    Hungarian Historical Review 5, no. 4 (2016): 739–766 1956 and the Collapse of Stalinist Politics of History: Forgetting and Remembering the 1942 Újvidék/Novi Sad Massacre and the 1944/45 Partisan Retaliations in Hungary and Yugoslavia (1950s–1960s)* Árpád von Klimó The Catholic University of America, Washington, DC Two acts of mass violence that occurred during World War II have strained relations between Hungarians and Serbs for decades: the murder of several thousand civilians in Novi Sad (Újvidék) and the surrounding villages in January 1942, committed by the Hungarian army and gendarmerie, and Tito’s partisan army’s mass killings and incarceration of tens of thousands civilians, most of them Hungarians, at the end of the war. Remembering these atrocities has always been difficult and strongly politicized, but this was particularly the case when the Communist regimes in Hungary and Yugoslavia based the legitimation of their authority on anti-Fascist narratives and interpretations of the war. The conflict between Stalin and Tito, and the anti-Stalinist revolution of 1956 made it even more difficult to propagate the original Stalinist narrative about the war, which stood in ever starker contrast to everyday realities. When Kádár began to revise the political justification of his regime with a narrative that was both anti- Fascist and (moderately) critical of Stalinism in the 1960s, the remembrance of the 1942 massacre changed.     Ignoramus et ignorabimus: German sociologist Peter Ullrich will never know if left-wing antisemitism really exists The Times of Israel, October 16, 2013 The Center for Research on Antisemitism (ZfA) at Technical University in Berlin has generated a long list of controversies in recent years, take the views of its former head Wolfgang Benz for example. In 2011 he was followed by historian Stefanie Schueler-Springorum, a newcomer in the field of research on antisemitism. On November 8–9, 2013, Schueler-Springorum, the Jewish Museum Berlin, and the foundation Remembrance, Responsibility, and Future (EVZ) will hold an international conference dedicated to antisemitism in Europe today. Among many very troubling speakers at this event, one new German voice will be heard: Peter Ullrich. Ullrich, born 1976, is a sociologist, and recently employed as a co-worker in a project of the Center for Research on Antisemitism (ZfA). In October 2013, he published a book (in German) by well-known publishing house Wallstein dedicated to the analysis of left-wing antisemitism, Germans, Israel, Palestine, and remembrance of the Holocaust. In his book, Peter Ullrich attacks political scientist Samuel Salzborn (born 1977), who is a professor at Goettingen University, and historian Sebastian Voigt, for their criticism of left-wing antisemitism. In 2011, Salzborn and Voigt published an article about troubling tendencies in the party of the Left in Germany, Die Linke. For example, two Members of Parliament and one former Member of Parliament, Inge Höger, Annette Groth, and Norman Paech, respectively, were on the Mavi Marmara in May 2010. This terror vessel was part of the so-called Gaza Flotilla, dedicated to ending the blockade of the Hamas-ruled Gaza strip and to destabilizing Israel.

Following a series of highly visible attacks in Paris, committed by the Communist, ‘immigrant’ Resistance group of Missak Manouchian,2 the Brigades spéciales (special Brigades) of the French police finally pounce on the perpetrators, and arrest follows arrest. At the end of a very brief trial a few months later, twenty-three members of the combat unit, including Manouchian himself, are condemned to death. The twenty-two men are immediately shot at Mont Valérien, on 21 February 1944 (the one woman, Olga Bancic, is executed separately, beheaded in Stuttgart on 10 May). More or less simultaneously, the photos of ten of these freedom fighters are displayed on the infamous Affiches rouges (red posters), which are plastered over the walls of French towns and cities, and which denounce ‘l’Armée du crime’ (the Army of crime), most obviously composed of people with names of foreign, if not Jewish, origin. Shortly afterwards, the Liberation of France, for which these combatants willingly gave their lives, commenced. That is by no means the end of their story, however. Throughout the post-war period, the group regularly comes back into the headlines, forming, as Margaret Atack has noted, ‘an important focal point for remembrance and controversy’ (2013: 175).3 For example, in 1955, in honour of the group, and to mark the inauguration of a rue du Groupe Manouchian in Paris, Louis Aragon writes the poem which will first appear in L’Humanité on 5 March 1955, entitled ‘Groupe Manouchain’, and then in his collection, Le Roman inachevé, as ‘Strophes pour se souvenir’ (1956: 225-26).

