In September, the Pilgrims, seeking religious freedom, departed Britain for the New World. September is the beginning of meteorological autumn & as we have seen this year, the peak of hurricane season is in early September. September is back to school month, the kick-off of football season at all levels & the thrill of tight baseball pennant races! See You in September: This 1966 #3 Billboard hit for The Happenings was written by Sid Wayne & Sherman Edwards. They were part of a songwriting group that was located in the Brill Building in Tin Pan Alley. The group included no less than Hal David, Burt Bacharach, Bobby Darin, Neil Sedaka, Neil Diamond, Gerry Goffin & Carole King. Mr. Wayne wrote many of the songs that were featured in Elvis Presley’s movies, partnering with other songwriters like Mr. Edwards, Ben Weisman & Abner Silver. Mr. Edwards wrote some early songs for Mr. Presley, but as the legend has it, walked out of songwriting session because of the demands of Mr. Presley’s manager, Colonel Tom Parker. Saying he was tired of Rock’n’Roll, Mr. Edwards did not know what he would do next! But on March 16, 1969 a play, with songs written by Mr. -

Music by Richard Rodgers; Lyrics by StePhen Sondheim Book by Arthur Laurents Based on the play The Time of the Cuckoo by Arthur Laurents Season Begins February 10, 2016 New York, NY, May 11, 2015– The 2016 season of New York City Center’s Tony-honored Encores! series will open with Cabin in the Sky on February 10–14, 2016, followed by 1776 and Do I Hear a Waltz?. Jack Viertel is the artistic director of Encores!; Rob Berman is its music director. Cabin in the Sky tells the fable-like story of a battle between The Lord’s General and the Devil’s only son over the soul of a charming ne’er-do-well named “Little Joe” Jackson who, after a knife fight in a saloon, is given six months more on earth to prove his worth. With Cabin in the Sky, composer Vernon Duke, lyricist John La Touche, and librettist Lynn Root set out to celebrate African American achievement in music and dance, and created a wonderfully integrated score that blends hits like “Taking a Chance on Love” with authentic traditional gospel numbers and full-fledged modern dance pieces. The show opened on October 25, 1940 at the Martin Beck Theatre in a production staged and choreographed by George Balanchine and ran 156 performances. -

The Festival is one of the highlights of the NAMT year, bringing together 600+ industry professionals for two days of intense focus on new musical theatre works and the remarkably talented writing teams who create them. This year we are particularly excited not only about the quality, but also about the diversity—in theme, style, period, place and people—represented across the eight shows that were selected from over 150 submissions. We’re visiting 17th-century England and early 20th century New York. We’re spending some time in the world of fairy tales—but not in ways you ever have before. We’re visiting Indiana and Georgia and the world of reality TV. Regardless of setting or stage of development, every one of these shows brings something new—something thought-provoking, funny, poignant or uplifting—to the musical theatre field. This Festival is about helping these shows and writers find their futures. Beyond the Festival, NAMT is active year-round in supporting members in their efforts to develop new works. This year’s Songwriters Showcase features excerpts from just a few of the many shows under development (many with collaboration across multiple members!) to salute the amazing, extraordinarily dedicated, innovative work our members do. GUNSMOKE TV CAST AND DETAILS Premiered: September 10, 1955, on CBS Rating: TV-PG Premise: This landmark adult Western centered on Marshal Matt Dillon of Dodge City. John Wayne turned down the lead, suggesting James Arness (who remained for its entire run). Originating on radio (with William Conrad as Dillon), it moved to TV in September 1955. Its popularity spawned a number of copycats, but none would enjoy the longevity (and few the consistent quality) of this classic. Airing for 20 years, it's TV's longest running prime-time drama (a record that `Law & Order' is currently chasing). Z4- Abstract A musical theatre recital is an unusual and creative project to undertake. While the majority of recitals are composed of classical works, a theatrical recital includes songs from the realm of musical theatre, and must include acting as well as the songs. It therefore develops a singer's vocal and physical performance. "If I Sing, " A Musical Theatre Recital was developed to expand and showcase my talents as a musical theatre major and performer. I chose songs that represented a variety of shows from the history of musical theatre, ranging from 1937 to the present. My goal was to educate those people who were not familiar with many musicals by helping them expand their knowledge of musicals. I did this by giving the audience members a tour of musical theatre history through the songs. Personally, my songs were choices that helped me expand my repertoire. While a few songs were ones that I have become accustomed to performing for years, most were songs that I have wanted to perform for a long while, but have never had the opportunity or reason. All the songs were personal favorites of mine, but were also songs that stretched me to my vocal limits. Several songs challenged me vocally, while others challenged my acting ability. Also, the recital was a challenge to sing. -
