Moren Signs Four In First Recruiting Class At Indiana State Head coach Teri Moren inked four prep standouts on Wednesday to national letters of intents, as Travecia Franklin (Columbus, Ohio / Brookhaven HS), Racheal Mahan (Mansfield, Ohio / Mansfield HS), Marah Morris (Columbus, Ohio / Brookhaven HS) and Jessica Valley (Lafayette, Ind. / Mc- Cutcheon HS) will all be joining the Sycamores as incoming freshmen for the 2011-12 season.

“We’re extremely thrilled about our 2011 class,” said head coach Moren. “We feel that moving forward, they are pieces that we are missing and that they are going to help do some things, especially on the defensive end of the court, that we might not be able to do this season. Most importantly though, they are all great students and great character kids that all come from great families.”

Travecia Franklin – 5-9 – guard – Columbus, Ohio – Brookhaven HS The 5-foot-9 guard was selected to the honorable-mention all-state team last season, after averaging 11.4 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.6 steals per game during her junior year. Franklin, along with fellow 2011 signee Marah Morris, led Brookhaven High School to a 21-3 record during the 2009- 10 campaign, where the Bearcats to a city championship and a spot in the district finals. Franklin excelled at Brookhaven under head coach Reggie Lee, who enters the 2010-11 season with 499 career wins to his record.

“Travecia can play anywhere from the one to the three on the floor, as she is a tremendous athlete,” said head coach Moren. “She’s explosive off the dribble, is long, lankly and will be looked for as one of our primary defensive stoppers. Travecia has a great personality and plays with high energy on the court.”

Racheal Mahan – 6-1 – forward – Mansfield, Ohio – Mansfield HS Following the 2009-10 season, the 6-foot-1 southpaw was selected as special mention All-Ohio, conference player of the year and as the News Journal Player of the Year after averaging 21.5 points, 15.5 rebounds, 2.3 steals, while shooting 58 percent from the field under Mansfield head coach Todd Krill.

“At 6-foot-1, Racheal already looks like a collegiate player,” said head coach Moren. “She’s a tremendous athlete, as she also runs track & field and plays at Mansfield. Racheal has tremendous touch and has a nose for the ball on the offensive end of the floor. We’re hoping that she can be another big on the inside that will see minutes at either the four or five.”

Marah Morris – 5-10 – forward – Columbus, Ohio – Brookhaven HS Morris averaged 10.4 points, 7.8 rebounds and nearly two steals per game at Brookhaven High School last season, recording five double-doubles during the year. Morris, along with fellow 2011 signee Travecia Franklin, led Brookhaven High School to a 21-3 record during the 2009-10 cam- paign, where the Bearcats to a city championship and a spot in the district finals. Morris excelled at Brookhaven under head coach Reggie Lee, who enters the 2010-11 season with 499 career wins to his record.

“Marah has a work ethic and other intangibles that not everyone has,” said head coach Moren. “She is a tremendous athlete that can play inside at the four-spot and is a beast on the offensive and defensive boards. We’re hoping that Marah can help replace Kelsie Cooley next season, as she brings the same kind of toughness that Cooley has.”

Jessica Valley – 5-7 – guard – Lafayette, Ind. – McCutcheon HS Averaged 16.1 points as a junior at McCutcheon High School under head coach Jeff Knoy, en route to leading the Mavericks to a sectional title. Valley enters her senior season with 785 career points and just under 200 career steals. HoosierScout.net lists Valley as one of the Top 12 recruits coming out of the state of Indiana for the 2011 class.

“Jessica is a prototype Indiana guard,” said head coach Moren. “She can shoot and put in on the floor, but I’ve been most impressed by her passing and ability to find the open person. Jessica is similar to Anna Munn, with a good basketball IQ and a good feel for the game. She’s a great all-around player and will be a welcomed addition on the perimeter next season.” Indiana State Women’s Basketball 2010 Player Bios BRITTANY SCHOEN