While Laurent Douzou’s book, La Résistance française: Une histoire périlleuse, reaffirms this heroic vision, Pascal Convert’s sculpture honoring executed Resistance fighters on Mont Valérien and his documentary film Mont Valérien, aux noms des fusillés propose a more human, even anti-heroic approach which nevertheless aims to unite a community in memory by celebrating the courage and sacrifice, but also the specific persons, of previously forgotten résistants.

Januar 2015 jährt sich der Tag der Befreiung so vieler Menschen aus dem Konzentrationslager Auschwitz zum siebzigsten Mal. In den folgenden Monaten 1945 wurden die Überlebenden auch aus den anderen Konzentrationslagern befreit. Sechs Millionen Juden waren ermordet worden. Welche das große Glück hatten, wieder frei zu kommen, wussten zwar, dass sie überlebt haben, jedoch wussten sie nicht, was sie nun erwartete. Fanden sie vielleicht noch die Partnerin oder den Partner, waren da vielleicht noch Geschwister oder andere Verwandte, gab es noch vereinzelt einen guten alten Freund oder einen der damals in der NS-Zeit seltenen guten Kollegen oder der ganz wenigen ehemaligen hilfreichen Nachbarn? Diese bangen Fragen wurden nicht immer schnell beantwortet. Oft vergingen Monate oder Jahre, oft fanden die Menschen, die das unvorstellbare Leid in den Konzentrationslagern überlebt hatten, kaum jemanden, der ihnen nahe stand. Wo war wer geblieben? Glückliches Wiedersehen Anfang der 1950er Jahre ging ich in Düsseldorf mit meiner Mutter durch den Kaufhof. Vor der Uhren-Abteilung blieb meine Mutter plötzlich stehen, fasste mich am Arm und sagte: „Da steht ein älterer Herr. Ich glaube, den kenne ich von früher. Vielleicht ist das Herr Dalibor !“ „Wer ist Herr Dalibor ?“, fragte ich meine Mutter. „Herr Dalibor ist ein früherer Mitarbeiter im Uhrengeschäft, in dem ich bis 1938 gearbeitet habe. Ich habe ihn damals das letzte Mal gesehen ! Wenn es wirklich Herr Dalibor ist, würde ich mich sehr freuen ! Er ist Jude ! Ein sehr freundlicher Herr ! Ich muss unbedingt wissen, ob er es ist !“ Dann ging meine Mutter auf eine Verkäuferin in der Abteilung zu und fragte sie: „Der ältere Herr in Ihrer Abteilung: Ist das vielleicht Herr Dalibor ?“ Die Verkäuferin nickte überrascht.

    ABSTRACT DEUIL D’UNE (IN)CONNUE By Jennifer Ann Young Contemporary French author Patrick Modiano’s novels center almost entirely around memory and the traumatic events surrounding the Occupation. Modiano has spent most of his life dealing with the guilty remorse of having been born directly following the Occupation, while hundreds of thousands of others, including his estranged father, experienced it directly. Modiano’s Dora Bruder focuses on the chance encounter with a stranger and the possibility of caring deeply for this person. The heroine, Dora Bruder, mesmerizes Modiano as he devotes six years of his life to finding out the fate of this young girl, who disappeared during the Occupation. Her fate becomes his mission. This thesis explores the possibilities of loving someone without ever having met him or her. It also further discovers the (im)possibility of mourning the loss of an unknown individual.
