Chia, considered one of the top recruiters in the Great Lakes Val- ley Conference, was an assistant coach for the Norse for seven years before being named head coach in 2001. During Chia’s nine years as head coach, NKU players have earned All-America honors 11 times. Liz Holmes, the current Norse assistant coach, was a three-time All-American under Chia. Last year, Chia guided NKU to a 20-12 record and collected his 200th career victory as Norse head coach. It marked the 17th consecutive season that NKU reached the 20-win plateau. NKU posted a 28-8 record two years ago and won a share of the GLVC East Division championship. The Norse also advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament. The previous year, Chia guided NKU to a 26-9 record and a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament. In 2005, Chia led NKU to a 26-7 overall record. Chia also recorded his 100th career coaching victory on Aug. 27, 2005, as his Norse defeated Puerto Rico-Bayamon, 30-25, 21-30, 30-27, 30-27, at San Juan, Puerto Rico. Chia guided NKU to a 22-9 overall record in 2004, and the Norse finished with a 13-3 mark in the GLVC. Chia was also named GLVC Coach of the Year for the second time in his career. NKU advanced to the semifinals of the GLVC Tournament before losing to Southern Illinois at Edwardsville. Chia led NKU to a 26-12 overall record in 2003, and his Norse advanced to the championship match of the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region Tournament. NKU - which won the GLVC regular-season title - featured AVCA first team All-American Kristin Koralewski, who was also named the GLVC Player of the Year in both 2003 and 2004. In 2002, Chia guided NKU to a 22-10 record and a second-place finish at the GLVC Tournament. Among the highlights that year was Norse setter Sara Taylor, who finished No. 1 nationally in assists in NCAA Divi- sion II with an average of 13.82 assists per game. She became the first NKU player to ever lead the nation in that category. In 2001, Chia led NKU to a 28-5 record, and the Norse also captured their fifth consecutive GLVC cham- pionship. NKU, which featured 2001 GLVC Player of the Year Bethany Gastright, also advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament for the fifth straight season. Chia earned GLVC Coach of the Year honors in 2001, and his team finished with a No. 17 ranking in the AVCA NCAA Division II poll. NKU also posted an unbeaten season (14-0) in the GLVC in 2001. Chia is now 218-85 in nine seasons as head coach at NKU. Since joining the NKU coaching staff in 1994, Chia has been a part of seven GLVC championship teams. In 1998, the Norse won the Great Lakes Region title and advanced to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight for the first time in school history. In 1999, the Norse advanced to the NCAA Division II Final Four and ended with a national ranking of No. 2 - the highest rating in the program’s history. Prior to coming to NKU, Chia served as a volleyball coach at Mount Notre Dame High School in Cincin- nati and helped the team capture the 1991 district championship in southwest Ohio. 4 2010 NKU Volleyball Guide Liz Holmes Assistant Coach Liz Holmes begins her third season as the assistant coach at Northern Kentucky University. Holmes completed her playing career at NKU in 2007 by becoming the only three-time All-American in Norse volleyball history. A 2004 graduate of Mother of Mercy High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, Holmes started all four years at NKU. She was named Great Lakes Valley Conference Freshman of the Year in 2004 and earned honorable mention All-America accolades from the AVCA as a sopho- more and junior. As a senior, Holmes was named GLVC Player of the Year, Great Lakes Region Player of the Year and the GLVC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for volleyball. Holmes also led NKU to a 26-9 record and helped the Norse secure a berth in the NCAA Division II Tour- nament. She later was named to both the AVCA and Daktronics All-America first teams. Hol- mes finished her career as NKU’s all-time leader in kills with 1,850, and she led the GLVC in hitting percentage her final three years. In addition, Holmes finished seventh all-time in NKU history with 1,191 career digs and second in block assists with 291. After earning the Margery Rouse Athlete of Distinction Award from the NKU athletic council, Holmes was later named the GLVC’s 2007-08 Woman of the Year. She also earned an NCAA postgraduate scholarship and was a four-time member of the GLVC All-Academ- ic squad. 2010 NKU Volleyball Guide 5 2010 Northern Kentucky University roster No. Name Pos. Cl.
