of varied landscapes and varied populations, encompassing a rich and diverse history. The land that now comprises the state has witnessed twelve thousand years of human habitation; one of the earliest settlement efforts of the English in North America; the founding of the United States and subsequent battles over the meanings of American freedom; hundreds of years of immigration, industrialization, and urbanization; and the consequences of being located in one of the most populated and most powerful regions of the country. And throughout this history, we find evidence of same-sex love and desire and of gender variance. Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) perspectives have been underrepresented in Maryland’s historical narrative, yet they nevertheless comprise an important part of that larger story. Maryland’s population, according to a U.S. Census Bureau estimate from July 2018, is over 6 million (6,042,718), of which just over half (50.9 percent) is white (non- Latinx); 30.8 percent is African American, 10.1 percent is Latinx, 6.8 percent is Asian American, and 2.8 percent is mixed race.1 In January 2019, the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law reported that 198,000 Marylanders, or 4.2 percent of the state’s population, self-identified as LGBT (the category of Queer was not included in the question). These numbers make Maryland twenty-second on a list of U.S. states and the 1 U.S. Census Bureau, “QuickFacts: Maryland,” July 1, 2018, https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/md. 2 District of Columbia with the highest percentages of LGBTQ residents.2 The institute has also calculated geographic breakdowns of the state’s LGBTQ population, but these are based on older data. According to statistics from 2010, the Maryland counties with the highest percentage of same-sex households were Baltimore County, Prince George’s County, and Montgomery County, respectively.3 Yet, despite its long history and significant LGBTQ population, as of 2019, Maryland had no properties on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) listed for their relevance to LGBTQ history.4 Efforts are afoot to address this oversight, however. In 2018, the Maryland Historical Trust awarded a non-capital historic preservation grant to Preservation Maryland, a statewide private nonprofit organization, to complete a historic context study of LGBTQ history within the state, placing Maryland at the forefront of states documenting their LGBTQ history in this manner. First, I argue that the contemporary religious right, in its anti-gay use of the Bible, is replicating the hermeneutical practices used by opponents of the abolitionist movement. My second thesis parallels the first: I argue that the contemporary activists who reclaim the Bible as a pro-gay instrument are standing in the same hermeneutical tradition as nineteenth-century Christian abolitionists.

    The Life of Anne Braden, Part Two: a Life in the Movement By Lynn Burnett As Anne Braden crisscrossed the nation raising support to free her husband, the love of her life was unbeknownst to her locked away in solitary confinement. Although they wrote to each other often, Carl worried that Anne already had far too many burdens to bear, and therefore didn’t reveal how difficult his circumstances truly were. Carl used his time in solitary to develop an ascetic quality in himself, composing and reflecting on ethical goals. Anne meanwhile cultivated a large, national network of supporters through her travels, writings and journalistic connections. Civil rights activists and labor organizers across the country understood that if the Bradens could be charged with being part of a Communist conspiracy simply for helping a Black family move into a White neighborhood, that they could be charged with subversion for their activities as well. Freeing Carl Braden thus became a major cause: although his bail was the highest in Kentucky’s history, it was raised in seven months. Carl was released in the summer of 1955. Eight months later, the Supreme Court ruled that the state sedition laws that had been used to target the Bradens were unconstitutional. All charges were dropped. The prosecutor of the Bradens, Scott Hamilton, had hoped to rise to fame through building a sensational anti-Communist case. He instead found his career discredited. A few years later, he put a gun to his head and pulled the trigger. Anne and Carl could not, however, simply return to their old lives.

It is Anne’s first-person account of her and her husband Carl’s decision in 1954 to purchase a home in an all-white neighborhood for Andrew and Charlotte Wade, who were black, and of the explosive consequences. Eloquently written; filled with equal parts drama, intriguing characters, and psycho-social analysis; and packed with a sense of journalistic integrity, the book was a finalist for the 1958 National Book Award in Nonfiction. This book discussion kit is based on the edition republished in 1999, which includes a foreword by Julian Bond and a new epilogue by Anne Braden. When The Wall Between was published in 1958, the U.S. was embattled in the African American Civil Rights Movement, a war against white supremacy and for human dignity that forced every citizen of the country to ask him or herself, consciously or subconsciously, “What kind of America do I want to live in?” It is with this question in mind that we hope you approach The Wall Between now, in the 21st century. As of the publication of this book discussion kit, the President of the United States is African American. The days of bus boycotts, restaurant sit-ins, angry mobs throwing stones at black children trying to enroll in all-white schools and black men being prosecuted or mob- lynched for looking at a white woman with intent to rape seem light years past.

    IshDARR brings a crowd Photo by Jun Taek Lee A packed crowd gathered in Gardner on Friday, Nov. 6, to hear from three young hip-hop artists—Young Eddy, Kweku Collins and IshDARR (pictured to the left). IshDARR is based out of Milwaukee, Wis. The sharp-tongued 19- year-old released a critically acclaimed album, “Old Soul, Young Spirit,” earlier this year. He largely pulled material from that album during the performance. The youthful, ecstatic energy of his recorded material transferred seamlessly to the stage. IshDARR was totally engaging for the duration of the set and did not shy away from talking with the audience, eliciting laughter and cheers. It wasn’t a terribly long set, but one that kept the people in attendance rapt from start to finish. Milwaukee is an exciting place to be an MC in 2015. The Midwestern city has recently cultivated a vibrant and dynamic DIY hip hop scene that’s only getting larger. IshDaRR, one of the youngest and most prominent members of the scene, proved on Friday night that he’s got a lot to share with the world. Assuredly, he is only getting started. Friday night was the third time that Young Eddy, aka Greg Margida ’16, has performed on campus and he is sure to have more performances next semester. Kweku Collins hails from Evanston, Ill., and this was his first time performing in Grinnell. The key term is “creative,” along with the equally important “people.” For while Ostertag’s book is on the one hand a collection of essays touching on various aspects of his own biography and artwork, it is also a series of engaging and at times very moving portraits of his contemporaries. Profiling such figures as Anthony Braxton, David Wojnarowicz, Jim Magee, “Maria,” Aleksandra Kostic, and Justin Bond, Creative Life is a story of many creative “lives” that in some way have intersected with the creative life of the protagonist, Ostertag. Some of these lives may be familiar to readers, some not so familiar, and that latter fact is one of the book’s greatest strengths: as an advocate of artists in particular and interesting people in general, Ostertag’s narrative makes the individuals he meets seem intriguing and potentially life-changing, regardless of their level of “fame” in their respective worlds. The information about Texas-based artist Jim Magee, for example, is reason enough to read the book (and if you are unfamiliar with Magee, as I was, take my word for it and read Ostertag’s profile).
