and talent in form of pictures and words. The competition was held from March 6-10.

5. Youth consultation on education transformation

Youth Advocacy Nepal (YAN) and NCE Nepal in partnership with ASPBE jointly organized a Youth Consultation on Education Transformation on 18th March 2019 at Nepal Tourism Board . During this consultation process, a total of two working paper related to youth and education were presented ahead of Youth consultation on education transformation tofacilitate the consultation smoothly. One was presented by Dr. Hari Prasad Lamshal,Joint Secretary at Ministry of Education and second one by Mr. Shubhendra ManShrestha, vice president of NCE Nepal. Presenting the paper entitled Empoweringpeople and ensuring inclusiveness and equality in the context of SDGs by Lamshal, said that there was a need to challenge perceptions of the world and encourages youngpeople to act for a more just and equal society at local, national and international levelthrough the process of interactive learning, critical thinking, debate, action and reflection.

6. Youth Dialogue on eradicating cast discrimination and role of media

Youth Advocacy Nepal organized a youth dialogue on Eradicating cast based discrimination and role of media on 29th of March with around 30 youths. This dialogue was conducted in the presence of Mr. Sushil Darnal, journalist at RASASA, he delivered the speech on the role of Media to eliminate caste-based discrimination and untouchability. The participants of the youth Dialogue discussed with Mr. Darnal on the current issues related with cast based discrimination and the role that they can play to end this form of discrimination. Mr. Darnal presented various case stories on the roles that the media has played to end this form of discrimination.

April 1. Public demonstration regarding Public Education

Youth Advocacy Nepal jointly with NCE Nepal organized a public demonstration regarding public education in Maitigharmandala on 24th of April. In this demonstration program more than 40 participants were present and everyone of them stood tall with some messages and slogans promoting the importance of Public Education. Shuvendra Mann Shrestha from NCE Nepal, Narendra Khatiwoda from Youth Advocacy Nepal and Narayan Kadariya kept their short note speech on the importance of Public Education and also asked every individuals to work towards promoting the quality of public education in Nepal. 1. Dialogue on Human rights commission act 2068

Youth Advocacy Nepal in collaboration with Human Rights National Magnmeet organized a one day dialogue on Human Rights Commission act 2068 at SAAP Falcha on 13th May. In this program representatives from various organizations as well as civil society representatives participated and put forward their words regarding the Human Rights Commission Act Bill. The main voice of every representatives present in the program was that the National Human Rights Commission needs to be free from any kinds of pressure and allow to work in open environment.

2. Citizen vigilance against Nepal government

On behalf of civil society, delivering speech at “Citizen Vigilance” for pressurizing government of Nepal to correct the bills regarding National Human Rights Commission, Media Council and NGOs , which was organized by Joint Citizen Campaign and Federation of Journalists jointly at New Baneshor, Kathmandu.

1. Youth Dialogue on role of youth in strengthening public education

A youth dialogue was conducted in Youth Advocacy Nepal hall on the date of 2nd August with the presence of more than 20 youths from various backgrounds. This dialogue was chaired by Mr. Sudarshan Ghimire, Director of Sikai Samuha and Education Journalist. Mr. Ghimire stated that the youths have a bigger role to play in ending the discrimination and inequality faced by people to obtain the quality education. Mr. Ghimire also handed over two books to Youth Advocacy Nepal. Youths raised queries to the speaker about the possible solutions to end this form of discrimination and inequality prevalent in the society.

1. National Youth Conference Youth Advocacy Nepal in collaboration with like-minded organizations like National Youth Council, ActionAid Nepal, KIRDARC, UNESCO Kathmandu, SOCH Nepal, Global Peace Foundation and NCE Nepal organized a two days National Youth Conference on Transforming education: Challenges and opportunities on 16-17th August. The results of the conference were as follows:

 An open platform has been created where young people have shared their ideas, knowledge and perspectives on various dimensions of educational system of Nepal.  Around 200 young people have enhanced their understanding on the transforming education, its challenges and opportunities. A comprehensive report consisting of process and findings have been compiled.  The coordination, collaboration and cooperation among the like-minded organizations working in the education sectors in Nepal have been strengthened.

Youth Dialogue on 18 minus campaign & engagement of young people Youth Advocacy Nepal (YAN) organized a Youth Dialogue on "18 Minus Campaign & Engagement of Young People" at the Youth Advocacy Nepal office hall on 12th September with an active participation of 21 youths of diverse background. This dialogue was organized in collaboration with Equal Access International. Ms. Nabodita Subedi from equal access took the whole session and highlighted the issue of 18 minus campaign and why the children below 18 must be protected from any kind of sexual activities. The youths were shown various audio and visual contents during the dialogue to explain the issue. The youths then pledged to say no to any sexual activities with the children's below 18 years of age.

1. Nepal Youth SDG Summit

On the occasion of 4th Anniversary of SDGs, Youth Advocacy Nepal (YAN) in partnership with National Planning Commission, UNESCO Nepal, VSO Nepal, ActionAid Nepal, Nepal SDG Forum and more than 25 like-minded organizations organized a whole day Nepal Youth SDG Summit successfully. During the whole day program, a total of three panel discussions (Lifelong learning, UN Security Council Resolution 2250 and DRR) were held. More than 150 young people from various backgrounds participated in the programs. Participants were able to enhance their knowledge, understanding and perspectives on various subject matters. In addition to it, various critical issues are raised through these dialogues which are needed to address by developing the comprehensive plan of action in the days to come.

1. Selection of Human Rights National Megna Meet 2019 coordinators Youth Advocacy Nepal organized a Coordinator selection program of Human Rights National Magna Meet on September 28th at it office. After the successful coordination of Human Rights National Magna Meet 2019, Youth Advocacy Nepal through a systematic selection process selected three organizations for the conduction of Human Rights National Magna Meet 2020, NGO Federation of Nepal as coordinator and Nepal Grassroot Development Foundation and National Youth Federation Nepal (NYFN) as co-coordinators.

2. Handover of Human Rights National Magna Meet 2020 and Report Launch

The handover program of Human Rights National Magna Meet 2020 was organized in National Human Rights Commission, Nepal hall on 7th of November. The program was held in front of around 100 people representing various organization and civil society. The handover of coordination task of Human Rights National Magna Meet 2020 to NGO Federation of Nepal as coordinator and Nepal Grassroots Development Foundation and National Youth Federation Nepal (NYFN) as co- coordinators was done by Coordinator of Human Rights National Magna Meet 2019 Mr. Narendra Khatiwoda. On the same program Youth Advocacy Nepal also launched the Report of Human Rights National Magna Meet 2019. The launch of the book was done by Hon. Anup Raj Sharma, President of National Human Rights Commission, Nepal.
